Officially:
A Trekket is someone who watches Star Trek
A trekkie is someone who collects Star Trek memorabilia
A Trekker is the COMPLETE fan!

Regarding wich side of the Trekkie/Trekker line I fall on?

I would say,

"I like Star Trek. Don't try to pin a label on me baby. I'm the wind."

My Star Trek knowledge is by no means complete, but I... Know quite a bit.

The way I understand it (with tongue planted firmly in cheek) is that a "trekkie" is a fan of Star Trek and "trekker" is what trekkies call each other to make it sound slightly less nerdy. Either way, the first thing I think of when hearing either is that William Shatner bit on Saturday Night Live a number of years ago. "Have you ever even kissed a girl???"

[trout?] Is that Audio?

I'm really new to this and I'm pulling it out of my A**,
but those tracks look like audio, esp. the top one.
It's like multi-track audio displayed spectrally...
any way to play something like that back and see if it says anything??

Well, I think most people here know about the basics of the movie. The timetravel plot is confirmed.

At the moment there are imo just two possible leads from the NCC-1701 site.

1. The patterns with the slider. I played with them in Photoshop, but didn't get anything special.

If someone else would like to try, here they are:

2. The numers for getting 100% signal strength.
CAM 1: 564, CAM 2: 125, CAM 3: 955, CAM 4: 289

But if they mean something, I have no idea what.

EDIT: Someone was faster^

Since the movie seems to be based on the original Star Trek TV show from the 60s, this article should narrow the focus down to the proper scope: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series

Don't forget, some of the plot involves present day (TNG Timeline) Spock going back in time to stop Romulans from screwing with the timeline. So you might need a bit of the Original Crew movies and TNG backstory, too.

Also, "The Menagerie" provides a little bit of character back story to the new movie. And I haven't trekked (sorry, couldn't resist) all the way through this thread, but the Star Trek Wiki, Memory Alpha, might be helpful as well: http://memory-alpha.org/

It is extremely thorough and detailed though, so the generic Wikipedia might be better if all you're looking for is a basic overview. (I know not everyone is interested in the minutiae of Vulcan anatomy or background information about tribbles...)

Although there doesn't seem to be any new "leads" from this, it definitely helps to solidify the theory that this is a prequel. The "Under Construction" theme with the text at the end of the teaser trailer and on the movies main page that lead us all to this game. The "SHIPYARD" text on the NCC-1701 page, as well as movies of something under construction. Another hint that this may be a prequel, is the fact that IMDB and the Star Trek (Movie) Wiki both talk about how William Shatner was not asked to be in the movie because he was too old, and they needed a younger Capitan Kirk.

...I thought that all of the interviews talking about how this movie was a prequel about the crew during their time in the Academy and the casting of young actors to play the young crew was a tip-off that this was a prequel. Wink

In the January issue of Sci-Fi Magazine (the one with Quinto on the cover anyways), the creators talked about how in canon, Kirk is dead, and THAT'S why Shatner isn't in it.

Scans of the Article
TrekMovie.com write-up

Co-Writer Robert Orci: "Unfortunately, Shatner's Captain Kirk was killed in Star Trek 7, so the difficulty there is not just ignoring that or explaining it away in an unsatisfactory way merely to get him back in. That is the struggle–the rigors of canon and not phoning it in just to have a cameo. From my point of view, it's a very long shoot, and things can change. It's just whether we can figure it out."

It was an interesting article on the whole, especially when they talked about how the creators are big fans and were so concerned about sticking to canon and maintaining the overall feel of the series.

Uhm, I like Star Trek (but I'm now more TNG/DS9/VOY and less TOS), been to 2 conventions (and dressed up in one of them as a Trill), have all the DVDs (except the last season of Enterprise b/c it is still too expensive), have some ST Crew gifts/plaques from production of the series, hubby has models and Hallmark ornaments *and* I have kissed a girl. Laughing So, am I a Trekker or Trekkie?

I've never kissed a girl, but I have kissed a gay man, is that good enough?

Uhm, we were there for the pre-opening special party (was on the ride for the first time at 2am that morning). Have taken visiting family & friends through it a few times. Done the original shuttle ride about 5 times, the Borg ride only 1. Love the museum part. Eaten at Quarks about 5 times.

Cool. I was only able to squeeze it in on a trip once several years back and do the original ride. I've been back in LV many times since (New Years Eve being the last) but haven't had any takers in going back to check out the Borg.

If you've been laid then you are none of the above.

If not... a treksmaster.

We always said

A Trekkie is a fan of the original series
A Trekker is a fan of the next generation

hence the long running joke

A trekker wonders what sex is like in zero gravity
Whilst a trekkie wonders what sex is like
