Sequels/Prequels - It's GONNA happen You're forgetting the 2 most important things here... First off is the money being made.
What was the opening weekend haul? $41 mil?
And word-of-mouth along with repeat viewers - that number wil get to $100+ very quickly.
THAT alone will get another movie green-lighted.
But the biggest reason (besides all the clues in the film, the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"it's still alive" backwards voice at the end
, and all the links to all the critics suggesting as such) is because Abrams said that he wanted "America's monster" or some such quote.
Don't you all remember at the beginning of all this when Abrams went to Japan and his kid saw the Godzilla crap and thought - "hey, we need that too". How many Godzilla movies are there? A hundred? (sarcasm... ) Abrams wants this monster to be "our" monster franchise - not a one-shot deal.
There WILL be another movie - I just hope that it's as uniquely told and crafted as well as this one was.

I hope they make a sequel, but we have to keep in mind that interviews with some of the cast members is moot, since they are

But is Lily the only survivor? Do we know for a fact that Rob and Beth are dead? I guess its a safe bet to assume so but they could survive that if the bridge fell right. Also is it significant that its Robs voice at the end of the credits sayings "it's still alive"?

He actually said "Help US"
Backwars it is "It's still alive"
I think Rob and Beth may actually have survived.
Storyline he goes to Japan with Beth to start a new life. And MPG reappears in Japan!!!!!!

Could "help us" or "it's still alive" possibly be lines from the sequel?

That wasn't Rob's voice, it was Matt Reeves.

No when he said that he went in and recorded it real quick he meant that he had it recorded real quick, he's the director people, come on! And also, if this is america's godzilla, than it's beginning just like godzilla did. First godzilla movie began with godzilla destroying tokyo, and then he began the battle against every monster ever. Get ready for Godzilla vs MGP or Clovie or Hudavore or whatever you want to call him!!!

No Eurche is right Matt recorded it. theres a big difference in "He recorded it" and "He had someone record it".
He even said himself that there was something at the end for us to catch.
By no means do I think that this came from Rob. There is nothing that points at him saying this at all.
But thats an whole different thread in itself.
Yes there is a sequel coming. No doubt. Any sane producer would realize how much cash this movie is raking in and by all means would be jumping to make another.

I don't know who it was directed to, but it seems like a rebuttal to the anti-sequel crowd. In that case, why isn't it posted in a sequel topic?
Either way, if you had put any effort into reading the other sequel topics, you would know that NO ONE has forgotten anything you said. EVERYONE is aware of every single point you're making. This is hardly new info.
And I'm sorry you believe Cloverfield will benefit from your curiosity and desire for more. I hope your greed doesn't kill my favorite movie.

The way Matt Reeves responds to the question about the whisper indicates that this was one of the very last things done in post-production before distribution - that it was done quickly in order to meet the release deadline. The idea behind this would be that Paramount receives early projections as to how well the movie would do in box office sales - If projections indicated the move would lose money a sequel would not be authorized and the project would die or be otherwise funded independently; but instead because the viral marketing fueled interest in the movie and showed favorable profits a sequel would be authorized. Because of Reeves and Abrams' interest in creating a Godzilla-like franchise for the monster they likely had a prearrangement with Paramount to authorize a sequel at this point, which gave just enough time to add simple and ambiguous hints of that in post-production. Simple because they don't have the time to add footage of draft up a lot of graphics to embed in the movie, ambiguous just in case the movie flops and Paramount nulls a sequel.
The two most important things we've forgotten are that Abrams and Reeves want to make MGP into the American Godzilla, which requires us first to get a really good look at the monster so we know what the toy will look like when we go to buy it; and to have a really worthwhile monster movie franchise you have to introduce more monsters at some point in time - if MGP is a baby, there's bound to be a mommy, and possibly a daddy if we exclude parthenogenesis, and maybe more for a viable surviving species, and from the looks of things the military has boxed up parasites for future study.
But from what we've been given, I would say that a sequel was already green-lighted.

My thinking is that if Abrams wants this to become a franchise monster then NO there will not be a sequel. There will without a doubt be another movie with the same "cloverfield" monster in it. A sequel I doubt it.
Also, as far as who survived: Rob's brother??????
No confirmation about him cept....
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
He got blasted down thru the Brooklyn(?) bridge. The only one's we actually witnessed die were Hud and Marlena.
As far as Reeves voice at the end? I thought it may be Rob. I don't know what Matt Reeves whisper sounds like...so who know. Makes sense it would be Rob. As far as what Reeves said about "he recorded it...." He is the director of the film, regardless of whose voice it may be he did record it in a rush at somepoint whatever he stated. If and when anything gets recoreded for a movie, the director calls the shots. That does not imply it was his own voice. That is a matter of linguistic semantics.
