TOP 10 ARG's of all time
What do you think?

Hey guys,

I'm writing an article on alternative reality gaming and so I was wondering: what do YOU think are the top 10 ARG's of all time and why? I'll keep this open for 1 week and afterwards tabulate your votes.

1. I Love Bees
2. Art of the Heist
3. The Beast
4. Lockjaw
5. Metacortechs/Project Mu
6. Last Call Poker
7. MeiGeist
8. Eldritch Errors
9. Urban Hunt
10. Acheron
11. Sammeeeees
12. Chasing the Wish

May I suggest reading through some of the threads in this very subforum. There are already a number of comments about "TOP" including characters, moments, puzzles, etc. And also comments about why people play ARGs.

Top 10 games are very subjective. I played some great games, but also wasn't around or didn't play some that other folks really liked.

And to make a Top 10 list for an article, you really have to have a good feel for the genre (including the reason why it's Alternate, not Alternative) and the history. Imbri's quickstart guide and the ARG tutorial are great places to start.

My personal list?
Sammeeeees (both the original and the sequel - just read my Story So Far threads and you'll understand my emotional involvement in the story and the characters - which are the top reasons I play ARG)
CTW (Chasing the Wish - my first ARG, great characters, great story, amazing puzzles for which I'm greatful we have some a wonderful community to help solve them)
Last Call Poker (see Imbri's post above)
MeiGeist (didn't play but those who did shared their experience and I read through what a great time they had)
Ny Takama (same reason as MeiGeist)
Urban Hunt (freaky story, great puzzles, fun twist at the end)
I Love Bees (didn't play, but watched the madness and mayham of those who did - it was a world-wide experience)
Metacortechs (didn't play, but watched it transpire)
The Beast (the grand-daddy of the genre, before my time, but I've read enough about it to be sad I missed it).

I would also have to add Art of the Heist, Vanishing Point (both marketing campaigns but they opened up the world of ARG to new players who had never heard of ARGs before), let's also include Year Zero, Perplex City and can't leave out Eldritch Errors (something new, very Chaotic Fiction, and is still ongoing).

This is the list of ARGs since I've been here

1. Year Zero
2. I love bees
3. 48 hours in Purgatory
4. Perplex City
5. The human pet
6. The Dark Knight
7. Cloverfield
8. Iris
9. Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles
10. Heroes 360

There are a lot here that you will disagree with, because I haven't been here all that long. Really, I registered for Cloverfield, and that's it.

As for the name, I'm all for using the correct name of the genre. The difference isn't in pronounciation - the difference is in using the correct term or using an incorrect one.

Favorite games I've played - my favorite game is whatever I'm currently playing. Right now I'm not playing actively any game but I would include, in reverse chronological order:

Chain Factor- a brilliant mix of an excellent casual game with a behind the scenes story that tied in seamlessly with a TV episode of Numb3rs

Eldritch Errors - Book 1 so much fun to try to understand what was going on, challenging the preset ideas of players and a strong story that keep me awake at night. Innovative use of a computer virus coupled with the stories of horror.

Why so Serious - two distinct tracks for fans to follow,

Monster Hunters Club - great promotion with a strong story for a fantastic movie.

Last Call Poker - tied with ilb as my personal favorite

Art of the Heist

I love bees

( Running out for a meeting I'll post my reasons later if I get a chance0

All I will say is that Perplex City was my first game, my first love, and no game has ever come even close to that experience for me.

It's very hard to qualify a list of the top 10 ARGs, as each ARG a player plays will naturally have a firm grip on their list.

But I think there are a few everyone can agree on as being Excellent ARGs, even if they didn't play them or if it occured before their time. There are some ARGs that have had such an effect on the community that they resonate throughout the community for years to come.

Some examples I think most of us can agree on:

- The Beast
- Metacortechs
- I Love Bees
- Art of the Heist
- Last Call Poker
- Chasing the Wish
- Perplex City

(this is in no way a complete list, its just a few i think most of us can agree on)

Not to say that other games aren't excellent, they just don't have as much of a wide ranging effect on the community at large as these do.

I don't have a personal top 10 list, but I know I would include two of the games I fully played:
- Art of the Heist
- Who Is Benjamin Stove?
and a few of the games i nipped around the edges:
- Last Call Poker
- Perplex City

You can judge a game on its successfulness (number of players?), but whether or not success equals "best" is a point for contention. I believe a truly objective list of the top 10 would be hard, if not impossible.

Good luck with the article!

(Note: there's a whole $#!tload of ARGs i'm sad I missed out on...most recently, Sammeeeees)

I really haven't played that many so...the only ones I've played that actually completed or are still going on:

1. 48 hours in Purgatory
2. Anne's memory
3. Iris
