Unforums RSS Filter

Some of you may know that you can get an RSS feed for a particular forum on Unfiction at the following URL:

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/rss.php

However, what you can't do is get an RSS feed for a particular thread(s).

To solve that problem, I've whipped up a filter script. It takes a forum number and a bit of text, and it looks for that bit of text within square brackets inside the title of a thread. The general syntax is:

http://www.mobilefono.com/unrss/<forumnumber>/<searchtext>

So, to get an RSS feed for all threads with [RING] in the title inside the CF With Potential forum (140), I use:

http://www.mobilefono.com/unrss/140/ring

It should work with all parameters available in http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/rss.php, but it hasn't been tested much . The other caveat is that you can only get max 15 items at a time from the RSS feed, and given the speed of posts in some forums, you may want to have your aggregator check it as frequently as it allows.

Let me know if there are any problems or suggestions!

thanks for this! I'm sure it'll be helpful to many people Smile

I personally have my reader refreshing the overall forum posts every 5 minutes. Almost all of the time it catches every post, but sometimes there are > 15 posts in 5 minutes. I keep the last post in my reader for threads I'm tracking so I can open the thread from there and read if I think I missed something.

So I can pretty vouch that if you've got an RSS showing only [RING] posts, a 5 minute refresh shoud be sufficient to catch everything Smile

And if/when Ring gets its own forum group, it'll already work for any posts just in that group. So great job Smile

Does your script keep its own RSS history and refresh itself consistently? Or does it call the full forum RSS feed and filter it every time someone queries yours?

It's a straight scrape of the Unforums RSS, no caching. If every single user starts subscribing to it I guess I'll have to reconsider.

Thanks for this tool!

It seems this only filters on text within []. So, e.g., http://www.mobilefono.com/unrss/10/trailhead gives you the trailhead of several ARG's.

Filtering on other words on the subject doesn't seem to work.

Is there a way around this?

Thanks!
