[SPEC]

What are the names of all the robots that appear in the articles around the puzzle? http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=2217406219&size=l

And can we use their names as a key somehow?

We have 6 robots. top left, top centre, top right, bottom left, bottom centre, bottom right (okay, this one extends up a bit, but whatever).

The names I've been able to figure out:

TL: Flaming Moe
TC: Robosapien
TR: ??? arabicbot?
BL: ??? orchestra robots 1 through 3?
BC: ??? dutchbot?
BR: Louise

It may not get anywhere, but I feel that they chose these particular artcles for -some- reason, right?

They all had to do with robots? Just a guess =D

I agree, though. It could definitely be something. I'm curious to know what the foreign articles are about.

Re: [SPEC]

Found a few things.

TR robot is a Technion robot from Israel.
BR robot is called Louie, not Louise.
BL orchestra I couldn't find details on, but here's a bigger version of the picture here.

Well, here i am again, not really following the story or playing the ARG, but I cannot resist a puzzle that sits around unsolved for more than a page or two. :D

I've posted the solutions in IRC, and i'll paste them here, then i'll do my best to explain how i got there.

Code:
22 13 22 31 00 11 14 11 30 00 01 22 41 33 22
21 20 03 12 01 04 43 13 30 42 41 10 03 01 43
12 03 01 10 20 11 55 11 55 55 30 10 32 33 10
00 33 10 20 00 31 11 32 14 13 10 11 33 00 04
10 01 44 32 10 00 12 33 04 01 43 03 12 31 21
13 10 22 33 00 34 00 55 30 21 00 20 33 34 02
12 34 14 44 55 02 44 11 21 01 20 22 31 03 43
02 20 41 21 43 43 30 55 55 01 23 10 33 21 01
03 14 03 13 04 23 14 41 40 04 42 41 22 00 32
01 03 43 02 34 20 14 24 31 14 14 22 33 42 22
00 44 14 03 14
paired with the lyrics to "Welcome to the Machine" becomes:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
THE RESISTANCE DEVICE IS BENEATH
THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND AT THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES
THIRTY POINT FOUR SEVEN FOUR TWO EIGHT ONE
MINUS NINETY SEVEN POINT NINE EIGHT FIVE FOUR TWO EIGHT

Code:
13 10 44 24 32 13 22 41 04 34 13 42 32 24 11
12 01 04 22 31 02 24 11 12 12 40 32 32 33 31
13 20 24 44 04 13 20 12 04 22 01 13 20 13 12
44 04 44 23 12 04 10 33 30 23 44 24 11 00 33
31 40 14 31 00 00 11 12 42 30 13 20 55 55 33
12 11 22 33 55 33 41 02 13 21 41 24 12 10 11
00 41 55 14 31 34 14 34 33 31 30 02 12 40 02
21 24 23 44 03 34 14 42 12 03 34 20 33 20 00
30 01 34 00 11 32 01 42 33 21 30 01 43 21 30
40 10 21 44 01 44 04 00 13 02 21 10 14 10 40
32 12 10 55 24 12 10
paired with the lyrics to "Wish You Were Here" becomes:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
THE RESISTANCE DEVICE IS BENEATH
THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND AT THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES
TWENTY EIGHT POINT SIX EIGHT THREE FOUR FOUR FIVE
MINUS EIGHTY ONE POINT THREE NINE SIX SIX ZERO FOUR

(Here you need to take the opening line to be "So you think you can tell", not "So, so you think you can tell" as many lyric sheets correctly transcribe from the song as performed.)

For both, use the following grid to substitute number pairs for letters:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
x 0 1 2 3 4 5
0 S B Z O G .
1 V E i L M .
2 W X P D F .
3 R T Y H K .
4 N A Q U C .
5 . . . . . J

for example 31=T and 24=F
(this would look so much nicer in a CODE tag instead of a spoiler...)
Then, use the song lyric as a Vignere key, just as you did with the first two punchcard codes. The way I derived that grid was to backsolve from the assumption that both messages begin with that key phrase, "The resistance device is..." -- lots of back and forth, trial and error, to fill in the gaps after running with known values.

I heartily recommend http://sharkysoft.com/misc/vigenere/ as a tool, plus I use an Excel spreadsheet to hold all the values and lookup tables.

Bloody hell! Damn nice work there, Catherwood! Well done to you and all the guys on IRC! Very Happy

More specifically, it looks like one is north east of Austin, Texas (Somewhere called Lago Vista), and the second is in Sanlando Park, Orlando (Just west of I4).

Go get 'em, guys!

Edit: It's mid-afternoon in Texas, and early evening in Florida. We might even be able to get these today if people are paying attention to these forums...

Nice, catherwood! So you're saying the the numbers are simple substitution, however you worked backwards by assuming THE RESISTANCE DEVICE, encrypting with the lyrics, and finding that the resulting encrypted text matched the number patterns for either set?

Now I really wonder what the significance is of that letter grid... might be insignificant now that the puzzle is solved, but it's just one of those unanswered questions that's going to eat at me (unless of course the letters were in fact chosen entirely randomly)

Just to be clear: is anybody going after the thermoses at the moment? Please post, so we don't have multiple people wasting time.

Just a thought - If someone does go after one of these and finds the canister, it might be an idea to crack it open and take a picture facing north. That's assuming there aren't any extra instructions in the package. Might save you a trip back to the pickup location.

Hi

I havent been playing this at all, have no clue what's going on but got a message asking if I could maybe help check up on the Austin one. I wouldn't mind at all, so if nobody else is going after it and you need an extra hand, camera, etc. just send me instructions and I will get on it. I'm not in Austin specifically but close enough it's feasible to check out.

Just let me know if I can be of service, when, where, how, what ya need me to do...not a problem. Oh and what *not* to do so I wouldn't unwittingly screw it up! Just IM me or pop me an email.

EDIT:

If anyone can get back to me pretty quick I can probably go tomorrow afternoon and report back tomorrow evening or when we get back, if timing is a factor here. And if anyone is up for providing me with a cell #, I can give you mine and you can walk me through it - which might come in handy since I have no idea what's what in this game!

I'm in the Orlando area and I spent about an hour looking for the canister in this area at about 7pm EST and was not able to find it. I will try to make it out to that area after work to see if I can find it, assuming no one else has. I live about 15 mins from that site.

Actually! It turns out that I have a friend that lives like, a couple of miles from that spot! He might be able to go dig it up for me tomorrow afternoon if you dont want to have to drive a long ways.

Are we 100% on the spots in those pics being accurate?
