 		[META] Marathon-Halo-ILB
This post is about connections.

Most people are pretty sure that Halo is connected to ILB, because of the trailer, hints in ILB, etc...but something most people are not to clear on is the Halo-Marathon connection.

Four conclusions are found:

1. Halo is not and never was connected.
All the recycling we have seen of graphics, plot elements, etc...is just Bungie using good details they had used in the past.

2. Halo wasn't connected, until Bungie "saw the light."
At first, Bungie was simply recycling elements, until they saw the perfect gateway to Marathon through Halo, and began to shape it into just that. At first, they completely denied it, (truthfully) but as we have seen, such denials died off lately, leaving many to wonder.

3. They have always been connected, Bungie is playing with you.
Bungie may have intended to mislead us, while all the time planning a connection.




I am in favor of #2 or #3, however I have my doubts...such as the difference in looks between the Covenant/Flood and the S'pht and Pfhor. However, there could be many different alien races out there. (The Convenant themselves are an assemby of races.) (Also, the Pfhor hunter in M1 does bear some resemblance to the Halo hunter. It's just the Halo hunter is always hunched over.)

 		And than again I think people could be reaching and making connections that aren't really there. Now before anyone starts in on me for missing the "obvious", let me explain. I never even heard about Marathon until 3 days ago when I got involved in all this. I personally think that the only connection is that both games are made by Bungie. Just because they both have an enslaving alien race, AI's, and mention Mjolnir, there hasn't been enough inargueable points of connection stated to convince me. And don't start saying anything about rampant AI's, I have not read/heard one thing proof positive that AI's go rampant in Halo. And doesn't Marathon have a date/time index after Halo? So how could it be Mjolnir mk. IV in Marathon and Mjolnir mk. V in Halo? I'm not trying to convince anyone, just stating my ideas. I welcome conversation/debate about this.

Who he is was never fully explained, but I'd be willing to wager it's Durandal. I'm guessing that somehow he achieved his goal of escaping the closure of the universe by wrapping back around the other side.

 		Thank for the link, I missed that section the last time I went to that site. I still think unless it is stated flat out that the two are related I think they should be taken for seperate works with similarities. I mean, really, what better source for ideas and names than history and mythology. These are my opinion, and I haven't had a chance to delve into the backstory of Marathon yet, so that opinion may. Once again thanks for the link and being civil about things.

edit: I don't take the Cortana letters to be a part of the Halo universe. I take them as ad/info placements to let peolpe familiar with Marathon know about Halo. You said it yourself the "he" in the letter is speculated to be Durandal, not with out a doubt proven to be Durandal. Just my opinion.

Agreed, it is pure speculation, however I don't see it as being unlikely. Are the Cortana letters considered to be non-canon? It sure would make things a lot more interesting if there is a connection between Halo/Marathon, so I'm not quite ready to throw out any theories along those lines yet.

This is even further off the beaten path because I have no source, but I could have sworn I'd heard somewhere a dev quote that Halo 2 was supposed to contain more links back to Marathon. Since I can't substantiate that I don't ask anyone to believe it, but if anyone else ever remembers anything like that feel free to let me know I haven't totally lost it. Wink

 		I never said I was throwing the possibility out. I just prefer to stick with my opinions or opinions I agree with until I see evidence that sway me to a new train of thought. I personally will listen to any therory as long as it is presented with intelligence, common sense, reason, and civility.
