Forgotten Asylum
The Book Can Kill

I'm not positive on this one as a RH or a TH, and leaning not since on the front page there is an entertainment disclaimer, but I've not gotten too far into it enough to confirm it either way.

That being said, I stumbled over this one doing research on something else, and it struck me as a novel refreshing slant...if it's just a story, I guess here is the better place. If it turns out to involve more interaction, as it seems to hint, I guess it might be moved later.

Quote:
And here's an added bonus. The first person who finds it may chose to contact me via e-mail and purchase the head of that patient. These mementos are explained in the History of the asylum, chapter "Heads of the Dead." The availability the head will be posted at the bottom of the story. Along with the head, I will send their bio card and a copy of their story. Unfortunately, any personal artifacts mentioned in these stories will not be included.

Shocked

http://www.forgottenasylum.com/index.htm

Premise at a glance: A psychiatrist meets the internet to share information about a hidden in plain sight asylum shoved into secrecy by governmental and medical red tape...the patients there share a secret, along with the issue of a book, pages apparently written by the patients. Suicide rate over the years neared 100% of anyone who ead the book. The asylum is still in operation, but he won't disclose the name or location. The book contained curious text, puzzles, blabblings, strange writing...on the original pages (papers) the paper had to be folded a particular way to read what the patient even wrote. This doctor did not dispose of the book as the asylum was ordered to do...instead, his sympathy for the place, as an employee to current time, and the patients has inspired him to offer up the book (and other curiousities) to the public in the name of remembrance....

The website itself has a couple hidden areas but it isn't set up as a puzzle/code to break to access. Interaction is encouraged and it's possible that the doctor would interact with those seeking to work out the contents of the book...

but....I'm still reading further, that's just where it seems to be heading.

It's well written and a really good story - the history section is static and "puzzleless" but it sets up the foundation for the existence of the site and the book...which may be where the 'game' aspect opens up.

Found something in the source on the store page. I won't ruin the game for anyone, but check out the hidden PayPal info on the store page and look at the e-mail address, then compare it to Dr.WindsorSPLATForgottenAsylum.com from the the contact page.

Also, go ahead and check out:

http://www.forgottenasylum.com/cemetery.htm

I found this by going to the link underneath 'history'. It's hard to make out what it says here, but upon clicking it you'll find a picture on your screen. Click it, to get to another, etc. etc. till you get to the cemetery page.

Yeah, I think that's specific to paypal and the acct used for that.

I finally finished reading the main content. I went back through the journals but it didn't really reveal anything at face value. Only a few entries referred to the asylum and the book, and then mostly in an manner of just being contemplative. I didn't scour it for hidden codes, I did see the cemetery, but decided to give it a shot and email the doc to express interest in obtaining a copy of said book.

It's a good premise and the creator has a lot of room to do a lot with it, and may still yet but it doesn't look like it at this point since the heads are no longer available and the book page hid the order button. If the dates are legit, it stops in 2006...

UNLESS....

It's supposed to look that way. One thing that does get my attention is that in History he described the evolution of the onset of the effects of having read the book...and that is pretty clear in the evolution of his journals...though the content is generic in and of itself, when he references the asylum he connects that to his state of mind which appears to be nosediving.

It's also interesting that on the main page he says to not ask him about his wife's death or the fire. Or the curious McStranton Experiment. Yet he mentions it several times....and the most recent entry is very much like his descriptions of entries in the book...and then he takes the book offer down on grounds it's dangerous? That's like teaser to me...like if you ask anyway a time or two he'll crack and reveal something and off it goes.

That's the part that keeps nudging me back not to take it at face value as a case of someone putting up a cool idea and then getting burned out or whatever and just wrapping it up with a cliffhanger. The doc's state of mind has been depressed. Also he mentioned an associate that helps him with the site. He provides an actual physical location for that person (in Ohio), but no email...

There are just little areas that get me suspicious in a reading between the lines manner.

Maybe the good doc will write back and clear it up.

well, i was looking through the source code on the store page and found an email. sent this message.

AHA! Found this email in the source of the store page. Now I won't say anything, but what exactly is the website for? Entertainment value? If so, you have done a very good job! Please email back, I need some closure. If it's real, I feel compelled to do something for the patients...and read the book

and got this reply

Wow. The Forgotten Asylum! I haven't thought of that site in quite some time.

I wish there was more info I could give you on the site, but I'm afraid there's little to tell. It's a site the company I was associated with worked on three years ago and I was new to developing. This e-mail address you found is my personal e-mail and NOT the e-mail address I used with the company, so I was shocked to hear that it was in the source code somewhere. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. The only thing I can figure is that sometimes I do tests on application sheets, using my own e-mail address when testing to see if I get the information sent, then I change it to the correct e-mail address before the site goes live. I'm so embarrassed (professionally) that I left it in somewhere. I've contacted someone that hopefully can get it off of the site.

Sorry, there's not much more I can say. There were confidentiality agreements with the company, but I'm not sure I have any earth shattering info to pass along anyway. I will say that at first I naturally assumed that the site was just for fun but after a while, the best I can say is I don't know. I went back and look at the site and it looks like "Dr. Windsor" stopped writing years ago, so one would guess that he's died. It was really creepy working on that site and I really don't wish to be associated with it.

Again, thank you so much for brining my e-mail address to my attention. Please don't give this e-mail to anyone since it's the address I use for family and friends.

now i have the email but its his personal one so im not giving it out to anyone. if u want it find it in the source b4 he takes it down

So what does that mean? Is that guy saying that he set up the webpage for Dr. Windsor?

This looks really intersting. If you type in Forgotten Asylum in google, you come to a page that has different asylums on it with pictures. One is actually called the Forgotten Asylum, except part of it is known to still house patients.

Something else I found really interesting.

http://www.abandonedasylum.com/photos.html

If you go here, and scroll down to Foxboro State Hospital, it mentions the fact that it's abandoned and that it has a graveyard--and the tombstones are numbered.

Just fun FYI. I hate it when I come across websites that intrigue me and I don't know what to do with them lol.

It may be fake--but I think there's too much detail on the website for it to have been created just to exist in itself. A lot of work went into the story and the graveyard, etc. I think it would be cool if it were some kind of ARG.

I don't know though. I'm starting to look up asylums and it's kind of interesting. I also sent Dr. Windsor an e-mail, and it actually accepted it and didn't return it, so hopefully I'll get a response from someone.

This could just be an old website that used to be a game. I have no clue, but it's interesting nonetheless.

yea i think that, whatever it was, was over a long time ago. this thread only started cuz someone saw something interesting. also, if you read the journal entries, they stop sometime in 2003. now i know they could be faking the date, but theres been nothing new on it for quite some time. AND the guy i talked to who was involved did say it took place a while ago.
