Mr. moose162:

I also would like to be made aware of the source of such information.

Quote:
To prevent the leaking of plot information, instead of auditioning the actors with scenes from the film, scripts from Abrams's previous productions were used, such as television series Alias and Lost. Some scenes were also written specifically for the audition process, not intended for use in the film. Despite not being told the premise of the film, Lizzy Caplan stated that she accepted a role in Cloverfield solely because she was a fan of the Abrams-produced television series Lost, and her experience of discovering its true nature initially caused her to state that she would not sign on for a film in the future "without knowing full well what it is." She indicated that her character was a sarcastic outsider, and that her role was "physically demanding."

Quote:
"Well, we weren't exactly clear about the characters we were playing when we signed on. The producers sat us down and we auditioned with scenes that aren't in the movie. Some were from Alias and some had been written specifically for the audition. And they were all very misleading."

Um....so where does it say that she didn't like her character?

I think your misinterpreting.

i think they are msinterpreting as well, she said misleading meaning that they have nothing to do with how she is supposed to act in the cloverfield she meant like it had nothing at all to do with anything like it.
when i say they and it i am referring to the auditioning skits

Yea. Thats definitely not what she meant by that. This role is in a long line of characters of hers whose traits are very similar. For her to say she didn't like Marlena would almost be like saying she hasn't liked any of her characters. I get the impression from interviews and such, that the characters she plays are not far-fetched from reality.

Just thought I'd show you guys these quotes in addition:

Quote:
During the first few weeks, it was like, "Oh god, this is what we're doing?"

And she does like to play characters with Marlena's traits but see below.
Quote:
Right now, I'm just more interested in playing the sarcastic third-lead than some boring ingénue. That said, I don't think I can do all that many more of these without getting really tired of it.

I suppose I shouldn't have said she disliked Marlena but that she was hoping for someone else.

I really don't think those roles that she gets are far from herself in real life.
In some interview with the entire cast she seemed really sarcastic and was actually pretty funny.

Even more reasons why she's attractive. LAWL.

I agree that her statements are being misinterpreted. First off most of the actors have said they were a bit leery when they first signed on and found out it was a monster movie. Mike Vogel said it and the others have implied it as well. It took them a few weeks before they really got a feel for what they were doing.

Lizzy in particular has also said she much prefers playing the sarcastic third lead or so than playing the regular female lead.

So yeah, as for the scenes being misleading that is in reference to the audition scenes. It was said they were given a Cameron Crowe type party scene and some scene from Alias and then were asked to guess what kind of movie they thought it was.

If anything it seems the actors have been upfront about the fact that they liked this film and thought it was well done, but that's just me.

being behind the screen before she exploded was not meant to drive curiosity. it was meant to not be too explicit and i think it was good that way.
i didn't want to see her explode and it would be too gory.

it isnt supposed to be a gore flick. its a monster flick.
focus on monsters that kill. not gory deaths that happen to hurt people.

the shock value is from the blood spatter on the screen.

I totally agree with you. If they went any further than the blood splattering on the screen it would have lessened the shock value somewhat. I, for one, like alot of other people liked Marlena. It would have made her death less meaningful to me if they made it a gory death just to make it gory and 'scary'. It disturbed me with how they did her death. I mean tons of gore doesn't bother me one bit. I love it, but it would make it unrealistic to me if they took it further.
I've seen the movie 4 times and each time I get a bit erked when she 'explodes'.

Did anyone else notice after Hud said the comment about a flaming homeless guy Marlena turned to him and made this 'yea that would be kinda freaky\scary' kinda face at him ? I loved how they start to make her a character and then kill her off randomly. I hate that she died though.

As for Lizzy Caplan and her comments about her character, I mean, who wouldn't be mad if they were 'misled' into what kind of movie and character they actually would be playing. I would think she took in consideration as to why they did this though. In the end, they liked how the movie turned out.

Uh...did anyone catch what Marlena said to Hud shortly after she was bitten?

I forget what he says, but she laughs a bit and then says something...I'm fairly convinced she said "My stomach..." (she was chuckling at the time), after which Hud says "It's okay. You got bit." and a few other things.

here's the dialogue (loosely)

HUD: hey...hey...those things came out of nowhere right?
MARLENA: yeah
HUD:oh man....one of them grabbed me...it was trying to drag me away...what was up with that
MARLENA: maybe it like you hud...
HUD: yeah...maybe it was trying to make me its queen

HUD: hey...um...thanks for coming back and...helping me out...you know?
MARLENA: what you think I'm the kinda person that wouldn't do that?
HUD: no...no...I know you aren't...I'm just really...glad you did...otherwise I would've been totally dead

then i can't really make out what marlena is saying...but if I was a lip reader I would say it does look like she says my stomach...but i'm not a lip reader...

and then yeah...Hud says...its ok...you just got bit
