What I found kinda stupid 'bout WotWz was the way the aliens came down in lightning blasts or whatever. I thought that was creative, but sometimes creative isn't the way to go, no matter what your elementary school teachers told you. If they had either stuck to the novel, or found some other way of having them come out of the ground (falling into the ocean and burrowing underground, then coming up in the middle of many cities simultaneously would have been much cooler) it would've been better.

I don't get what you mean by "the other things, unless VERY well done (see Jurrasic Park)." Do you mean the practical effects in that movie?

I agree with everything else you say, and I agree that CGI was really the only option, but, as you said, "now-a-days, theres no reason it shouldnt look believable" and it was just average (which isn't very good) CGI.

Yea, as neat as the idea was... they should have had the tripods come out of the sky like meteors... thats how it was supposed to happen.

To your second comment, yea, I was saying using physical things like puppets or claymation would absolutely kill the mood of this movie. Personally, I thought the CGI looked believable. Its very hard to add CGI into shaky-cam type shots.

Hmm... you're missin out on some good stuff man...

I was going to London that week, so I went into a phone box and looked up Harryhausen R. oddly, there was only one.
My tutor phoned him and a month later the man arrived with a large box and a reel (16mm in those days) of clips.
He stayed for hours and we had a few beers in the student union bar.
What a gent...

There are some of us who are still working on the ARE/ARG of this movie. There are still some who believe there will be a real ARG ramping up to the Sequel and or Manga.

In closing, "IF I HAVE TO STOMACH ONE MORE GODZILLA OR LOST REFERENCE I AM GOING TO F-ING PUKE."

Thanks!

Man, that is great! I have never before respected someone more than myself, but that has just changed!

And as to the whole "using physical things like puppets or claymation would absolutely kill the mood of this movie." ...........WHAT?!?!? No offense, but that is the single most ludicrous thing I have ever heard (and I live on a planet where people say some ludicrous-ass shit on a regular basis!). A physical object that moves like a living creature is the closest you can get to the real thing. Assuming it is of high enough quality, of course.

Oh, wait.....I think you mean like stop motion. I meant like robots and such. Am I reading you right?

I meant it would be VERY difficult to get an anamatronic or anything like that to work well with this movie, except for possibly the parasites.

Reasons why:

1) The monster is too freaking big to use anamatronics. The one advantage animatronics have over CGI is that the lighting on them is perfect because they are actually there. How are you gonna get an anamatronic THAT BIG in the scene? If they did use an model of some sort for the movie, they would have to film it, and then add it in with a computer, and that would really look strange unless they worked some miracles. Also... need I mention how much that would COST?

2) Claymation would be impossible to achieve the fluid movements needed. Plus they would have to add it in using computers again anyways...

Basicly, with the point of view the movie is filmed in, combined with the gigantic size of the creature, and the style of filming this movie was done in... CGI is the best option for giving it a realistic feel.

*EDIT* And thanks for the compliment. Very Happy

I get you, and I agree with what you are saying; it would be too expensive/impossible to build a robot or anything like that. I just went back to one of your earlier posts and realized that I had read it wrong.

Basically, if practical effects are, well, practical, then they are the best option. In a case like this, yes, CGI is the best option. I don't like the way you say "CGI is the best option for giving it a realistic feel" though, simply because my problem with CGI is that it almost never gives a realistic feel. The CGI in King Kong totally ruined it for me. I really liked it up until the dinosaurs showed up (best section of the original), then totally lost interest (and I love dinosaurs).

Godzilla

Whose YOUR favorite monster? My personal favortie is Godzilla, I loved MGP but I have to see it more, because I didn't see it perfectly, but it may be my favorite, it depends how it exactly looks, and it also needs at least one awesome power to be my favorite, thats one thing I love about monsters, their powers, mostly fire.

Watch Transformers. Nuff said.

Sorry if this is a repost, but it didn't go through before.
I know a lot of people hated it, but I really liked the monster design, and movie in the new Godzilla. I know people bashed it for having no plot, character development, theme, etc, etc, but I went to see a giant lizard and GD it I saw a giant lizard.
Deep Star Six monster would have to be my favorite. That movie creeped me out when I was 12.

Actually, I think fire is more of a stereotype (like superheroes wearing capes...think about how many more don't than do). The only monsters I can think of that breathe fire are dragons (usually) and maybe Baragon (if you call that fire).

My fave would probably be Godzilla, or maybe King Ghidorah (although his threat level has diminished dramatically since his original appearance). I was initially disappointed in the design for MGP, but with time I have come to accept and approve of it.

Re: Godzilla

My favorite thing about MGP is that he looks like (size aside) he could actually exist... As far as we know, he doesnt have radioactive super powers or anything. Hes just a bigass creature who woke up and is now being shot at, and doesnt like it.

Which Godzilla are you referring to?

Oh, and I had forgotten all about Deep Star Six. I don't remember the monster too well, other than a big sideways mouth (I think...?).

I'd like to add the Xenomorphs from the first two Alien movies. In the later ones, not only did the quality of the film decrease, but so did the quality of both the design and movement of the Xenos.

I absolutely agree. I was afraid that MGP's lack of offensive abilities would make him not much of a threat (a la GINO), but I was proven wrong. If a realistic reason for a monster to have powers were thought up, it would be cooler, but, until then, no powers is definitely more realistic.

I have to say, I agree with the other guy in that I much prefered the design of GINO. It looked so much more NATURAL than the dude in a rubber suit.

In my opinion, the only Godzilla design that looks natural is the one in the original movie. GINO, while perhaps more realistic in design overall, consisted of terrible effects and was in an equally terrible movie. The head and anthropomorphic arms were my only complains design-wise. If it weren't for that huge jaw, I wouldn't really have any problems with the design, but it just looks absurdly stupid.

If by "natural," you mean "realistic", as in, "GINO looked more realistic than Godzilla," then it depends on which Godzilla movie you are watching; sometimes that's true, sometimes it's not.

Well, I gotta go now, so I'll talk to you guys some other time.
