LOST-digging up old mysteries.
Colossus??

Its been a while, but does anyone remember in the season 1 finale of Lost, when Sayid is on the sailboat looking for the Others' base-camp and he spots a giant stone foot that looks like the ruins of an ancient Colossus-like statue?

it was just a solitary mystery that didnt even lead up to anything on the show. Does anyone know the deal with it?

There are only 3 people in my office today, so seeing as it's quiet (and that it's a Monday!) I thought I'd kick of a bit of Lost speculation.

My own theory would be as follows:
The statue is from the Roman era - the sandalled foot certainly gives that impression - and is of a Greek god (Zeus or Apollo maybe - see Apollo chocolate bars). It was originally built in Tunisia but somehow ended up on the island. Either it was moved there deliberately, or, more likely, ended up there as a result of some dimension-travelling between the island and Tunisia, rumoured to be its "opposite" place. There have been several large statues built in Tunisia many years ago - here and here.

My other theory would be that it was built by an ancient civilization that once inhabited the island, but frankly that's a bit boring Wink

Edit:
The reason(s) for the Tunisia connection (I kinda assumed that people would know why that was!) are as follows:
- Charlotte found a polar bear skeleton in the dessert there ("Confirmed Dead") which had a collar with the DHARMA Hydra logo on it.
- It has been alluded to in various podcasts
- The Orchid orientation video suggests something weird is going on.

Also, I have no idea why it has four toes... Maybe a nod to Atlantis, whose inhabitants were rumoured to only have four toes.

yes, i like the Atlantis theory, seems like that would be the only reason for the four toes.

has this statue ever been directly alluded to in any later episodes?

I don't have anything to really add, but as I was passing by reading this topic, my mother came by and said:
"I know what it is!
Somebody ate the rock-biter."
Maybe they're in The Never-Ending Story? Laughing

It does, in my opinion, look Greek though, considering the foot-strap. I think the four toes is just artistic modification, or an error when sculpting. Anatomy isn't always to the letter with old statues or pictures, check your local museum for reference.

Apollo and Artemis
four toed statue

In the British Museum is the torso of the Colossus of the Naxians, and next to it the hips (1,25 m.). His hair fell down his back in lines of eight locks. Small holes on the body (back, neck, waist and hips) show that the statue was ornamented with bronze accessories, such as a belt and hair locks. Neither the head, although surviving up until at least 1675, nor the legs and arms have ever been found, whereas four toes of the left foot, together with a section of the plinth of the statue, have resided in the British Museum since 1818.

Two of these fragments are now in the British Museum ; one is the fore part of a male left foot wearing a sandal.

This is the Apollo reference. It used to stand infront of columns of the Artemision on Delos island - the sanctuary of Apollo.

There are strong Apollo and Artemis references ... look up their sacred animals. Most have appeared on the island. Artemis was the female twin of the male Apollo. She could bring disease and cure it.

This doesn't really give much of an answer to the mystery, just an answer of why there hasn't been any further explanation of it.

From http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Ausiello-Report/Chuck-Scoop-Secrets/800035792

Lost scoop: Lindelof satisfied the crowd's appetite for Lost scoop by revealing the real reason the four-toed statue has yet to be seen again. After the monument first appeared "we got a note back from the network that said, 'This is too weird,'" he explained. "I was like, 'Do you watch the show? This is too weird?' Essentially, they said, 'Could it be a six-toed statue?' I was like, 'Someone explain to me why a six-toed statue is less weird than a four-toed statue?' And they're still noodling on that."

Hope that helps quell your fascination with it for awhile..
