From a Cryptozoology standpoint, none of these creatures, MGP or Parasites display very little on the amphibious line.

Vocal chords, breathing sacks, eyes, legs, tongue etc. Just a guess, but I think these guys used to be primarily on the land.

The very fact the parasites are air breathers and so is MGP makes them more whale or dolphin like how they use air.

I was thinking that the things on the head of MGP were related to his breathing. They expand and contract as if they were for breathing.

I could be wrong.

You are aware of crustaceans, right? And Garfield?

But seriously, the parasites could easily be amphibious. Not amphibEANS, but some sort of crab/sea louse/whatever sort of critter, where they can get by in either place.

MGP, on the other hand, doesn't really fit, as you've said. I'm thinkin' it's something like a monster lungfish, where it can get by on land, but will eventually return to the water. Or... maybe it's a made-up monster and can do whatever it wants?

Gee, now isn't that a thought.

Yeah... sometimes it seems like we're trying to leech a bit too much reality out of a movie about a giant monster.

In interviews about the monster, though, I think Reeves was the one who mentioned it, but Neville Page (MGP designer) always tries to keep his monsters somewhat practical, with usages and explanations for the things that they do. So I don't think analyzing this is that pointless.

Although I'm sure Neville Page doesn't know all there is to know about aquatic life.
