[SPEC/QUESTION] Melissa's Neural Network

Maybe I am assigning too much weight to the following.

Comment snipped fromt he Military Conversations:

Quote:
ONI Tech Kowalski: Fr'instance - know what the single best correlate is for these babies, in terms of matching personality to service designation? Favorite game.

It appears that the AI is either

a.) A Cybernetic brain. (I'm thinking along the lines of "The Ship who sang")

If taken from severely wounded or dying people to preserve their "being" they would need time to adjust to the new situation, and may have some higher functioning damage. If a child growing, they would have both training and waiting for the body to finish growing.

b.) an AI that was allowed to develop a personality before having programming installed in a ship (OK I really don't like this one, because there are two issues here -either the ship has a neural network of fixed size and can make what associations it wants, or if it is Programming, allowing it to develop a personality would use additional resources and possibly add weight) There are valid reasons for allowing differing personalities in the same work designation, but I would think that in terms of getting something up and running faster it would be easier to clone several of the personalities in each designation in order to skip a lot of added development time before the Neural network is usable. (i.e. the Business floor plan model, if it is storage it isn't generating income, we need to maximize the income space)

Other interesting notes: Oni Technician... the crew member responsible for the care/repair of the AI, or one who works closely with the AI - at least that is my impression from the military conversations.

Odd that they use the word Oni (Japanese transliteration?) which loosely translates to "Demon" - a reference to the phrase "ghost in the machine?"

OK Bungie Fans, what is an Oni Technician in the Bungie universe?

I'd like to point out that an AI with a personality would not be slower, Cortana is considered and most intelligent AI there is and definitely has an AI.

I'm not worried about speed, processors are getting smaller and faster every day. What I am looking at is the space/mass requirements of memory storage.

Operator/Melissa does talk about being pinned to a sand grid, that I interprest as others have from time to time, sand grid = silicon chip.
but also this from the monologues:
Quote:
No access to medbots or pharm regimes

So that says we are dealing with something that is at least partially organic in nature that has nerves and pain sensors - to me that says there must be a physical body somewhere, with the storage medium information - programs etc. dumped in whatever storage it could find to use while repairs are being made.

Since this units favorite game is "Hide and Seek" it must be a scout or recon type vessel

ONI Tech. Office of Naval Intelligence, is what I thought it was.

Though, it does correlate to the Japanese word, yes, and I was wondering if anyone else noticed that one of Bungie's other games is Oni.

Also, in the Halo universe, "Smart" AIs are based on a human brain as it functions (most notably the major AI Cortana from Doctor Halsey.) and theoretically have the same personalities and the like. So I imagine that when, right after the quote you selected, he says "You know, from before," he means from the human mind before the AI was programmed.

Also, I disagree with your analysis of the phrase "No access to medbots or pharm regimes", because I don't think the Operator is attempting to access them for itself. This is from the "there's many ways to skin a--" section, and I believe she's still trying to take Dana down, probably using these systems. All her saying that tells us is that she expected there to be some- so it's likely that on the ship she controlled, there were. That's all.

Is this what everyone else had concluded as well?

That's the story I'm putting my money on... but this is all pure spec until at least the next update.

My own interpretation of this

Alright, what I am about to post is what I think this all means really... and all of this is from other peoples hypothesis that I simply threw together.
While perhaps slightly off topic for this thread, someone did question weither or not this is how everyone saw it, and this is where I say "well, sorta"

The AI is still confused. Someone (us) is probing the location she is on, trying to figure out what she is, however being military, this probing appears to her to be potential enemy intrusion. The AI is also confused about who or even if there is an assassin, mistaking the attempt to 'fix' the site as an attack on her. As for the part specific to the whole bang-bang stuff seems to indicate that there may have been some initial attempt to upload into a system, in order to not only perform repairs, but also infiltrate an enemy system. I effect, with no place else to go, the confused AI stumbled blindly across the web site content and misinterpreted the content as Covenant, thus the reference to 'inoccent bystandard' in the same text. The AI only recently realized that its blind and muddled attack was on an unintended target.

Add to that one of the links, specifically the one about a meteor crash in 1927. This suggests a crash location, remote, out of the way and too hard to get to for anyone to figure out it was actually a crashed ship. The repair process may have been going on for quite some time, every since the crash, or was recently activated by some external event. In any case, the system awoke to find itself with access to a network and the SPDR process took advantage of this by using that system to backup and try to repair the AI. It is likely the AI has no clue what year it is in or maybe even what year it 'was' in before, it is working from the assumption that there is an enemy out there, possibly (due to the probes on its systems) on the very network it is being restored on, so it is doing the only thing it knows how to, survive, evade, resist and eventually escape. However, it has no real idea where it is, what it is evading, what its enemies really are and where to escape to.

That all is from one source, but add that to this...
I belive The Operator is Melissa, the computer AI used to decrypt the Covenant's communications. Her only objectives are:

to keep her ship (The Circumference?) alive (Survive)
Avoid detection by the Covenant (Evade)
Keep the secret of the decrypted communications from being discovered (Resist)
And Currently, get out of I Love Bees (Escape, the one thing she cannot seem to do)

Lord help me if I can figure out where Reveal (the alternative to Resist) fits.

When they tried to erase Melissa's memory banks to prevent the classified secret from getting out, She fought back and protected some of it. It then Somehow(?) got back in time into Dana's website.

That's all I've got, that's in semi-coherent form, that is.

Trout me if you want, but I seem to recall one of the AIs mentioning how they have been fed with trout. I think we're being watched.

And you get a rather complete and semi coherant hypothesis with just a few minor flaws. As I said, I apoligize if this is seen as off topic, just had the need to feed my own desire to share. I hope I have made someone think at least

Well, we now know that the operator is Mellissa. I am trying to figure out what ship she is from. That would help us figure out why she is there I think.
and why she may be so dang confused Confused

The Circumference AI was destroyed while the ship was in dock above Reach during the attack. This AI was leaving the system during that battle and witnessed the assault on the planet. Ther were two other ONI ships converted from ships like the Circumference, thier names were the Lark and the Applebee. I don't know if it's just me, but the Applebee seems like a logical, and reasonable choice for the ship this AI came from.

That quote is talking about how she's trying to access things in Dana's house to kill her.

I recall reading the ship that Melissa was the AI of discovered evidence that the Covenant was planning an attack on "Troy." That is what needed to be reported.
