[SPEC][SPOILERS] Baby MGP/Wide Eyes/Mother and Child
Ganu, Mother, Manga, and Slusho!

Hey everyone,
I've been thinking about several things for a while now that I want to talk about. First off, in a recent interview, Matt Reeves talks about how MGP has "separation anxiety".

Now, in the Cloverfield Manga, it seems that the child has separation anxiety from his mother who died.
(I'll come back to this)

On the Slusho! site, it talks about Ganu and his mother, and how she died. Now, Slusho and the Manga seem to be connected, right?

Well, in the interview with Matt Reeves, he says that JJ wanted MGP to have a shocked look in his eyes. Now, if you look at the Slusho! website and the commercial, all the animals seem to have wide eyes, maybe because they're in shock?

And to go along with the Slusho! commercial, the man who has Slusho! in his belly opens the door, sees something, and seems to be shocked.

The theme throughout these several elements is being shocked or having sorrow about something. Now, I believe that, as many others have said, that Tagruato's drillings woke MGP up and he lost his way, and he is unsure of the new climate, so he decides to go to NYC and tear everything up because he's pissed.

What they were trying to get across was that MGP is a baby and he is shocked and has separation anxiety, and I think that the theme recurred throughout the whole Viral Marketing Campaign, what with the Slusho! Commercial Man being egged on by the Moose to "take an opportunity', and the animals on the Slusho! site seem to be shocked. This goes along with the manga and how the young boy misses his mother and how he has a connection with MGP.

Another "separation anxiety" theme could be seen in Jamie's videos to Teddy, since she misses him so bad and how she obesses over him. And, in the film, we see that after every character loses someone who is dear to them, they have separation anxiety (well, of course).

So, sorry if my thoughts were confused and jumbled, but I think that J.J. was trying to push the theme of separation anxiety throughout the whole Campaign, as he wanted Cloverfield to be a representation of our fears, and how not just the characters of the movie feared, but the monster did, also.

Thanks for the time, and again, I apoligize if my thoughts are across the map!

Very good paralleling. When I read the Manga I felt that the child and monster must have something in common and I thought the bully's/Tagruato was the only connection. Yours also seems relevant and a theme in the movie(
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Beth and Rob apart, Lily and Hawk, and to a lesser extent Hud with Marlena)
.

I like the way you connected all this. very interesting, and it all makes sense to me.

I approve, I thought of the same thing while reading the manga. The boy is seperated from his mom, hes crying and alone and angry. MGP is seperated from... his mom? Shocked and is in New York and angry, and being shot at...
I don't really buy the "psychic link" between kinshin and MGP that some people are pushing, I really like the way you put all this together.

That I think is an excellent observation of motif and I suspect it's something Reeves and Abrams probably intended.

I like it, nice observation.

[whispers softly] But you better be careful, the Cthulhu fans may latch onto this and think that it is Cthulhu's baby or something.

Nice analysis. I think that it probably was intentional, but one of the more subtle themes running through the ARE/Movie.

See, the parallel between MGP and "Ace" in the Manga has been brought up. I'm sure the other three comic installments will delve deeper into it.

Here is a quote from Matt Reeves about it being a baby missing it's mommy:

Quote:
The key to it is that the monster was a baby. The monster was suffering from separation anxiety and was absolutely disoriented and pissed, "where's mommy?", and terrified. That was the most important aspect of the creature.

Interview found here: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=41100

Someone has started a new thread about the interview. I just wanted post the baby quote here since it related to this.

After I read the interview I had the same thoughts as well...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Is it just me or at the end of the movie when they are in central park, is the monster Hud runs into coming from the opposite direction? I think there is also bombing still going on in the city as if they were still trying to kill the 'baby' monster. Perhaps the monster at the very end is the mom's appearance? I'm just not sure why, if it's the same monster, it would appear so far away from the city and be heading back to it.

Possible tie-in to a sequel? Although, I'm sure if there is a sequel, it'll just be another perspective/video from that night, or a bunch of videos, and maybe interrogations or something, close to that time period, and would explain a little more about the monster's orgins, tying in Tagruato, TIDO, and Slusho. Pretty obvious that Rob was becoming the VP for Slusho, or one of Slusho's affiliates right? Also, I think Tagruato's tie-in with the monster is that it somehow produced it, I think at their drilling locations they do experiments with some of the animals to put them in drinks/food, and somehow created a mutated creature or something to that extent. Then TIDO or another 'terrorist' faction destroyed the drill rig and unleashed the monster.

It's possible Ganu is used as a metaphor for the monster,
It certainly seems like it with the final Tagruato message about him shaking off his attackers who poured liquid (napalm?) over him.

Yeah, I've always thought that Ganu was meant to be a metaphore for the monster. Just look at the story told in the Slusho history page.

Just me being me, how the hell does this thing have eyes? If its from the bottom of the ocean it wouldn't have eyes because there is no light.
