Words cannot describe how excited I am about ARGFest-o-con being in Boston! I'm so there. If y'all need a hand scouting/planning, I'd be glad to help as much as my 2 jobs and grad class will let me...

See y'all in July!

I gotta say, I'm pretty excited to have ARGFest in Boston. I'll be happy to lend a hand in the planning as well, since I live here.

I'm in! But we knew that already.

Can we nail down a date sooner rather than later? For purely selfish reasons of course, I have lots going on this summer...

See everyone there!

Friday - Sunday, July 18 - 20, 2008. Conference day is Saturday again! We'll be able shortly to tell you how to book rooms at the hotel to support the conference room costs (we need to book a certain minimum of the blocked out rooms through the group name we've almost got set up).

We're gonna be talking about the 2008 ARGfest-o-con on this weekend's recording of the ARG Netcast. Spacely is going to be moderating a live discussion which anyone can join in on. For more info, see our announcement at the ARG Netcast web site.

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could do me a favor.

I am not that interested in attending the arg-fest, but I am very curious about it, what does it entail? What goes on during this time? I guess I am just looking for what kinds of activites you guys participate in.

There are the games and the lectures (which are on YouTube). I believe there's some drinking and karaoke.

But the secret conference is the best part.

Topics include stuff like:

* Behavior modification 101
* Cognitive biases and how to make them flourish
* Backmasking, holograms and other forms of thought reform in media (Are they working for you?)

Half-day workshops

* Charisma and Coercive persuasion using IM
* Introduction to deprogramming and indoctrination
* Hypnosis as a means to an end
* Love bombing via social networking
* Personality alteration via steganography
* Snapping: America's Epidemic of Sudden Personality Change
* Tomorrow's Pioneers: Yesterday's News
* Trouts and flounders and herrings; Oh, my!
* Truth drugs and the FDA: What they don't know, won't hurt you

Don't forget the pimps & geeks costume contest.

Edit: Seriously, it's a chance for us to socialize face-to-face instead of just in chat or in the forum. For many it's the first time to meet a friend in person (some of us have conversed in here for years before seeing eachother in person).

It started long ago (2003) when SpaceBass was coming down to Las Vegas to visit vpisteve and asked if anyone wanted to tag along and 12 people showed up. Later that year it was Orlando. Then Vancouver, New York, Chicago, and last year San Francisco. We have just socialized but in NY we had a half day seminar and a Fest Quest that walked us all over the lower half of Manhatten. Chicago was more socializing and museum/zoo visiting (and great hot fudge). San Fran brought us another great seminar (can be seen on YouTube) and Fest Quest that is basically a great puzzle trail leading to dinner party.

Indeed we're getting closer, and in the background, a lot of work has been done and is still being done to make this the awesomest ARGfest ever! Very Happy We already have an impressive lineup of confirmed speakers, and hope to complete it soon so we can publicly announce it.

Also, we are planning to get Registration in the air soon... we'll keep you posted!

Slightly off-topic: Unfiction Member Bingo

Ok. So. Have you ever had that experience where you decide to start going to the gym once a week, so you do. You buy a monthly membership and show up once a week. Some weeks you are extra enthusiastic and go multiple times! You start recognizing people and they recognize you and you have a cool little thing going. One week there's a really important deadline at work, so you work late every night and can't get to the gym. You feel bad about this and decide to make it up by working harder next week. But next week rolls around and an out-of-town friend shows up unexpectedly and so you stay out late partying and having a good time. A third week comes along and you don't have a really great excuse except that you're just tired. It's been "one of those days" all week. Because you skipped out the past two weeks, it's all the more easy to just let the workout slide another week. Pretty soon, you have missed enough weeks that you'd feel a little embarrassed at returning. You fear that your excuses will probably sound pretty flimsy to the friends you made at the gym, especially those excuses from recent weeks because you didn't really have a good excuse. Because you don't want to face up to all this, you try to make yourself forget about the gym altogether. You take an alternate route home from work--one that doesn't pass the gym--so that you're actively avoiding it. Eventually, you decide the gym was never really for you anyway, so you'll just phone it up and cancel your membership.

That's actually a pretty good parallel (well, except for that last bit about canceling membership) to how I'm feeling right now about ARGfest and this thread specifically (and, to a certain extent, ARGs in general.) I kind of learned a while ago that I was probably not able to go to ARGfest. Finances have been thin (bought a house) and extra time has been scarce (bought a house needing a few improvements.) We just took a recent vacation and will not have brought the savings up to comfortable levels by ARGfest. I briefly chatted in IRC about not going when the topic came up, but avoided the message boards. I didn't really post anything here because a post seemed so final. So I started avoiding the thread because I didn't want to think about it. As life became more hectic, I didn't really have enough time to catch up on all the other threads, but that was kind of okay because I was avoiding this one. And then it all got blurry and merged into one and I was avoiding the forums in general for no good reason. And, through no conscious action of my own, I had stopped following the current set of ARGs (which is unrelated to active avoiding and more due to my time constraints.) But still, I've felt kind of bad about the whole thing.

And so this post is me trying to get back in to this (and other) threads. I can't go to ARGfest, but I'll live vicariously through those that do go. As penance, I offer up, in the tradition of ARG Buzzword Bingo:

Unfiction Member Bingo

Have fun in Boston, all! I'll be thinking of ya!
