Wrong. The production notes state that it is the monster's tail.

Gotta say, by all accounts it was a tail. And the prod notes are up at www.cloverfieldclues.com, the unabridged ones even.

if you see the full scene at the end of the tail/arm/whatever, there is some sort of webbed hand/fin
