I think I was the only one that noticed Hud's dismemberment and splitting at the middle when he was spat out of the mouth...
It hasn't been mentioned anywhere else. It was so sickening, I mean I loved Hud, that scene hit me so hard.
It was amazing. I mean, I can't put it into words.

I don't feel super bad for him now, considering he got Marlena, and Hud killed (possibly himself) just for Beth.
Ofcourse, without him going back for her.. we wouldn't have had much of a movie.
I kind of got the impression that this wasn't all about Beth; it's what Jason was telling him to do on the conversation on the fire escape just before the proverbial fit hit the shan. After the bridge, that decision to go after Beth was also about paying respect to Jason in a way.

Rob didn't force anyone to go with him, though. He was prepared to go alone. It was their decision to tag along.

The movie was even better then I could have hoped for. If I could draw I would make myself a flaming hobo avatar for the boards.
The main thing I want to know more about is the little monster guys. What's in their venom? Do they just kill you or do they lay eggs?

I loved the movie to death. It exceeded all of my expectations, for sure.

I have to say I agree that this wasn't just a film about 'the boy getting the girl' because Rob goes back for Beth. It is very much about being true to the ones you care about, and showing respect for them. The loss of Hawk solidifies everyone's resolve to help Rob have a chance to reconcile things with Beth and try to keep themselves together. Lily understands this of course because of how she feels about Hawk, and despite Marlena's cynical misgivings about their chances she sees the importance of the bond and respect that enought to help Lily in this whole endeavor. Of course Hud wants to help his best friend, and because he seems to have the greatest breadth of ties to the whole group he's compelled to honor the bond as well. If you could ask the characters as they died if they regretted it, I suspect they would say they didn't at all. The way that Lily seems to have survived and escaped successfully kind of shows that you couldn't predict if any of them were going to survive in any case. Rob, Beth, and Hud had no reason to think they weren't escaping alive, fate just changed that destiny.

The Epic and The Personal I hit a sold out show in Los Angeles on Friday night. Had 6 walkouts about 30 minutes in (stupid young guys who spent time texting during the film.) The moment the film ended, I sensed that the crowd was NOT happy, They seemed to like the movie but were blindsided by the ending. I understood that there really was no other ending possible.
My bullit points:
I am content with the time I have invested for six months.
I am impressed with the world/story by the creative team (producers, writes, directors, actors)
I think MGP is an amazing creation, even though I don't have a clean mental image.
I like the rules used to created the flashbacks (must be only Rob and Beth on the day after sleeping together and the time must have jumped from the last time the taping was interuped) when Hud stopped the tape to show everybody standing in the street and you get 30 seconds or so of the day, inspired.
Last I want to note a META topic. It has been discussed on this forum and in reviews, but it is the key element in my personal enjoyment of the film.
This is a personal story in an epic construct.
I loved Buffy, when the stories clashed the mythic and personal (The Body.) I enjoyed the X-Files when the mythology impacted the individuals. Lost works when these "ordinary" people are confronted by events beyond their comprehension, and "Serenity/Firefly" told the struggle of the individual against the Powers that be. These are the stories I like, so Cloverfield worked for me.
I saw in one review the term "self-absorbed twenty-somethings" to describe the characters, I disagree. Rob's relentless focus on getting to Beth is selfless. He is seeking that "moment" his brother mentions on the fire escape.

I loved how realistic (and gut wrenching) some of the scenes were. Like when the bridge collapsed - you see just this shower of water, and then next thing you know Rob's brother is whapped by the cable (or whatever). It was violent and sudden, just like real life tragedies are.
The leaning apartment scene was also really cool (especially from the inside, looking through Beth's window and seeing everything at an angle that no building dweller would ever like to see). I've had bad dreams where I'm in high structures that are slowly tipping over, so that one really got to me.
I have mixed emotions about the lice monsters though. One side of me is like "Cool! MGP has killer crabs!" But another part of me was thinking that, until CGI effects are perfected, Hollywood needs to keep the animation to a minimum (I hate when I'm watching a live action movie that seems to switch to cartoon mode whenever the film makers want to show something that can't be done by a guy in a rubber suit).

My biggest emotional tie in to the movie was an intense "what are you doing" as Rob runs back to Midtown and the Warzone instead of trying to get off Manhatten.
At the end there is a love story that intertwines into this movie. Almost humanizes a crazy devestation. Rob realized he had screwed up in his handling of his relationship and a going for it to right the wrong.
it was a telling subplot to this movie

Saw first showing in my town First showing in my town was 3:25 pm Friday EST. I saw it and was
so excited and I watched somewhat critically telling myself to
look for Jamie and look for the helicopter scene, the tunnel scene,
the thing drop from the sky. I did not see the thing drop from the sky even though I was looking for it. I will definitely see this movie a few more time before it comes out on DVD. I hope there are several more sequels, prequels.
The length of the film actually worked. Reezchannel said they like the length because so many movies these days are just too long.
There were signs at the ticket booth that said "Cloverfield was filmed with a handheld camera. If you are prone to motion sickness, please take this into account before purchasing tickets."

I could definitely see the ARG go on for a sequel.
I am not sure they would want to continue the ARG story where it left off too much at this point though, based on the fact the movie still hasn't opened around the world yet. It would be like putting the cart before the horse, as though the story continued on without all these other people being involved. It appears as though the ARG wasn't focused just within N. America.
Who knows, I am guessing.
