That is a VERY accurate rendition. However, Two things I noticed.

1) Unless the joints can swing like, almost 360 degrees, dont the front legs come forward more?

2) the face still doesnt look 100% accurate. in that final scene when hud gets eaten, that thing looks absolutely PISSED. You can see in its eyes that it just looks furious.

Re: Creature drawing (spoilers, if you agree with my drawings?)

chuparex wrote:

I saw an advance screening last Thursday in Gainesville, FL.

Here's a quick sketch of what I think is a fairly accurate representation, based on what I could see. Among the other people I've talked to, no one can seem to agree on...

I was there with ya in G'ville, and I just saw it for the second time yesterday. Some thoughts:

--That's the best rendition I've see yet, but far. Way to go, Chuparex! I'm going to post that on my cloverfield blog, with credit of course.

--I agree with others that the front legs seemed to have a batwing bone structure. Down, then up, then down again. They seemed very long, and a bat''s wingbones are probably as long or longer than their whole body. To get a decent look at the front arms, you can view the animated screen shots linked at http://www.kidreviewer.com/2008/01/cloverfield-2008.html

--I'm fine with the head in your drawing. Others were too apelike for my test. I felt his neck went straight up from his shoulders to his jaw, very muscular, not like a human neck or a snakes.

--I remember he has a broad upper back. If you look at the screen shots linked above, at some parts you can see that he is really flared in the area I think is called the trapezoid muscle in humans. I also thought I saw something up the middle of his front belly that I haven't seen anyone capture. I can't describe it,but something was going on there.

--I'm not so sure about the back legs being grasshopper style. I had a feeling they were more t-rex like, but they don't seem prominent when I saw him from above or the look of him advancing when they were on the roof.

--one of my friends swore the tail was forked, so you'd be on there, but I didn't notice that.

--when the 'tentacle' slams down on the bridge, there was definitely something along the underside of it. My mind suggested suckers, but my friend thought there were 'lights'. That would jive with the post that suggested bone structures that reflected light in certain designs. I couldn't tell if that 'tentacle' was it's tail, or connected somewhere else, but it definitely wasn't straight like an arm or leg. It whipped.

--To the hater: subscribe to filmmetro.com for advance screening tix. We weren't priveleged media types in G'ville, in fact the press never showed. We drove 2 hours to get there, waited 3, and 2 back home. We paid a price to get those early reviews and sketches, don't be hatin'.

--on my second viewing, I def saw the object fall from the sky into the ocean.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I also saw that in a split second, when they were pulling Rob from the helicopter, the camera twists and catches that the monster is standing right behind them. They never look that way till HUD runs back for the camera. That's why you don't hear him approach, he was there for awhile. He must have come while they were all unconscious after the crash.

--I haven't seen a good screen capture of the little creatures, but I'm still wondering if they are younger versions or earlier phases of the MGP. They are skinnier and faster, but I saw some similiarities that suggest they could grow into the big one. Open for discussion on that point though.

--Finally, there's one common trend I've seen in the whole 8 days or so since people started posting sketches and describing the monster: He's hard to describe. No one could pigeon hole him or label him as a big lizard, a godzilla, a dinosaur, a whale, etc. I think some real credit has to go to the director/artisans for coming up with something disturbing and pretty original. It was an ugly abomination, and I like it the more I see it. I think people that are saying the monster was 'stupid' (see slashfilm), haven't yet absorbed it as a whole yet. I can't wait till the concepts are distributed from the filmmakers, so we can see the details they were thinking of in the construction.

--BTW, I completely enjoyed the movie the first time, but I liked it even more the second time. I knew where and when to look, noticed more. I don't know why, but I even cared more about the characters the second time, though I don't suggest they were oscar performances. They seemed,in fact, ordinary people, but then weren't they supposed to be?

Here's an extremely quick sketch (mostly to portray the arms and how..weird they are).

Photobucket

I cut off the bottom half of the monster because..well.. I'm not entirely sure how that looks.

Aside from the front right leg of it being just slightly too thin, i think he nailed it.

Looks absolutely BADASS when drawn accurately.

I think this dude got the face as close to perfect as you can get. He got the long front arms pretty damn good too.

there's another thing wrong with it
the arms on the underbelly
they are not that long...and there is at least 6 of them
and I am willing to bet my slusho shirt on that...along with my life!!!

Matt Frank is a god. That head is a perfect representation of what's seen when the monster eats Hud, except that there seems to be a point on the top of MGP's head (or the beginning of a ridge, or something of that sort):

I think that is the most accurate representation of the head, forelimbs, and hind limbs. I think the tail is a bit too flexible and I still contend it had a slight and elongated diamond shaped spading at the end.

Trixx I'd take you up on that bet if I had anything decent to counter with. I'm pretty sure there were only 2 limbs on the belly, and certainly no more than 4. Time will tell.

In the scene in the helicopter as the B-2 bomber carpet bombs MGP, watching the monster run kind of reminded me of the lizard-thingy that Obi-Wan Kenobi was riding when he was fighting General Grievous in "Revenge of the Sith". Did anyone else think that, or am I alone? And did I just prove how big of a geek I am?

Well, I'm updating my fan art. Here are some lines before filling in the details.
