Our success story for Cloverfield
What did you contribute?

So it is not a ground breaking statement to say that whole point of the viral campaign was to create excitement for movie and ultimately that buzz would equal to money at the box office.

Side note: I personally think that in the Tivo/Youtube culture that our generation has become, viral marketing will be the most effective tool in the product of tomorrow.

But how do you feel like you have personally influenced the success of the movie?

I brought a group of 13 people, most of whom did not either even know about the movie or were not planning on seeing it in the theater. I made it a whole night event, with dinner, drinking, movie, clubbing to entice ppl to go. I also was talking about it at work and confirmed that at least 3 other direct contacts went to see it based on my excitement. That is not counting their GFs, wives, etc. I planned my "cloverfield day" festivities last minute so I know of about 6 more ppl who said that they would see within the week.

So how many people did you bring to the fold? Or how many times have you seen it so far? (Seeing multiple times still equal more $)

I got nobody else interested in the movie because all my friends had already wanted to see it.

I've only seen it once, I would see it a couple more times, but I'm a college student and I have alot of school work to do and not alot of money.

Once was enough for me. If I watch a movie too many times I start to not like it.

It comes across that we viral fans wrote the story for them, and they just supplied it for them. They gave the leads, and our speculations finished it. They put up Slusho (Which, in reality, was just a store for the shirts/Hats!). Then they created Tagruato. When we saw a oil drilling station near NY we created the story of Tagruato being a dishonest corporation and locating a monster for their use. Poof, we get Tidowave, that fuels that fire. We speculated for months Chaui Station would play a big part, and look: It gets destroyed in a nice Youtube fashion. Just like the movie.

The movie fails to pay off us viral fans except in small doses. What drives us crazy is we created the idea that the monster is from Chaui station, then we see something drop into the ocean a month before during the movie. Obviously we were driving the story, and look even Tagruato starting posting it was exploring SPACE as well as the oceans! I Think that was a direct way of trying to persuade us down the path of possibly the monster comes from space. However, we ignored it. Since we ignored it, the ARG continued to focus on the Tag/Tidowave/Monster from the deep storyline. IT seems Reeves and JJ can't even get their stories straight with their comments regarding the monster's origin.

We expected one thing, and got another however it provides no definitive answers. Just propelling the sequel but most fueling our interest in the downtime.

I got nobody else interested in it. I had heard rumblings about it and seen the first images for it last summer, but it never really interested me that much. I finally succumbed to the hype over the weekend, did some research on the background of it all, and saw it Sunday night by myself. I enjoyed the movie. Even though I had read the whole plot and knew what happened in the end, it was definitely worth paying to see just for the visual aspect of it all.

... I've seen it twice now, once Friday (1-18-08, baby!) and again last night - kept me ticket stubs (of course), and would love to go see it again (and again - lol)..! Very Happy ...
