[SPOILER] Camcorder confusion

At the beginning, we were told that the film was recovered from an SD card. Yet, why does the film look like it was recorded on a tape (with taped over parts). As far as I know, the camera they use is Panasonic HDC-SD1 without tape slot, and (I guess) you can't record over existing footage. This is clear especially when Hud replays the clip to the people after Statue of Liberty head incident showing Coney Island footage.

Hmmm...

It was never mentioned it was recovered from an SD card. Sorry if I'm wrong but I saw it twice.

Yes, it does mention SD in the text at the very beginning of the film.

I had a problem with this going back to an early review/synopsis/whatever when they mentioned the film having flashbacks, which completely went against the director stating that it was meant to feel like found footage and the only edits were when the camera was turned off and on. I guess they felt that most people wouldn't catch on. I'll just chalk it up to more suspension of disbelief.

I don't recall it stating what format the media was that they found, but I'll keep my eye out on my second viewing tomorrow.

As for the issues with camera models, there were 3 used in the filming, and 2 are seen in the hands of Hud in the publicity shots. The one he is meant to be using is the smallest and most amateur one you see him holding, and as I recall does use DV tapes. They did actually use that model as well as the other two, I believe all taking to the same format and resolution. Someone had posted some info about which cameras were used and seen, I thought it was MrToasty.

Yes, we did have a brief discussion or two about the different cameras. The one Hud is supposed to be using throughout the movie is the same one being given away as a prize in one of the contests, the Panasonic HDC-SD1. This only records to SD/SDHC.

At the very beginning during the run-down of where the footage came from, there was a typed line that said "Digital SD Card," I think.

Yes, something very close to that if not that exactly.

It is a bit confusing I agree.

The text at the beginning of the movie clearly states that the information was taken from a SD card, but Rob clearly asks Hud if he changed out the TAPE before using the recorder at the party.

Also true. And it was Rob's camera which he had obviously owned for at least a few weeks, so you'd think he'd know better. Could just be attributed to a tissue vs. Kleenex type substitution.

Well, the original footage may have been shot on a tape-type format, but then transferred to Digital SD for the purpose of cataloging and showing to military officials. The original tape might not have been in good enough condition to allow repeat viewings.

Again - this camera doesn't use tape, it uses SD.

Well it was just a thought considering that the camera, as far as I can remember was never actually shown. And Rob did ask about changing the "tape." Its all just very confusing I suppose...

its def they found this filmmaterial on sd card

it is showing as text in the beginning of the movie

it is impossible that digital recorded material shows this old overlay probs
like magnetic bands they had

so this is not just a "tissue / kleenex" issue

its just a big big big logic mistake they had while makin the movie

or

some marketing guys from bad robot where drinking too much slusho while talking with the guys from panasonic Very Happy

I'm pretty sure we can all agree it was an SD card... but I wanna find out how the heck they fit a "7 hour" thrill ride of a night on a single SD... I know thier pretty durable, but the only SD's cabable of such are extremely expensive....

And that's not the only time a character references to it as a tape. After they emerge from the demolished store, a group of people congregate and argue about whether or not a monster knocked down the Woolworth Building, Hud then says something like:

Hud wrote:
Hey, hey, hey! Guys! Look, I have it on tape!
