I know dude, it's just that the "me correcting Americans" happens a lot. I have nothing against you.

The only thing that I hate is when some Americans think we're so far behind that they get surprised when we are even in the web. I also hate when they confuse me with a Mexican. THAT PISSES ME OFF!!!

Amazingly, the only way I don't have access to the web is cause of a blackout or when I break a cable. Otherwise, always on!

Re: [Spoilers] Military Oddities
Was the military portrayed accurately?

One thing that bothered me a lot was that the military didn't try to confiscate Hud's camera when they stumbled into the explodatorium/makeshift hospital. I know that the army guys had other things on their minds (not to mention on their walls and ceiling), but it seems to me that at least someone in higher authority (like the one who told Hud to get the camera out of his face – he looked like he was in charge of something) would tell someone to grab it. After all, from the way that some of the previews blurred that one soldier's face, we can tell that they are at least a little bit concerned about confidentiality.

Another thing that bothered me was the whole evacuation thing. There were only a few choppers? You're telling me out of the entire population of NY who might have been left behind, that there wouldn't still be long lines of people trying to hop on a chopper? I'm talking about other people who might be trying to do what Rob's group was, or people who were trapped, or hiding, but got free at the last second? It just seemed weird, almost like it was a special escort set up just for Rob and his friends.

I don't really know much about military matters, so tell me what you guys think. I did love the movie, but I also love to bitch, so there you go.

The evacuation had started around the thirty minute mark. Frantic hysteria combined with the monster rampaging throughout the city started at the eighteen minute mark. The military had the chopper flying over and blaring out: "evacuate now". The military soldier did say that they had been flying people out all night and that the last helicopter was flying out at 6AM.

As for the camera, as many have said before me, the man had no reason to confiscate it. He really wasn't worried about it when a monster the size of a skyscraper is eating people.

I have a friend who's military specialty was as a tank driver. The scene where the Rob et al get caught on the street between the military and MGP bothered him because the tank was firing and stationary, while the mobile artillary piece fired on the move. This would be the opposite of reality. The artillary is actually incapable of firing while moving, and tank jockeys prefer to not be a stationary target.

Also, he mentioned a helicopter w/ civillian passengers would never be used to survey the results of a bombing run. (ie, it looks like the chopper moved in, lowering its altitude to where MGP fell to do an assessment of the bombing results instead of bugging out)

Unfortunately he's also the type that that bit annoyed him the rest of the film..

I don't think they would have taken the camera, since nothing secrative was happeneing...they had to kill the big roaring monster running around the city.

But yeah..the chopper scene seemed a little skimpy.

I don't think it was surveying the results of the bombing run; I think it just happened to be in the right place at the right time (or wrong place at the wrong time). It didn't seem to me that the helicopter changed direction/altitude - I think that was just Hud moving around in the cockpit and zooming in to get a better view.

Military oddities and everything else......
Questions.......

I was wondering about many things that people have posted in this thread. Keeping in mind that this is a movie I still left the theatre scratching my head. We see only adults and as someone pointed out already, no kids and not one single pet being led away by their owner.

We never see any remains of bodies anywhere. Did anyone notice this? I've only seen the movie once but I didn't see any bodies on the streets.

The monster did look different at different points in the film but I don't believe we're dealing with more than one monster. Probably inconsistencies with the effects team as they put the scenes together is the most likely explanation.

I honestly didn't think there was anywhere near enough panic and mayhem in the streets. We have towers being toppled and people intially running but later on, people are casually strolling along. I don't think so.

About those falling towers.

Does anyone else think it odd that within a short time of buildings falling over that the debris/smoke in the air cleared so fast? The fires and ruins of the towers should have made it a nightmare for the airstrikes and people on the ground making their way around to safety.

Hell, people should have been gasping for breath out there. Why the mad rush with the military bringing in the big guns by morning anyway? The creature wasn't making any attempts to leave Manhatten.

Which was odd in of itself. (why not take refuge in the water for example?) With that being the case, they could have waited a bit longer, delaying the monster and checking for more survivors. Why the hell was their helicopter even flying over the creature as they evacuated to begin with? They doing a tour?

And finally, Beth and Rob are more than likely dead and I don't see them suriving unless for one extremely unlikely scenerio. The creature's own body shields them somehow from the blasts.

You've pointed out some really good stuff. Especially with the kids and pets(or any animals). The dead bodies and especially exploded bodies.

As for how quickly the military responded, wasn't there sonar images and other VMC stuff to suggest that they already knew Clover was coming? I also remember a pic of the navy and airforce attacking what is assumed to be the monster out in open water. I'd imagine this pic would be before the attack that occurs in the movie, so the claim that airpower would be the first response is correct and the air strikes simply halt when the creature enters the city.

The delay before the evacuation kinda work against the theory, but if they only knew a general area, maybe they didn't want to commit to a large scale evacutaion of NY only to have the monster change course and then have to redirect forces. Also, it would be an odd evacuation request if no one had seen the monster yet.
