Does anyone actually have a video or sound clip of him saying the date? Does he say it normally or does it sound weird? The reason I am saying this is that the idea came into my head that it may be a reverse like the last line in the movie or something. Maybe it looks like he says May and it sounds like it, but could our ears be wrong? Could there be some hidden message in there somewhere? It just seems like something too stupid for us to build up to this point and have it all be back-asswards in the end. It is just messed up.
He says it normally and clearly, also there is a timestamp in the corner (like in the photos on 1-18-08.com) that puts the date in May.

Does no one think that all these different times could just be a plot error ? Or just that the movie and internet things just do not match up because they got ahead of themselves with little things like the timestamp on the photos being on 1-18 instead of 5-23?

I missed the director quote Thanks for mentioning this!

Honestly it amazes me how many people still don't get what happened with the dates.
Using the date in the first trailer was to get people interested in the film.
IT was never intended to be the day the events occurred in the movie.
The director flat out said this.
I'd figured it had to do with marketing, I went into a self-imposed media blackout to avoid spoilers.
Anyone can link the interview in question?
I get a kick out of the things ( marketing wise ) that got out of their control.

GOOD catch. maybe it's one of those things where it happens on may 23 because that's the date they picked. you know how some tv shows take place in some place, but they never really tell you where? maybe this is the same sort of thing, where they wanted to place it in time simply because they had to, and never meant for us to place it in our real life timeline.

Love the movie, but I'm definitely annoyed by all this date stuff. My main problem is that the ARE threw so MANY dates at us. Chuai opened in Sept 2007, all the TIDOWave posts, MySpace pages, the news reports of Chuai being destroyed. It doesn't affect how I feel about the movie, but I'm definitely frustrated at this ARE.

The MySpace comments place it in absolute real time, which totally conflicts with the film. It's a continuity screwup, no question. The fact the day vs date is also broken is just another continuity failure. Rob says right to the camera at the end that it's a Saturday, and the MySpace puts that day of the week as being right - so the error is not just because of the ARG. The whole thing is askew.
I find it an annoyance, but not enough to make it ruin the film for me. Don't let it ruin it for you.

didn't anyone notice that in the original trailer the people at the party aren't dressed for winter, and that the outside street and skyline didn't look like winter?

I think personally the idea of the ARE is to make it real time and believable, to an extent. Its how all the video's are portrayed, the news accounts, the updates on all the sites with their various memos and so on.
ARE is about advertising, after all, and it wouldn't make sense to not have it align with the release date, as opposed to the date the movie takes place.
As suggested elsewhere by many of you, there are too many obvious connections with the Myspace postings of a surprise party and the Jamie videos the few days before release, to the first 20 minutes of the movie.
Maybe JJ and company just hit a snag with when they needed to release the movie after production was started, and they just made the best of what they had.

JJ Has soimething up his sleeve If the ARG (As per the MySpace profiles) lead to it all happening on 1-18-08, why not just change the timestamp in the movie? I highly doubt 'plot error' is feasible because for a whole 5 months, the movie was ALL ABOUT the date 1-18-08!!! --> Not exactly something to foirget. Also, the movie is always shown to SOMEONE before even the pre-screenings just to help the producers and directors to get some feedback before the general public sees it - I'm sure someone would have brought it up...
Also, why is it so important to show us that the movie was filmed in May? Was an exact timescale for the time b/w rob and beth and the party absoloutlely necessary? I mean, If it happened a month OR a year apart, would that change anything?
Rob found out about his Job at Slusho! only 13 days before the ARG points to his supposed party... but according to the movie's timescale, Rob and Beth were discussing Rob's move to Japan at least a month before the party in the movie...
I think he has something up his sleeve...

Yup, and it wouldn't make sense to do it any other way.
Can you imagine Jamie saying she's going to open the box in April, and leaving it to people to subtract a few months off to work out what time the next video would appear on the website? That makes less sense and seems less immersive to me.
If people are so insistent on this being an alternate reality, what's wrong with treating it like an alternate reality? The dates have been changed to protect the promotion.
The film was never truly in real time, we've known that since the main trailer came out.

i agree with adriansd. I know he has something up his sleeve.
he wouldn't spend time creating characters/slusho/tido if he had nothing planned.if it wasnt actual date, he would change the myspace dates.
why wouldnt they? everything is in their control!
