To keep others from wasting effort...

Converting the letters into numbers, and thus ip addresses...

Details of 121.119.65.22
IP Address : 121.119.65.22
Location : Japan (95% accuracy)
Host Name : i121-119-65-22.s05.a011.ap.plala.or.jp

bleh.. unfortunately, the address leads to nothing.

Puzzle 3 - Not a phone number??

ABAAAIFEBB - 10 characters = phone number?

222-224-3322 Not valid

ABAAAIFEBB = 121-119-6522 and reversed 225-691-1121 neither valid

I do not have a touch tone phone so can someone try the numbers to see if it makes a recognized song??

I've been away for a while, so I'm probably rusty, but this looks like a good place to start. I really like the writing and puzzles in this ARG so far.

Staying on the musical theme, the letters could represent lyrics. I remember doing a Christmas ARG where one of the puzzles was a string of letters that represented the first letter of a word in a lyric from a Christmas song.

Better illustrated by an example; OWFIITR would be. . .
"Oh what fun it is to ride. . ." from Jingle Bells.

Highwind suggested something like this in response to number 3, I think.

The problem here is that there doesn't seem to be any real parameters. Right now I'm looking for any hints about artist/song/genre, but really there doesn't seem to be much to go on. I'll keep working on this angle though (The only possible hints I see so far is the mention of the "storm outside" and "What if it's not as short underneath as it appears on top?", but I don't know what either mean, if anything.)

Found a tone generator
Do any of these .wav files sound familiar?

Found a Phone tone Generator at http://dialabc.com/sound/generate/index.html?pnum=2256911121&auFormat=wavpcm8&toneLength=300&mtcontinue=Generate+DTMF+Tones

Please listen to the number tones to see if you can recognize a song (I couldn't)

New message, and another website. You have to email AD to get the picture she has, but it leads to another blog:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://vile-villain.blogspot.com/

Our villain seems to be a bit of an egomaniac, if nought else.

My friend who reads music gave me a thing that might help...

[00:28] Me: i was misquoting AD it was "What if it's not as short underneath as it appears on top?"
[00:30] Friend: Well, there's one thing in music sort of like that.
[00:30] Me: there is?
[00:31] Friend: Yeah, a dot.
[00:31] Friend: Placed UNDER a note, it makes it short. Staccato.
[00:31] Me: a dot?
[00:31] Friend: Placed next to a note, it makes it longer by a half.

So he suggested running it through a coder with the word "staccato" as the key, alas nothing.

EDIT: Different friend suggested using the world "trebleclef" we are probably very far off, but it's a shot, right?

puzzle 2 and puzzle 3... connected?

I have a few questions being a little new to this i anm struggling to determine exactly where you are in respect to AD.

did anyone solve Puzzle two yet?

Has anyone read through the whole nirvana song for further clues?

as for puzzle three. i went through the sound bites and I definitely heard a song. but my musical aptitude is crap. when i asked a friend about the melody that i thought it was she said i was describing "ode to joy" but she didn't hear it herself. also for some reason one of those sound bytes reminds me of yankee doodle.

puzzle two was solved a while back -->

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Out of all the ballets I composed, I hate the music I wrote for The Nutcracker." The answer they were looking for was Tchaikovsky.

Well, after another IM with her, AD pointed out another post on the Villain's blogspot. Anyway, some random snippets that may (Or may not) be of use:
Quote:
highwind767: Can I ask you a question about him? I don't need details so you can keep any oaths you made, just some of your impressions on him.
assassindiaries: sure
assassindiaries: i'll see what i can do
highwind767: Does he seem...normal? Is he sort of different from everyone else?
highwind767: I'm just sort of wondering from some of the stuff on his blog
assassindiaries: he's... not "normal" in the usual sense of the word
assassindiaries: i didn't like working for him before
assassindiaries: because he's, well, a lot of what he says sounds logical at first, when he talks of gaining power and control
assassindiaries: he functions like any "normal" person
assassindiaries: you'd never pick him out of a crowd
highwind767: Thanks. It's just that I think he may not be "local" or "normal" in the normal sense of the word. It's just the vibe I'm picking up from the blog. I take English as an A Level subject over here, so I'm used to picking out this sort of stuff
highwind767: I'd almost definitely wager he's not human
assassindiaries: hmmm
assassindiaries: interesting
highwind767: You want to know some of the lines which give me that feeling?
assassindiaries: yes, please
highwind767: "You are the smartest man ever to reside on this wayward rock." "If only the world knew what they were missing…

If only the world knew what they were up against…" "May as well use their technology (and their love of it) against them"
highwind767: Makes me think he could be from a whole other world or dimension. But then again, it could be too many books taking their toll on me
assassindiaries: hmmm
assassindiaries: i shouldn't be surprised by anything after all that i've seen
assassindiaries: i mean, alien? or demonic?
highwind767: Could be anything. Could be an alien, demon, time-traveler, someone from a different dimension, or even just a suspicious mind and active imagination looking for things that aren't there.
assassindiaries: it might be worth looking into
assassindiaries: i mean
assassindiaries: as much as he isn't overtly different than other "villains" i've known, he has his subtleties

Quote:
assassindiaries: well, i think we've done all we can with the letters
assassindiaries: i can't find any code to them
highwind767: So you'd bet it's something to do with the numbers then?
assassindiaries: i just can't see that it would be anything else
assassindiaries: the letters don't mean anything that i can see
assassindiaries: no lyrics match those letters, no song titles...
assassindiaries: that i could find, anyway

On the subject of the numbers, try looking for an ISMN (International Standard Music Number) since it's 10 digits, and is used as an identifier for printed music.
It's far too late for me to look, and google refuses to bring up any answers for me, so I'm off now to get some well earned sleep. Good luck with that guys.

ISMNs are 10 digits but start with an 'M'. It's also not a valid ISBN number, for what that's worth (checksum doesn't add up).

I get the gut feeling that the numbers are off and that we should be looking for lyrics or album titles or something with the initials of the string. The hints she seems to be dropping sure seem to point in that direction.

Has anyone noticed that the Villain updated his blog? He says:
Quote:
I was able to convince one truly onerous simpleton to post a couple of pictures on one of those dreadful internet societies which people use to share memories.

So I've already tried tag searching Flickr for "V.L.N." and "villain", obviously not much help. I'm going to search photobucket now, but maybe he meant a social networking site, like Myspace or Friendster, what do ya'll think?

Yup, I noticed that as well. The blog updated on Thursday (Although AD did have to bring it up with me) But without knowing who the person is, or what the images are, it'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Assassin Diaries updated yesterday, with hopefully another hint to point us in the right direction:

Quote:
In response to your query, and only b/c I owe you! There is something to do with a group - SM, I found the odd bits left around but it is to my advantage to leave it alone. I don't tell anyone. It remains secret and I get more business.

She also says she's given up on the letters and is sticking to the numbers, which means we prolly oughta too.

ETA: I can't decide what I should be trying to do with this hint. Do I look for a group (musical) whose initials are SM? Do I try and anagram "SM, I found the odd bits left around"? Do I notice that if I change the number into binary, I -do- have an odd number of bits? I'm so confused.

She got that info from asking about TM, so I don't think it's related to our puzzle, but the story. But hey, you never know, so try it if you want. It's not as if we're getting very far on this one anyway.
If this puzzle turns out to be so easy it's near obvious, I'm gonna scream.
