[Spoiler]just saw a preview screening in australia 16/01/08
and have some stuff to vent

ok so i just got back from a preview screening of the movie and there are certain things i would just like to vent. first thing that isnt a spoiler at all is....the monster is fucking cool. credit to the design team.

anyways the rest may contain spoilers.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
ok so basically. anyone who has been following the ARG from around july will be fairly pissed off with this film and its lack of mention of some key elements of the arg.

Jamie - in it for 1 second passed out on a couch at the party with no sign or mention of teddy.

Tagruato - not mentioned at all except for the big logo on the crashed tanker.

beth - the stunt double pic that everyone though was jamie being impaled....its beth.

The Monster - No mention of where the hell it came from. basically hud throughout the movie speculates, but he says everything we have already speculated about (deep sea, alien, government created) so stupid now i have no closure.

I WAS FUCKING RIGHT ABOUT THE LITTLE MONSTERS YOU FOOLS. (and they fucking rock. think 'pitch black' style)

IT IS NOT A LION BUT IT IS FUCKING MASSIVE (40stories...ish) and it crawls around alot. you barely get a clear shot of the monster until the last 10 mintues ya see its face in full view.....scary stuff. the closest thing i could think it resembes, if someone has played street fighter 3 or something and the character twelve that crawls around....kinda like that.

HUD gets pwned. but not in the subway.

when the movie ended, the entire packed cinema were like.....ur kidding it ends there? basically....omg shittiest ending ever. they let you to beleive a nuke went off (ya dont see it or anything) and it ends as rob + beth get crushed under the bridge.......thats it then credits roll. nuke ---> 2seconds --> credits. the audience seemed to think it was like someone had given them a really nice lamb roast....without any mint sauce....

anyways thats my synopsis, i really enjoyed the flick. see above for more.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Any other ending besides the camera being buried along with Rob and Beth would be cliche and cheesy. Not every story has to end with the hero getting the girl and riding off into the sunset. Sometimes, no matter how well intentioned your actions were, it just doesn't work out.

Now that I'm done spoiling, let me say that it totally irks me that today's audience can't deal with non-traditional storytelling. Everything has to follow formula, right down to the predictable endings.

Which brings me to another spoiler, this time for I Am Legend. The ending in the movie is vastly different from the book, and that riled me bad.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The original book does NOT end on anything remotely resembling a happy note. The hero finds out that many of the daysleepers he killed were actually normal at night. He is "Legend" because he is the evil that kills them while they sleep, and he commits suicide before the still living can execute him. He doesn't die a martyr with a miracle cure delivered. He dies as a legendary horrific monster.

So I give kudos to any writer with the cahones to break formula.

The reason for the ending you described is simple. This movie is made using a hand held camera so that everything you see is what the main characters are seeing.

So....

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It only makes sense that the ending would seem like it sucked/be a cliffhanger because the main characters aren't going to keep filming once they are dead. So as soon as they die, its the end of the film. If they had shown the mushroom cloud from a nuke or anything like that it would have completely broken the whole point of view thing and it would be worse in my eyes. It is very similar to the Blair Witch Project in this aspect. At the end there is no one left to film, thus you don't have a very satisfying ending

my problem with the ending
which basically speaks to being able to view the whole movie

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If the idea of the Hammer Down mission at the end of the movie eludes to them going nuclear on the area, the monster, was right on top of them and where the bomb was dropped. How the HELL did that video get recovered, let alone be viewable. If it werent melted by the blast it surely would not have had any data remaining on it. Even a large scale non nuke would have destroyed it.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
While it's true that any magnetic data exposed to an EMP will be destroyed, it's also possible that the tape was protected by steel beams in the collapsed bridge (or wherever the tape was found; I haven't seen it), or any other metal debris around the tape, which acted like a Faraday cage and protected the tape from being destroyed.

Edit: wrong tags, sorry.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There is absolutely no mention of the using any type of nuclear device. The military has conventional ordinance that can level a city without using nuclear weapons. For example, see Dresden, Germany.

I wish people would stop implying that nuclear weapons were used. They weren't!

For those that have seen the film:

Does this movie's length make you feel like you've seen something a bit longer than the actual running time of 73 minutes??? (WTF, before it was 90, went to 85, now it's 73...shit) or does it feel like you've just watched a 1hr episode of a TV show?

B.S.
IF that were the case we wouldn't be seeing the "Case designate Cloverfield" blah blah at the intro.

Could have ended with:

cut to a hospital room with some military guys asking rob is that was his camera and if he remembered the images he saw (happy ending)

cut to a congressional hearing with insert the blank on trial and this submitted as exhibit 'a' (enigmatic but not sad ending)

cut to a bunch of military/science guys looking at a computer screen (as if they had just reviewed the footage) and saying things like "too bad they didn't make it", "they died in each other's arms", "I'm not sure how we're going to take down that thing if Hammerdown didn't work", etc. (enigmatic and IMO best ending)

You forgot the ending where Thelma pulls the mask off of the Monster and its Old Man Dithers from the haunted amusement park.

He would of gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those darn kids and their Cloverfield.

or..

It could have also ended by telling us that the main characters could see dead people and MGP had been dead ALL THAT TIME!

Actually, it's "Velma." (Did anyone else watch Scooby-Doo just because you were hoping the monster would be real this time?)
