This group meets on the second Monday of each month to discuss a specific mystery, horror, or intrigue novel. This month's selection is Unshapely Things by Mark Del Franco. In the alleys of the decrepit Boston neighborhood known as the Weird, fairy prostitutes are turning up dead. The crime scenes show signs of residual magic, but the Guild, which polices the fey, has more "important" crimes to investigate and dumps the case on human law enforcement. Boston police call in Connor Grey, a druid and former hotshot Guild investigator-whose magical abilities were crippled after a run-in with a radical environmentalist elf. As Connor battles red tape and his own shortcomings, he realizes that the murders are not random, but part of an ancient magical ritual. And if Connor can't figure out the killer's M.O., the culmination of the spell might just bring about a worldwide cataclysm. For additional information click

Which seems to point us right back to Autumn Country.

Ignore the dates on these. All three of them were added today. I don't know if his blog is related to this game or not but it mentions us so I'm passing it on.

The beauty of the thing

Sometimes the beauty of the thing is only apparent in the word that isn't written. Or the line that isn't drawn.

Or the achingly adolescent thought that isn't thunk.

Oh brother.

Dead or Alive

Dead or Alive had it right; been a long time.

And it has been a long time since something new came along. Maybe as long ago as when I first ran into stock photography. I'm not sure it's supposed to work this way, but it seems that as I get older it gets harder to find new stuff that is truly interesting. The old stuff has stayed fun - don't get me wrong - but I like to have a glimpse of the 'next' thing. Or maybe the 'other' thing would be a better way to put that.

All things considered, I suppose this new thing is not so different from the first thing. Same store, different department (or some better metaphor). Been trading notes with several folks who are involved in something that has the appearance of strangeness. Funny thing is that I 'met' a couple of them before, when I was working on the OVERWATCH project with Djinn. Very bright people, ARG folks; but it looks like they have gotten involved in something in the real world (or at least the part of it where things get a little blurry). They were helping with that Whitechapel project that I've been running errands for, but I get the impression that a part of that spilled over into something else. Funny how that always happens.

Apparently someone got video of what looks like an incapacitated someone getting thrown into an SUV and driven away. Saw that and was struck by the strangest sense of deja vu. Wink It looked like normal backup to me, but the situation was strange. Hoodoo stuff. The guy keeled over for no apparent reason other than acting like a fool in the middle of some residential street. I'd be very surprised if it isn't all the usual gothic fun - but still, you can't let the little pricks generation gap ya.

I'm half hoping a physical lead turns up. Maybe I'll have a chance to finally wear that trench coat.

I really wish we could find Slider.

Jade hasn't had that much time yet to check out the sites. At least he doesn't seem to approach this with that much urgency.

More from Ethan!

The only thing I know about RN is that I have no idea what they are all about. This spearmint sounds like an angry nut. They appear to be secretive, but at the same time they don't appear to have a clue about some of the stuff they are doing. And now there is this reference to, as you say, a bunch of geeks. I don't get it either. The only common theme I can see is that they talk a lot about stuff that you would normally associate with critical thinking, yet they seem extremely interested in things that touch upon the paranormal. Reminds me of some of the "fringier" types I knew in school.

Hey, are you aware of anything potentially dangerous going on with OC:0702? I had heard that there was some kind of lead that you all had, and then earlier today I got a letter from Luke that seemed the hint pretty strongly that something was going on - and it sounded like it was "troubling", for lack of a better word. Should I be concerned? Has something happened that is directly related to this case? Don't mean to put you on the spot or anything, but I haven't heard back from the earlier note.

Oh dear... Shocked I'm starting to think maybe we should just tell him. Maybe a shakeup is just what we need. I dunno.

I agree, what else is there to do? BE isn't giving us anything. I can't figure out the source for where Smoke Lady gets her color of the day secret password. So, if we tell Ethan what all has happened maybe he can help us with that.

So, go for it Petunia. I'm sure you can make him understand that we thought it was in his best interest that we didn't tell him because of what BE said here:

Can you tell me why Ethan can't know about this?

//Would have thought it was obvious.

//Don't know what happened yet.

//Two possibilities, maybe more.

//They were with him and attempting to help.

//Or they abducted him.

//If the latter, who were they? Why?

//If the latter, they may be interested in others who were involved.

//For now, Ethan is only peripherally involved.

//What he doesn't know is less likely to hurt him.

Wow, when I looked that up found that BE finally answered Mort's questions;

Well. Then color me perplexed.

What questions should we be asking? So we can spend less time on red herrings: what questions are off limits, and is that temporary or permanent?

//Don't have any more information.

//If I learn anything useful I'll share it.

How did it become acceptable for us to become more involved than Ethan? Are we somehow safer despite being privy to more details than he?

//More likely to learn something useful.

//Probably.

Know anyone who self-indentifies as spearmint? Or any groups that would call themselves objectivists (and not in reference to Ayn Rand)?

//No.

What other experience do you have with strange phenomena? Do the rituals fit into a larger pattern?

//Unknown.

Does your group tend to believe more in rational explanations or in supernatural explanations? Ever found a real conspiracy?

//na

Sorry, just not used to such anonymous…altruism.

Have you contacted petra_c81SPLATyahoo.com? Do you intend to? Would you prefer we do that?

//No.

//Undecided.

//If you have a way to do so safely.

What are your thoughts on "Petra's" (real name appears to be Kelly and she might live in Boca Raton) role in this?

//Not enough data to have any thoughts on this.

Obviously BE is not checking his/her email, since I have sent all the details we've gotten about Petra and from Petra.

I told Ethan, so it's out there. I left out the name "capnomantrix" just in case there really is a reason to worry about him getting in over his head, but I told him about Petra and the color code.

I still think Ramback wasn't abducted. It makes sense to do a ritual like that with backup and a getaway car, and they were on the scene immediately, which implies that they were waiting just around the corner. I mean, if something went wrong, you would want help nearby, and either way you wouldn't want undue scrutiny like the police.

I doubt he's dead, although it's possible; I also doubt that he's going to be online any time soon, although that's possible too. He's probably convalescing in someone's basement while his associates try and figure out what to do next.

I'm glad you told him Typoxic. Maybe he will become more involved or maybe Whitechapel will drop out. Either way we still have a game.

Mort we have missed a lot, Ethan keeps telling us how and what to search for. We aren't doing the research they want us to do it seems.

If Capno shows up again maybe we should just say Hi or Ramback sent us or ask if she can answer a question for us. I really don't know.

If I'm right, she'll probably know Ramback didn't send us. It might be worth a shot, though.

I wouldn't risk it. Doesn't pay to lie to an oracle. But we don't have to say Ramback sent us, we can just say we're looking for him or worried about him or something.

So you told him about BE? He can see the video now?

Anybody have Skype besides Sylvia & Mort?

We may be missing an "intro" conversation between Philly & Capno, or how they met. Could be as simple as dashcat said, we should just say hi. Or maybe there was, dare I say, an initiation of some sort.

We need a UK contact.

Yeah, he can see the video. I linked him to BE's blog and gave him the pass. I'm a little worried he'll tell BE off or something, but then again, what if he does? Oh, well.

Saying we're looking for Ramback might be the best way to introduce ourselves. It's true, and it might get us a hint of some kind. I can't get Skype to work at all (it sticks on "create account" and won't connect). Maybe I wasn't ~meant~ to interact with Cap.

Oddly enough I opened a Skype account last Saturday. Capnomantrix has added me as a contact, P.M. Ramback has not.

There must be some way for people to get the daily or weekly password to use with Capno. There must be some kind of organisation involved here and I hope they have a website we can find.

I agree, I tried last night, but I must not have been using the right combination of google terms. Because I come up with nothing. It just makes me think how the secret organizations use to get their secret passwords. Didn't they use stuff like the newspapers or something?

Petra said this:
Quote:
Everything I know about Philly isn't much. Met him at a bar one night. He was all serious and quiet. We started going around together. Nice enough guy at first, right, but after a while he starts getting moody sometimes. Doesn't drink or use, but smokes like a chimney. Always meeting people. Always being cool. He didn't have a job as far as I could tell so I figured he was either a trust fund kid or he was selling stuff I didn't ask about. And he was into magic. He was always reading books or looking at strange stuff on his computer. I'm not into it, so he didn't get into it much with me.

I think in there somewhere is the hint to finding where Philly got the secret code of the day/week. May have to email Petra again. And I wish we could get more on Slider.

What if he left his computer behind when he left? Maybe there's a nifty little file on it.

Do you have any examples? The only thing I remember him asking for lately was for us to further investigate the djinn/demon comparison. He hasn't said word 1 about MSG3 or MSG4 in a couple weeks. And he hasn't given us a status update on checking our list against the WF database.

Heck, he hasn't updated the Open Cases page since just after New Year's. The correspondence archives haven't been updated in a week.

 reply from Ethan
from his Whitechapel address, rather pointedly I thought

Well, SHIT. Bang Head

(bold is mine, and I know I got a little tag-happy, but I just can't believe this shite)

Ethan wrote:
Thank you for the additional information, and thank you for your concern. Even though it seems there is no need to be concerned, I am still very appreciative.

Sorry for not replying yesterday, but obviously I had to inform the Foundation after seeing that video and there have been many meetings and a great deal of discussion since then. For the record, it is obvious to all of us that whoever picked up the person in the video was with him and was simply helping him after he passed-out for some unknown reason.

I should let you know that the Foundation felt it was prudent to advise local law enforcement in St. Petersburg that they had become aware of this video, just in case there are any further issues. Apparently, the police reviewed the Brighton Early site also because we heard back from them late in the day yesterday. They said there wasn't much they could do, since it did not appear that a crime had been committed (other than the likelihood that whoever shot the video was probably trespassing on someone's property). They had some questions about whether we thought there were any "homeland security" concerns (I think all the secrecy and double-talk at the Brighton Early site made them nervous), but after a very long conversation with Mr. Kennedy in which he explained the nature of the work we do they seemed to drop that angle. They said that unless someone reports a crime or a missing person, it's not a law enforcement issue.

The Foundation is obviously happy about that, and we are sure that - based on the timing - whatever happened in St. Pete has nothing to do with the Foundation. We feel that any similarity to what Sandra reported seeing in St. Pete - and whatever else may be going on down there - must be the result of a different source document, NOT the one that was found in the Scarpelli library.

The Foundation is still interested in the origin of the Scarpelli document, but we have no interest in the events that have occurred in St. Pete. The Foundation has made it clear that I (along with any other Foundation employee or asset) am to have absolutely nothing to do with any investigation into the events in St. Pete.

Thank you for your continued interest in the Open Cases project.

Thing is, we DO have a missing person. But it's not like we can actually file a missing persons report on one Phillip Markovich. Cursing

Jade is not a "Foundation employee or asset," right? So he can still help us?

I signed up for the SFSNNJ Yahoo group this morning, before I got Ethan's email. Figured what the hell. They post a lot, but this is all I got about the Nov. 12 mall meetup. *shrug*
