(Spec) Debunking second/smaller monster with Hud. (spoiler)
Did some math and an experiment (yes bored)

I have seen this discussed and debated in various capacities with the theory of two monsters and or a smaller one at the end of the movie eating Hud. I did a search but I didnt see any numbers or a real compelling argument either way other then what people thought they saw. Sorry if its trout but I DID search. Remember people, I did this in the name of science to settle some debate. Love me or hate me for it.

The going theory seems to be that the monster is 500 to 600 feet tall. Here is my hypothesis and math based on that which I think confims this to be accurate and support there is in fact only 1 monster AND the end monster scale being true to that.

If Hud is 6 ft tall that means he is approximately 1% the height of the monster (standing). Now lets scale that down to people size.

The Grape: If you took a 6 foot tall person (anatomical differences from MPG aside) and had them crawling on thier knees to eat something off the ground, that item would be 3/4 of an inch in size. That is like eating a grape which is big enough to notice as food to a hungry predator and can easily be picked up with just your mouth (yes I tried it). Hud was easily that small to MPGs definitely oversized mouth. Since MPG has a predators cutting teeth and no lips to keep things in its easy to see why Hud wasnt all crushed up and intact pieces could fall to the ground after just a couple of chews.

I then took one of my sons toy trucks scale to what would be driven by a 3/4 ro 1 inch person and it was easily under my hand and I dont have oversized MGP hands.

I think the movies makers got it exactly right at the end with the scale. I believe it is all just the angle of the camera throwing people off.

I agree. There's only one monster and it's perfectly scaled right. This is just an awkward looking beast and seeing it from below (worm's eye perspective) makes it look even odder.

I agree! I have also been tossing around the idea of the camera being zoomed or having an autozoom/focus feature that made MGP appear closer than he was.

The "going theory" is that it's only about 300' high, half the height you are suggesting.

Because of the monster's design, it's clear that it might be 600' LONG, but it doesn't stand upright and crawls on four legs, so to speak.

OK so 2 grapes, which I actually think makes it an even better argument for 1 monster.

I agree that there is only one monster and I think it's obvious if you watch the movie with the intention of thinking about how high the head of the monster is. I flipped through a bootleg (yeah, booo I know) and as they're running to the copters with the monster behind them hud turns around as the monster turns a corner and it is very obvious that head is not 25 stories high. I believe the monster is 25 stories tall when standing on it's hind legs like it is when it's walking towards beth's apartment (only seen the movie once, I think it was on its hind legs). Anyways, I agree completely with your analysis.

I think the human vs grape analogy of scale accounts for this by the suggestion of crawling on the ground. I don't think a vertical stack of 100 grapes would be needed to go from the floor to a crawling person's mouth. The ad that says MGP is 25 stories tall or roughly 250 feet as he moves in quadrapedal form roughly supports your suggestion of walking height, and would seem to match Richie's analogy of scale. What's interesting to me is that MGP's height standing would not include his tail, which is fairly clearly longer than his hind limbs. This means 'fingertip' to tail's end, MGP could approach 1000'. That's freaking long!

I gotta give you credit. I have been immersed in this question as well. You have made a strong argument here and I applaud your efforts! This satisfies my curiousity on this subject, thanks.

Thanks Emp. I was actually leaning towards the possibilitly of 2 monsters before I decided to math it out and quickly saw (in my opinion) that it was just one, and well done at that.

Theres an interview made recently with JJ or Reeves or someone from the movie that says there is no height discrepency, that its camera angles that make it seem so different in height, and if i do recall properly, u can see the camera auto focusing as the monster is looking around

Agreed, I think they also made a reference in the movie to there being only one monster. Something like "Whatever IT is IT's winning." But I like how you worked it all out Richie. Great job!

I did the same thing using a nipple attached to a 6 foot blonde woman and got a different result. There was however alot of screaming.
