Re: Discussion.
This needs addressed, do not get defensive.

OGs to mid-players to newbs.

OK, as someone that this could reasonably be directed at (tho I don't think I mindlessly defend my ideas when things are proven wrong)... I just have one real question:

How are we supposed to be playing this? Should we gather information, clues, put the pieces together and then move on to the next thing? Or should we be analyzing and making guesses (theories)?

I think there has to be a combination of the two (because we have gotten good information from these guesses at points), but want to know what the group thinks the answer is.

I'll be honest, you have had a few, yes, but this wasn't directed at you as much as a few other players.

There is no real answer in how to play this my dear, analyzing is one thing but this group tends to excessively over analyze everything. You can post a theory/guess as you're posting information, but Jesus Christ, make sure it's in the realm of possibility. (This was not directed at you, I'm meaning you as a collective.)

I'm going to list an example of a very bad theory and bringing information out of left field. I do apologize if this upsets the person or she feels like she's been singled out, but without examples people won't understand.

Tresbien posted; `` I thought it could be a play on words on the old song "Brother, (Buddy) Can You Spare A Dime? And it also reminded me of foreclosure of a dream.

"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime," lyrics by Yip Harburg, music by Jay Gorney (1931)

They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob,
When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;
Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime? ``

This is not only out of left field, but a wasted post and I thank fate that everyone ignored it.

There is no such thing as wasted spec. Anyone who doesn't have inside information cannot claim to know better than anyone else which spec is "better" than which.

I understand the frustration here with the topic drift. Personally, I cannot fathom the need for a thread about saying goodnight. This is a forum, not a chat room. But the community supports it by keeping the thread alive; if people stopped posting to the thread, it would eventually drift to the bottom and be more easily ignored.

There's no need to single out people or try to categorize types of posts as "good" or "bad." Everyone is welcome to participate here and we do not particularly care to dictate how they do so beyond what is laid out in the Terms of Service. The only way to encourage more constructive participation is to just participate more constructively and ignore the rest.

I agree, but when the majority of someone's posts are left field thoughts than actual help it tends to irritate and hinder progress. Understood, though.

Most of the time it's hard to recognize beforehand what is important and what isn't. Since we have no foreknowledge, this makes everything important and the more the better.

Everything will continue as follows.

I just beg that things stay in the right thread, it's a lot easier for everyone that way, especially future players Very Happy

The following is a list of topics that are in the way:

[48][Trailhead] Bones
[48][REF]Now that things seemed to have calmed down a bit. (Can be compiled with Forum Overhaul and Directions.)
[48][REF] Chat with ICON. (Now that everyone has read it, it holds no baring in the game.)
48[OT]Chat
[48][EVENT] Promoting Time (Everything has changed since this, doesn't need to be here.)
[48] 48 Hours in Purgatory YouTube video (Old, doesn't need to be here.)

If all of this was gone and we kept all of the other topics in order, this forum would be much easier to navigate.

Many of these topics have already settled to the bottom of the forum, as they should, so I don't see a real need to "compile" them. Threads can't be merged here, btw, although they can be locked. But again, if they're not really active and/or causing trouble, there's no need. From what I've seen, 'round these parts threads are only locked as a way to stop troll riots and flame wars.

IMHO, it would help a lot if people started putting SPEC in their post titles, or in the body of the post whenever the SPEC bug bites.

'Eh, I'm beginning to feel all of my efforts are in vain, so it really doesn't matter at this point.

Aw, cheer up, young squire. You're doing a good job. Brownie

I was going to edit my post and then point out the usefulness of editing as opposed to double-posting, but Icky got in there ahead of me, so oh well. It's still a good point though.

I just refreshed the forum page and scrolled down just past the stickies, and I count FOUR OT threads on my screen, not counting this one. Seriously, that's too many. There are so many ACTIVE, IG threads to keep track of (more than I'm comfortable with, but that seems to be the nature of this game) that every extraneous thread makes it that much harder to play, and not in a good way.

To reiterate and condense part of what Icarus said, for emphasis: THINK BEFORE YOU POST. This will get you many more friends than non-friends here, and many brownies as well. Very Happy And you will have much less of this. Catfight!

Just to add my thoughts on this matter:

Ic has a valid and reasonable point, none of those threads are necessary, and none of them hold any standing within the game. I agree that they should either be amalgamated or removed.

We all have some sort of a messaging client, I myself have several. There's MSN, AIM, YIM, GoogleChat, ICQ, meebo etc, etc, etc. I see know reason why people cannot discuss things there, if that's not the case then I vote for someone to set up a chat client for people to converse in if they still feel the need.
I myself am guilty of posting in these various threads, but i'm more than happy to get rid of them, this forum is crowded enough without the extra clutter and distraction of "chatty" threads.

As I said, just my thoughts Wink

I couldn't agree more, Tiggs. Unfiction already has a Java chat client accessible from the homepage for those who don't have an IRC client. It puts you in the #unfiction channel, but it wouldn't be any trouble to set up a channel for 48hrs.

We should set that up so we can get rid of all off topic threads, except for ones involving important issues. I.e. this one. Everything could go except I think the Introductions should stay so we know each other. However, stay with introductions and welcomes. Don't use that as a chat topic.

SpaceBass said it best, this is a forum, not a chatroom. I've been trying to abolish The Lounge and everything off topic since the 48 forum.

'Tis done. Channel #48hrs is open.

For help getting started with chat, IRC and whatnot, see this sticky thread: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14144

For further help with the Java client, there are 2 Announcement sticky threads at the top of the News & Rumors section, here (http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22055) and here (http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3829).
