[SPOILERS] My thoery about the monster (based on the .gif)
Could his cheeks be more than just pretty?

Hey guys this is my first post here, thought I'd share this little thought with all of you. Okay well i've seen the gif and I'm sure a few of you have, if you haven't then here:

This is a real picture of the monster, not fan art

Now then, even though I haven't seen the movie, I've noticed this takes place in the morning, and if I'm correct, wasn't the monster attacked by the military during the night before this whole scene happened. If this is true, maybe, just maybe, that monster puffs it's orange/red cheeks and opens the top of it's head when it gets angry? Because it just got attacked with a bunch of missiles before that so I'm sure any giant monster would be pissed right? This is just a theory, feedback would be appreciated.

There are alot of animals that make themselves look more threatening in stressful situations. some fluff up their fur to look bigger,Octopus change colors, ect. But usually it is a trait developed to ward of larger predators. I would imagine MGP is on top of the food chain...but still makes sense to me!

Exactly! It's kind of like (okay this is going to be a bad comparison but...) If any of you have played any of the Monster Hunter games then it's like how the wyverns or dragons or crabs go into a "rage mode" where they look slightly different (like a monoblos getting red stripes on top of it's head) and deal more damage. I know it's a very lame description but still. It's just a theory, we'll find out one day! .....Atleast I hope.

So, I haven't seen the movie, because it is first due later in Europe, so I might not know what I'm talking about...

But perhaps the lung things aren't lungs, but sensory organ? The creature comes from the deep sea, where light isn't exactly common, and thus has developed another way of 'seeing'.
That makes sense in my book, in any case.

Given the regularity of their expansion, at least during that last scene with HUD, I think that they are gills. Remember, if this thing was at the bottom of the ocean, it's not going to be used to the pressure up top. Impressive that it didn't just liquefy on the surface, no matter how grumpy it was. So we could be seeing signs of its stress with the outward lungs/gills whatever. This isn't exactly what I'm thinking, but it's close:
