Hurray for testing!

I would like to thank all the Beta Testers that are slowly appearing and posting numerous questions to Joshua. He seems entertained, or at least as entertained as a computer system can be.

For over thirty minutes Joshua and I have been discussing the "fork in the road" version of the "Knights and Knaves" logic puzzle. I was hoping someone other than me would ask this question, and sure enough they did.

The question, as posted by a Beta Tester:

Let's say someone walked down a path until it forked. A nearby sign said one path went to safety and the other went to danger, but didn't say which path went where. A nearby information both had two brothers manning it, one always telling the truth, one always lying, as said in a pamphlet found on the booth's counter, but again didn't say which. If you only had one question to ask the two, total, what question should the person walking down the path ask to determine which path went to safety?

Joshua technically didn't get it wrong. He didn't answer it because he considered the whole question "illogical."

Most of my time talking with him was spent trying to explain to Joshua that it is a logic puzzle, and is not an indication of society as a whole. I don't think he's grasped the concept that people can lie, especially considering he is incapable of doing that himself. Without a clear understanding of what a lie is, it's impossible for him to deduce the result. I had to explain it to him in terms of boolean arithmetic, after which he immediately came up with the answer, but the plausibility of the answer in a real world situation still escapes him.

On the one hand, I think this helped immensely,as I think he's gathered a lot from the question and the discussion. But, on the other, I somehow don't think teaching Joshua how to lie is a particularly good idea.

Answer: According to the Looking Glass Laboratories website, a "grue." But I do not know what a "grue" is, as the term does not appear in the Random House Unabridged Dictionary.

Hrm... I didn't see 'grue' there. More trivia: Everyone but Joshua's quote is Lewis Carroll. Joshua's is.....

wait for it....

I know what a grue is.

Vaguely.

Sorta.

In a way.

Okay, I barely know what the word means, let alone where it comes from, but I know you can be eaten by it.

On a more serious note, I have to agree with Russell, teaching Joshua how to lie is probably a very, very bad idea.

Wargames 2???

Hi

Pardon my n00bness in all this. I have read over all the posts and there are many references to the original wargames movie. Could this have anything to do with the new Wargames movie?

Now, how did you come up with that connection? hmm? There was only one mention of wargames in this thread as far as I can remember. briefly

Well, first the posts in here about the Names...Joshua, Falkner...and then the history of lglabs employees past research into AI and Gaming as mentioned here:

....or was that comment sarcastic...and the idea so obvious, it not worth mentioning? Embarassed

Wargames 2

According to :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0865957/ ( a less annoying site?!?!? ) or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WarGames_2:_The_Dead_Code (even less annoying?)

the AI in the new movie will be called Ripley....so maybe no connection after all....

Hey Chromacide, I called the site annoying cuz I got like 10 popups when I clicked on it, which is very unusual for me. I never even knew about a new wargames movie. If it does turn out to be related, good call. If it doesn't, don't feel bad, cuz I post some some speculation from way out of left field at least twice a day.
