Rob, at the end, says the day of week, month and date in his farewell speech. I don't recall the exact date he said, and not that it matters much probably, but has anyone bothered to check if it syncs up with the current year?

As stated by Starship, the 22nd falls on a Saturday in 2009. Not 2008. Or 2010.

I don't think it happened in 2009 because I don't remember anyone ever saying what year it was. If it does take place in 2009, it could be when the military finds it and it's a coincidence that it's a year or two after.

Completely unrelated, but the Wikipedia page is now much more detailed. It claims that J. J. confirmed that the dark object was the satalittle and it disturbed MGP's sleep.

Rob says at the end of the movie, in his "goodbye" speach that it's Saturday, May 23rd. That date doesn't fall on a Saturday untill 2009. That's where people are getting the year from.

May 22nd is on Friday 2009. May 23rd is on Saturday 2009.

FYI, semi protected doesn't mean jack on Wikipedia, just that you have to register an account to edit, which anyone can do, no questions asked, and yes, edit in any old shite they like. Only fully protected articles are blocked from everybody (but admins) editing them.

EDIT: You just have to age the account a few days to be able to edit it, unless its fully protected, then no one can.

I have to agree that the movie takes place in the future or next year. In the movie there is no year depicted at any portion of the film. We see May 22 and the time periodically when Hud is recording at the party and then We see the April dates and time when we get the flashbacks. Neither of which give a year.

Rob basically gives the year away at the end of the movie when he states the day, date and time.

1-18-08 being placed on the photos, myspace, etc. is just a marketing tool to help implant it so that we all could count down the time remaining until we were able to go and see the movie.

I would not expect any further development of the game from the creators/puppet masters end having 1-18-08 mentioned at all.

Was anyone else really pissed off about that though?

Not a big reason, but some of the reason I thought this was going to be cool was because of the fact that it takes place on the date it's coming out, or so I thought.

I still loved the movie but that minor inconsistency pisses me off to no end.

Well, to be fair, that kind of thing only works once, and only works for the audience who views the movie on opening night. Just doesn't make sense when you think about it from that standpoint.

I'm just saying, I think it would work no matter what. If it had taken place on 1/18/08, it could have gone both ways. For instance, if you followed the ARG or were seeing it opening night, it adds just a little something extra to the experience. If you see it after the fact, or weren't following it closely enough to remember, it doesn't hurt to have the date there anyway. 1/18/08 is just as good a date as May 22 anyway, so why not?

I see what you mean, but having it on a date further in the future tends to enhance the real feel of a film. Part of the fun is suspending disbelief, it's a little bit harder to do if you know a movie has already happened (and hence it hasn't really happened). To me, it's not a big deal either way, but I can see how some focus group or advertising exec might think otherwise.

1. I don't think it would compete with Transformers AT ALL. I think it would fail badly.
2. Paramount's not stupid, they wouldn't pit two of their movies against each other.

Ha, true.

Transformers 2 two isn't slated for release until June '09 anyways.
