If i'm not too certain, I believe that you are using Pythagorean Theorem, and if i'm not correct in that assumption, then maybe that can help.

Well, actually, Pythagorean is the only to work the given information into giving a third side. All the others require an angle to be given.

I added more info to my post to explain that.

This is all assuming that it is actually a triangle that the riddle pertains to.

Well, it does say

Hint: Math.

So I think your right. It must be a triangle.

Well, the only thing we can assume is that the hypotenuse > 12 because of the Greater Side law.. the two sides' sum must be greater than the hypotenuse or it's not a triangle.
