According to cnn.com -

Quote:
At the time of his death, Ledger had just finished playing the villain The Joker in "The Dark Knight," the latest installment in the Batman series. The film is to open in July.

The role disturbed him, according to The Associated Press. He called The Joker a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy."

"Last week, I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger told The New York Times. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."

He said prescription sleeping pills didn't help, according to AP.

"It was a very great challenge for Heath," director Christopher Nolan told AP. "He's extremely original, extremely frightening, tremendously edgy. A very young character, a very anarchic presence that taps into a lot of our basic fears and panic."

If TDK was supposed to end with the death of The Joker...well, that's probably a thing they'll have to think long and hard about, huh? Because they can edit, but they can't re-shoot. Crazy.

RIP

I just hope they don't replace him with another actor half way through if they do end up reshooting...

more related news directed towards the campaign:

via Wired blog
Quote:
The Joker ads may be scrapped for the Batman prequel/sequel The Dark Knight. So far the majority of DK marketing has been focused on Heath Ledger's character, but since his untimely death earlier this week Warner Bros. has had to reassess their marketing plan.

The first step the studio has taken is adding a black ribbon to the opening page of Why So Serious.

You can expect to see a lot less clown make-up as the WB gears up for the July release of what may be Ledger's last movie.

I'm curious to see how this will affect any viral marketing plans by alternative reality game company 42Entertainment, who had already launched several games focused on the grinning villain.

and the latest movie poster (afaik):

Shouldn't have to worry about that - Heath was quoted as saying all his post-production work on TDK had been completed in order to free him up for the Terry Gilliam movie.

It's just going to be a matter of the marketing I think, and being sensitive to his passing.

The black ribbon on WSS makes me sad...

TheBruce,

To be exceedlingly clear, that's not a WB poster, it's fan-made. WIRED's fact-check department definitely dropped the ball on this one.

really? ugh. Well thanks for making that clear... it's not bad. But not official just drops it on the respect-o-meter.

My respect-o-meter is still high for that poster. It looks AWESOME!

I don't think The Joker dies at the end of TDK. I heard that he had already signed on to be in the next one.
