please refrain from quoting large images...
It takes forever to load.

Or, please edit your posts to include a link rather than embeding the images, initially...

I will now tell you how to make the Cloverfield logo. Hopefully this is clearer than the other tutorial posted by Kingpin, because I could not even follow that one. (no offense)

1. Type "CLOVERFIELD" in big letters. Then match the text settings to this pic:

Note: I used the TrueType version of the font, and Photoshop CS2. I will not explain how to do the gradient thing because that is not used on the poster.

2. For the blur effect, duplicate the layer, click on the original layer, then Motion Blur 30 pixels twice. It should have rasterized by itself.

3. Set the alpha of the blurred layer to whatever you want. I used 59%.

4. From there you can merge the layers and scale the text down as much as you want as a raster.

JASC Paint Shop Pro can achieve the effect as well.

You need to type in the letters you want (3 spaces between each letter, five between each word). Copy that layer, then deselect the already existing one. Select the whole area again and use the "Wind" function. Go from the left and put the number 11 in the box. Then do it again from the right this time. Now press Ctrl-L to paste the original text back in. Then line it up, press the "Merge Layers" option and you're done.

And you can do this:

Admittedly I wasn't writing the tutorial at the same time as I was making the image, but if so desired I can post a proper tutorial, including the gradient which was used on the teaser posters, such as MONSTROUS. Smile

I doubt the coughing could do that. But what it could do is create a massive, inexorable, wordlwide epidemic that makes people expand or explode, thus procreating small, monsteresque creatures that roam around NYC.

It can do pretty much the same stuff when it comes to text effects. AND it requires less steps.
