Barbara Tedlock, anyone?

Right, so I did a few google scholar searches for articles about mayan divination, and the same name kept popping up: Barbara Tedlock... so I went to the library and got out her book called 'Time and the Highland Maya'. Found this interesting illustration in it (link, so it doesn't stretch):

http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/patrick.liebgott/FollowTheHozhq/photo#5158021812356753266

Recognise it? It's the exact same drawings as on the divination page.

Observations:
- the last pile with 2 seeds are not in "follow the hozhq" - are these 'mssng'?
- There is a long discription (20 pages) of how the divination is performed, but I can't seem to get it to fit with the site. It includes 3 other 'rounds', with a different number of seeds/crystals, drawn differently in the book, which leads me to believe that there is something special about this illustration

[insert rallying cry of your choice here Wink]

edit: moved to this thread, and removed odd url at the end

Hozqh?

Kluckhohn identified hozhq as the central idea in Navajo religious thinking. But it is not something that occurs only in ritual song and prayer; it is referred to frequently in everyday speech. A Navajo uses this concept to express his happiness, health, the beauty of his land, and the harmony of his relations with others. It is used in reminding people to be careful and deliberate, and when he says good-bye to someone leaving, he will say hozhqqgo naninaa doo "may you walk or go about according to hozhq." (Witherspoon, 1977)

Hozhq encompasses the notions of connectedness, reciprocity, balance, and completeness that underpin con-textually oriented views of health and well-being (Stokols, 1991). Although the terms of reference vary, this orientation is commonly held across Indian and Native communities. The American Indian and Alaska Native experience may lead to the rediscovery of the fundamental aspects of psychological and social well-being and the mechanisms for their maintenance.

When putting this concept together with Heraclitus' philosophy, maybe follow the hozhq has to do with unity, balance, and completeness? Or mental health?

I spent quite a while tossing the rice and crystals yesterday trying to find a pattern. I noticed that when you toss them two pieces always go off of the board and you are left with one of two patterns: two rice and two crystals or three rice and one crystal. I was trying to figure out if there was a pattern when the divinition was successful, but could find one. Then I remember that we are supposed to be looking for what is mssng. What is missing is the four rice pattern. I'm not sure if that means anything, but I thought I'd mention it.

I'm Nightbird from the CBS board and I've been following but not posting here. But I was sitting and doing the toss over and over the other night, watching patterns when they turn red. And I noticed that when the scatter pattern was the same the second throw was red. If the first one is red it matches the previous throw from the last divination. And only those with a red throw go to the glyph screen.

I was also watching patterns. Some repeated noticably. I'm not sure if there are set pattern or they vary within a programmed throw, but I'm trying to figure out how to record the pattern for comparison. Graphics deprived person here.

I kept looking for some kind of pattern in the throws, but still haven't found one. But it does look like the seeds/crystals fall within some kind of lines. Could these relate to the stars on the barcode? The shape of the divination area and the barcode are the same.

Just tossing out these ideas to see if you can make more of them. This game is so fascinating and look forward to each new clue. Where have these games been and why did I just discover them?

I don't have time to follow up on this, but has anyone tried filling in the names of the months that have i's in them? Or on glyphs with eyes?

In all seriousness, folks, I think this game may hinge on the follow the hozhq puzzle. I mean, let's think about it- we have two puzzles definitely unsolved at the moment. We can go back to point one, and we still have the bar code stars. No clue where they belong, or what they do. Secondly- we have FTH. I've begun decompiling every piece of flash we get of late, being as it sometimes offers hints, but has only once offered a true solution(the "red cloud" password for ajkin), so I don't feel that's cheating. In the FTH decompile, I found only one piece of info that in all honesty, we already knew. The boxes of text to the left and right of the field of play are listed in the flash as LeftHints_0 thru 4 and RightHints_0 thru 4. I think we already knew these should be used as hints... now, how?

unsolved puzzles

hmm, i still see a lot of speculation about the stars on the original sticker, but I feel like there's nothing more there... i always felt that the stars were simply meant to point people towards the Jericho connection to the ARG, as the numbers of black and white and big stars all seemed to mirror the Jericho post-attack geopolitical landscape. since i didn't read the ARG until after i knew it was from Jericho, the connection seemed very obvious to me...

trouble with that, mac, is that the CBS Tooman blog has poked us saying we don't yet know the significance or use for the stars. That implies we're missing something.
