"Monster"

Awhile ago a movie called "Monster" came out, and it was much the same genre as Cloverfield. It was all done with a hand-cam (supposedly) and featured a monster's attack on a city as experienced by two teenage girls. It was less realistic in that no two people seemed to be reacting to the same thing (when the ground shakes, rather than having the camera shake or all the characters lurch simultaneously, there's just a sound effect and someone says "the ground's shaking"). I don't think it was related to Cloverfield in-game; the monster either lived underground and was just poking up, flailing and pulling back, or else its whole body was a giant tentacle. The whole thing just flat-out sucked and I am depressed to have watched it. To it's credit, there is one aspect of it that is actually more realistic than Cloverfield: the two girls in the movie are panicking the whole time, repeating themselves constantly, making stupid decisions, being unbearably annoying... all the things college-age people really do when they're terrified. Only problem is they made that part a little too realistic, and the rest of the movie... there are obviously CGI sections where the tentacle is coming up, flailing and knocking stuff over, but in any scene where human beings are involved, there is no damage to the city and none of the extras are aware that anything is going wrong.

What I'm wondering is, did this movie influence Abrams in any way? I know he got an idea from Godzilla, but seeing this movie (which is not a rip-off; it was made before Cloverfield) I have to think that there had to have been a connection. It's like if someone sat down, watched "Monster" on dvd, and said "Hey, I've got an idea! Let's do this, except make it good!"

It was merely released before Cloverfield. The Asylum obvioulsy liked what they were hearing about it and rushed their production to slap on DVD before Cloverfield when the marketing started heating up. So, Monster actually is a rip-off of Cloverfield. Same as Snakes On A Train, I Am Omega, Alien Vs. Hunter etc. are to their respective Hollywood counterparts.

Straight out of wikipedia:

Wikipedia wrote:
"MONSTER" - A monster movie which deals with the attack of a giant tentacled creature on Japan. Told from the perspective of a handheld camera, the movie is to be released on 1-15-08, only 3 days before Cloverfield hits theatres. It should be noted that this film is just a bad version of Cloverfield, & any one that is thinking about seeing it is only going to wast their time.

Additionally, ASYLUM started production shortly after all of the speculation came out from the original TEASER. Most of the best speculation was being produced right here on UF which included, hand held camera POV, origin speculation, why and how?, alien or deep sea. All of that was forged on UF. Very few other sites were doing as much work as UF except Dennis.

ASYLUM usually spends about 3 to 6 months filming, editing and burning it for DVD release. It is rumored they scour IMDB PRO for ideas. What does that tell you.

If anything, JJ got his biggest idea and influence from the stir SMOKY created when it made its debut on the pilot.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
quite terribly, half assed ending. one of the girls was struck by a tentacle, the other finds her, then screams, scrambled tape, then ending. The funniest part was how it said they were never seen again, yet the footage was leaked online by there father.

I don't think it's in store, but I'm pretty sure you can order it from their site:
