And So It Begins...

Imagine, if you will, being a brilliant documentary filmmaker with loads of ideas and a team of dedicated partners but few funds. You have gained a moderate following behind the strength of a dozen documentaries since 1999 released under the SKG (Skeleton Key Global) Films label, one you created yourself. Now imagine coming up with an idea so interesting, so macabre, and so obsessive that nothing could stop you from filming and releasing it. Stretch your mental image now to encompass being in love with your partner at SKG, but not being able to tell her. You are imagining yourself as Brody Hawkins and this is where our story begins.

Brody, along with 3 trustworthy friends (Veronique, Arkham and Jagt), set out on a crusade to create 48 Hours in Purgatory: a documentary about subjects being locked in a room for 48 hours and forced to face their demons for ten thousand dollars. Originally Veronique's pet idea, things did not go exactly as planned however.

As the end of August 2007 approached, the 4 members of SKG began taking applications for participants. Filming began soon thereafter, but not without a number of interesting things occurring. During the filming of the first subject, and while a thunderstorm was raging outside, the subject, a college professor claimed a ghost was in the room with him. The camera catches a chair seemingly moving on its own, though no evidence was ever able to explain why. The professor remarked that it was not the first time his nighmares had come to life. Brody continues to interview potential subjects (one who we would eventually find out looks like Veronique with massive tattoos) until Sept. 19th. We have come to find out that Brody's feelings for Veronique (V) were reciprocated, and she asked out to a movie. On this night, Brody had resolved, without even having "dated" V once, that he would propose. He had bought the ring 6 months prior, but his sister Laney had died that day, and he felt the ring was cursed. Well, they get into car accident on their way to the movie…V dies on the scene. Details about Brody's state were unclear, except to say that he was on meds, in the hospital for a few days, and his blog (which we could read at that time, but no longer) was fraught with inconsistencies. Brody, 3 days later, drives to Boston to throw the ring into Boston Harbor and say farewell to his love.

Deciding to memorialize Ronnie (yet another nickname for Veronique) Brody dives back into his work, immersing himself with reckless abandon. It seems he is losing a grip on reality as he thinks he sees V at various places. He even calls his cell to check his messages while out of town and thinks V picks up. Issues with Brody's story appear. For instance, while in the hospital, Brody remembers a nurse telling him she was "flown out" (her body flown home) the day after, which is very quick turnaround time. Also, in November, Connie met V at a coffee shop in Canada. These inconsistencies, along with what follows have lead many to question whether or not V actually died, and a multitude of theories have been posited attempting to explain how she died, yet was alive.

October dawned on Brody, he found V's notebook, in which she had written various marketing ideas for the film, and various laments that Brody never made a move on her. He begins to rekindle what he had momentarily forgotten about loving her. By mid-October Brody had finished filming 2 other participants, mentioning he gave one of them (Apple Sauce Guy) a gun and he pulled the trigger.

As November arrived, Brody, like all people in his position would have, was having good days and bad, and he had finished filming 2 other subjects. He was ecstatic to film the final subject, the one who looked like V. At this point Malice, a rather large Black man, is introduced to the story. It seems that he was muscle for this last subject, though his ties to Brody (other than the fact that they had worked together in the past) remain sketchy. By the 15th of Nov. Brody is strongly considering a guerilla marketing campaign to promote this film when it is finished, a task we were at one time going to make our own at Brody's request. Filming finished.

When the film went into post-production, we lost almost all ties to him. His blog was made private, he no longer answered e-mails, and he rarely if ever talked to Idta (Connie) on AOL IM.
It was within a week of his "disappearance" that a new force appeared. With Brody gone, Jagt had begun his OWN re-cut of 48 claiming that the "truth" needed to be outed. The CATCH is that Jagt is doing this from 2 years in the future after 48 and Brody had won numerous awards, though we could somehow read his blog. Apparently, and for reasons we do not yet know, Jagt's conscience was gnawing away at his sanity and he hoped the re-cut would put his mind at ease. At present, his website simply has a trailer for his version of the film.

Currently, Brody's whereabouts remain unknown, although rumors have surfaced that he went to England and Ireland for a time. Via Facebook, MySpace, and e-mail Brody has also mentioned going to visit Heather (The Mirror) in Minnesota. Our last "confirmed" report was that he was going to the Super Bowl in Arizona to watch his beloved Patriots. Recently, a SearchforBrody website has emerged calling upon his fans to make short videos asking for help in finding him. SearchforBrody also has a regularly updated blog.

As things stand, we have many objectives. Our first seems to be finding Brody, and making his film a success by expanding our game population and, ergo, public interest. Promoting Jagt's re-cut seems to be a part of this task as well. Secondly, videos have been surfacing about the early days of SKG and its members. They seem to be creating a timeline we can follow, but as of now, it remains unfinished.

More than anything, however, our job is to assemble information and frame Brody's story, for it is his relationships, and those of the people around him, which make this special. This is the essence of 48. As we delve into the characters and interact with them, we mutually affect each other and together we shape the story titled 48 Hours in Purgatory.
