Okay, I'm saying it just to say it... Did anyone consider the thought that J.J. Abrams didn't mean 'a baby' in the literal sense? When I read it, along w/ the other material- it sounds to me that the surface world is all new and frightening to it.
This quote from Matt Reeves should clear up your "baby" issue:
Quote:
The key to it is that the monster was a baby. The monster was suffering from separation anxiety and was absolutely disoriented and pissed, "where's mommy?", and terrified. That was the most important aspect of the creature. Not only was he furious and in a rage but he was scared, because to me there's nothing scarier than something huge that's spooked.
Edit: Transparent Blue beat me to it.

Also, Does anyone remember what Marlena said in the beginning part of the destruction? After the building collapses and they eventually come out of the store... Trixx is correct, she said it was eating everyone.

So..you'd rather her say "it's sucking everyone"?
I..wouldn't prefer that.

thats the only possible way you managed to form that?
its sucking everyone up
it was sucking people into its stomach
makes far more sense then its sucking everyone
if you saw something like that you would want to get it across to people properly, you wouldnt say eaten

There is another interview with Reeves, and i apologize that i cant find the link to it, where he says its "like" a baby, seeing the world for the first time, plus he also states that its been underwater for thousands of years , so how could it be a baby? Seems like conflicting statements there. Plus the exact thing Marlena was saying was " Why was it eating everyone?" , she said it two or three times. On the Reeves quote, im not saying anyones wrong , im just saying it seems conflicting. How can something be a baby if its thousands of years old? But then again, were dealing with a mythical beast, so i guess anythings possible

I call it the "cicada theory." I'm not saying that MGP is a cicada (he totally isn't), but I do think that they share a similar lifestyle (comparatively) which gives us a glimpse of similar phenomena in reality.

However, the one time we actually see MGP eat someone, he definitely uses his mouth. Why would he have two different ways of eating?

Well when he does "eat" with his mouth it doesnt really show the person to be eaten, you dont see their whole body, you just see that the monster kinda chews him up and spits him back on the groud. Maybe he has to chew up the subject then suck it through the underbelly "tube" things? I dunno, just an idea whether it makes much sense at all or not.

matt reeves said that there were things that the monster was able to do that they didn't have a place or the budget to show in the movie...and i'm assuming this was one of them

i guess this was to just let us know that the monster can do something else instead of putting things in its mouth.
...those suckers are kinda weird heh? lol.
i think she used eat because its something she assumed when she saw people being "taken" by it?

Or maybe she was just shaken up by the fact that there was a giant monster in NYC, that typically doesn't happen. I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty certain that if I were in the situation, I wouldn't be too worried about accurately representing what the monster was doing.

Sooo lazy!
You'd scream, "Run! Just run!" C'mon, people need more information.

Run! Run! Some creature whose head appears vaguely bat-like, and it had 2 "elbows" per arm, what's that called, "multi-articulated" wha? Thanks internet lurker, and it had 2 smaller arms that served no purpose near as I could tell ... anyways, it's approximately 25 stories tall, but this is in a "4 legged stance" ...

I think it just had teethy tubes on its belly that it grabbed people with. Then, it may have thrown them into its mouth or sucked them into its stomach.
