Does anyone have a link to the earliest net posting of the idea that there is a hidden message the ending audio when it is played backwards? It seems like it would be very hard to get a clear audio recording on a device that you would beable to sneak into a movie theatre. If this idea could be trace backed to being leaked from the studio it is probably more than speculation.

Dunno about the first suggestion that it could be reversed, but as far as I know I was the first person to reverse it, my post's in the first page.

All of the topics in the other forums talking about the reverse message all link to my upload so I think it's reasonable to assume it's the first one, along with the fact that it's gotten over 20,000 listens in a day which it probably wouldn't if it weren't the first (I don't really know if 20,000 in a day is a lot, but generally with things like this everything that's not the first doesn't get many).

And I didn't do it because of another person's suggestion, the idea just came to me, so if I really am the first to attempt it then it'll be hard to trace any suggestions back before that.

I was messing around with the audio clip when I came across something interesting. I took the longest part of the whisper (it's still alive/help us) and put both the reversed and forward clips together. It resulted in "Help us, It's still alive" in what sounds like a complete sentence, meant to be heard together.

EDIT: Here's a picture of the sound files if anyone wants to try it themselves.

Totally creepy, it gave me chills! Shocked

My Boyfriend and I listened and agree that it sounds like "Help us, its still alive." I mean the exhale during the pause between the end of "us" and beginning of "its" sounds like a pause one would get if taking a breath and exhaling between words. This is really cool!

PS- Loved the movie and MGP!! Very Happy

Or, "Help us! We're still alive!" It would be creepy to think of them pinned under all that rubble, still breathing.

On another topic, I would love to see the shot in the movie where they were in the kitchen discussing Rob and Beth again. I want to check out the pics on the fridge. I wonder if we've seen them before...

Definitely ITS STILL ALIVE
You can low pass filter the hell out of it

Low pass filtering it pretty aggressively gets rid of all the digitization artifacts they added to the sound.

I rolled of at 2.5kHz to -12dB at 1kHz and its most definitely got a sibilant with the beginning sound, "its still alive."

Good find.

EDITED Bad filter corners

Just chiming in with my two cents. While it is possible that the message says "Help Us, It's still alive!", occam's razor would have us side with the idea of the message simply being the latter, "It's still alive!". The most likely intention of this message was to indicate not the survival of the characters, but rather the sequel-spamming license that is the survival of the monster.

While one might certainly be able to make a message out of the sound in reverse, it's clearly designed to be heard as the camcorder or radio of some sort starting up again (static starting out strong, fading) with a person saying the message after. But attempting to make this into a two-part backward-forward message is just a bit silly. The care that would have gone into the selection of words would have been absurd for the intended purpose when they could have just gone the less complicated route of simply saying "Help us, It's Still Alive!". Why would the producers layer this basic hint so thoroughly? Again, simplicity typically prevails, and it just seems improbable that this would be "help us" *or* a two-way/two-piece message.

But it was damned cool, that's for sure. After reading this thread, I just had to jump in. There is rampant overthinking for what amounts to a sub-three second hint. I don't feel up to the task of repeating myself in defense, so if someone feels like shooting me down, go for it. I made my case, I won't mind.

edit: grammatical malfunction

Over thinking solves ARG's.

I was just going through the Dark Night ARG thread and there is a part involving a safe. People were running through different sites, trying to find numbers. The solution to this puzzle was setting your computers clock to 7:38, which was a time listed in one of the sites. Basically you have to analyze and try out everything to make progress with these.

The whisper at the end is meant to be reversed to hear "It's still alive." The "help us" that we hear is just us trying to make sense out of the strange sounds that we don't understand.

It's only "It's still alive." Not a two-part phrase.

The "help us" is just a trick of the sound, and product of our over-attentive ears.

Of course, thinking outside the box is key, but this isn't some complex puzzle, it's just a sound which plays a voice in reverse. My suspicion as to why it wasn't played at a normal speed was just for this purpose, for us to latch onto the mystery and flip it around while not making some of the viewers feel as if it was a massive cop-out. I've been involved in a couple ARE/ARGs before, but this one has been fairly simple, seemingly designed for mass-consumption rather than the enjoyment of the veteran ARG-er (to some dismay within the community, I've noticed).

Edit: Damn my wordyness. Beaten! Wink

Great find Kit.

Overlaying the two sounds I assume means you essentially play both at the same time? The sound images taken together--combined if you will one on top of the other--makes a lot of sense.

Not only that, when I heard each sound clip individually before your discovery, the static clicks between spaces of almost silence were kind of odd to me--though not a big deal of course.

When you play both clips together the wording stands out better, and it's a more complete recording.

Good job.
