Is saying "Back on topic" on topic if you aren't actually addressing the topic at hand?
So, we've had claims that it would take a long, long time to finish this game. It does seem like an ambitious project for independent game designers. What kind of money does it take? That's what I really want to know.

Well really Twiggins is the guy spending all the money on ZBrush and FPS Creator. ZBrush costs about $300 and so does FPS Creator.
The game is planned to finish in about 6-8 months, which is actually a pretty tight schedule.

this is somewhat off-topic but I saw a commerical tonight, on TV, for a new ps3 (?) or computer game.
it's called Turning Point: Fall of Liberty
just a coincidence that the final image of the ad is the head of Ms. Liberty falling off and rolling or did they steal it from "Cloverfield"
doesn't matter but it just stood out to me...

Well Bad Robot 'stole' the image of the decapitated Liberty's head from Escape From New York.

So they got approval from Paramount/ Bad Robot to continue the Viral marketing?
And if you believe they will not do anything...check this out on Paramount.
PARAMOUNT PICTURES - GOOGLE UNVEILS COPYRIGHT FILTERING SYSTEM
Google on Monday unveiled what it called "YouTube Video Identification" aimed at making it easier for movie and TV copyright owners to prevent the unauthorized use of their material on Google's YouTube site. "We're delighted that Google appears to be stepping up to its responsibility and ending the practice of profiting from infringement," Mike Fricklas, general counsel of Viacom, told the Wall Street Journal. Viacom, whose holdings include Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks, MTV, and Comedy Central, has filed a $1-billion lawsuit against YouTube alleging copyright infringement. Fricklas did not indicate whether the video identification system would affect the lawsuit. The filtering technology also permits copyright owners to leave their content on YouTube but share any advertising revenue derived from it.
and they do go after Lil Guys also.....This was on a 12 minute film the artist made.
Paramount Pictures is suing a New York artist for copyright infringement

dalphx,
I believe they mean the viral marketing will be seperate from Cloverfield, but in the same ARG style that the film used. If it's non profit, and they state that they aren't associated with Bad Robot, Paramount, etc... can they still be sued? I'm not sure.

"If I don't charge for it, it's not a violation."
False. Whether you charge can affect the damages awarded in court, but that's main difference under the law. It's still a violation if you give it away -- and there can still be serious damages if you hurt the commercial value of the property.
This was off a copyright attorney site on infringement.
plus they are seeking money in donations....There might be special TAX rules based on donations. Paramount could get the IRS involved along with shutting the site down. They should take the donation off the site.

Plus they are selling ad space on their website which means they are generating revenue from using someone else's intellectual property.
So what do these guys actually have in their favor? lol

IDK??? Still create it, just change anything related to the movie. Make it your own creation. I would like to see the game, but feel if they continue down this path it will be stopped.
