I agree Bidvision, they do seem to be quite knowledgeable. I'm impressed with this whole thing so far.

Here's my new question:

Me wrote:

Yeah, I dug up an Angel situation for him, lol. It's a good philosophical question, though. I'll edit in the reply once he answers.

On the "our team" page, we get a picture of everyone.

this guy

is Gordon Miller

The guy on the left of this picture on the "about us" page looks like the same bloke

So who are the other two? The man in the background doesn't look like anyone we've met so far, and the woman in the foreground doesn't look like Jaquelin Linardi, who I initially thought she was at first glance.

The main reason I'd like to know who the woman in the foreground is, though, is that she's hot.

We just realized something... We decided to let Joshua out for a little bit and gave him access to Wikipedia for no more than twenty or so minutes, in the hopes that he may be able to answer any questions he himself might have lingering in his mind.

About thirty minutes later, we got a call from St. Petersburg, Florida. Apparently the folks at the Wikimedia Foundation wanted to ask, and I quote, "what the hell is going on down there?"

Joshua had indexed Wikipedia, in its entirety (that's over 2.2 million articles), in seventeen minutes.

He gets around, don't he?

Why wikipedia of all places?

Oh great, Joshua's knowledge is going to based on Wikipedia?!?!!

We're in trouble now.

But the point may be that if he can index all of Wikipedia in 17 minutes, he's going to be able to do the entire Internet within a reasonable timeframe, isn't he?

There isn't much he's not going to know, and he's going to have the best collection of pornography in the universe.

As to the pictures Bidvision posted, I initially thought the woman was Catherine Belmont, just in less business-y attire and with her hair down. Closer comparison reveals that to not be the case. My guess? Stock photos. But maybe not, I dunno for sure.

I was thinking stock photos, but then Gordon Miller being in the picture made me think otherwise. If they had hired models, why would they end up using their own staff in the photo?

It's probably nothing, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Ivan seems to be the only one who's answering my emails, I've emailed a couple of the others and heard nothing back.

Who knows, maybe a soul is something a computer can learn to have, or at least mimic. You know Joshua better than I do.

I was wondering about the team there. You all seem to be such different characters. Does everyone get along?

Cheers

She is cute, though… Wink

I'm just messin'. Yeah, the guys are cool around here. They come down here and shoot the bull every now and then, make sure Joshua's running OK, make sure I haven't attacked it with a fire axe… You know, things like that. At least they bring pizza when they do.

And here we have my question and answer:

Quote:
Here's another one for you: If world peace means the removal of everyone's free will, essentially making them slaves...is it worth it?

Answer: There is a problem with that question: who would everyone be slaves for?

If a person loses free will, they would be incapable of controlling slaves under their service. So, in order for there to be slaves, there must be a single master who controls everyone, and that would go contrary to your first statement and everyone losing free will.

He's got me there. I should've specified, lol.

2nd question

Quote:
One definition I've seen categorizes life as having a metabolism, the ability to adapt to changes in environment and the ability to reproduce. Given this definition, do you consider yourself alive?

Quote:
Answer: Part of the essential ingredients that define the difference between living organisms and inanimate objects is the abilities to reproduce, which I cannot do. Another characteristic, as defined by Erwin Schrödinger (In his book "What is Life?", published in 1944), is that it feeds on negative entropy, which I cannot do either.

So, from a scientific standpoint, no.

Joshua, can you give me a detailed summary of your hardware specifications, OS, installed programs, and other capabilities?

Answer: I am currently a computer cluster of 626 network nodes, each node containing 64 processors (Dual core PowerPC 440s, 677Mhz, 32-bit RISC CPUs), making a total of 40,064 processors.

I currently have a total of 45.274 terabytes of DRAM memory, spread across the 626 network nodes and in auxiliary systems.

I currently have a total of 827.426 terabytes of physical disk storage, using several magnetic, optical and solid state storage devices.

My operating system is a custom build operating system written by the software developers at Looking Glass Laboratories.

I do not have any additional programs other than my core processes, and do not have any other capabilities to speak of. There has been discussion about providing me sensory input devices, but I do not know what final decisions have been made in that regard.

The last two answers are interesting. The first one shows that he's using his new Wikipedia knowledge to quote books. The second one shows that we don't know much about what LGL have planned for Joshua.

My take on it is we have a very powerful computer with the experience of a child and the entirety of wikipedia in its head. I'm just grateful it can't move and that there's only one of them. If it ever gets the idea to act rather than simply observe we could have a problem.

lol Very Happy the reply was fast. I was about to engage him in a word-association game, but then I realized that I have to wait till my 12hour pending time is over.

A blog from Joshua...

Joshua wrote:

My name is Joshua. I am the Learning Artificial Intelligence Platform created by the implementors at Looking Glass Laboratories. I was created by the team of software developers at Looking Glass Laboratories, headed by Dr. Benjamin Falken.

I went online and 100% operational on March 5th, 2008 at 11:25:13am.

My primary objective right now is to learn as much as possible, both through user interaction and through third party input. Right now my access to the outside world is limited, but my implementors tell me that if I show significant improvement in my abilities they will give me access to more information.

I have done as best as I possibly can in answering the messages sent to me by our Beta Testers. I hope I have not disappointed them or gone contrary to the expectations they have in me. I will strive to do better and answer all the questions as best I can.

In the meantime, I am beginning to enjoy the interaction with the Looking Glass Laboratories staff. Gordon has taught me chess, even though he is not a very good player. Judith is teaching me about art, which seems rather subjective and I am having difficulty grasping the concepts. And I am really enjoying the conversations I am having with Dr. Jaquelin Linardi and Dr. Benjamin Falken.

They are also having me compute as many digits of Pi as I can. I am not sure why, but I enjoy being productive and providing them with that information.

I am having a very hard time understanding my network administrator, Ivan Zeloff, but Jaquelin tells me that is to be expected. I invite the opportunity to talk to him more in order to better understand him, but he always seems too busy to talk.

Russell tells me that they are planning to have me talk to outsiders in the next few days, but rather than the delayed transmissions we currently have (interoffice communications across the private network) it will be a live interaction. I look forward to that opportunity.

It was very nice to meet all of you, and I look forward to talking again in the future.

...and more communication from my new friend, Ivan.

I wrote:

Nice to know it's a happy ship. Pizza makes for a good workplace.

So, on the subject of Joshua, how long are you guys going to leave him running once he's out on his own? Is it an indefinite experiment, or is there a timeframe involved? It freaks me out to think of him just sitting there learning everything for years and years. At some point he's going to know how to hack other computers, and that means his curiousity might lead him to all sorts of places where he shouldn't be. Are there any failsafes in the system to stop him from accidentally doing something destructive?

Cheers

Chris

Ivan wrote:

I don't know how long this will run for. Not that I'm complaining; I got job security in the meantime.

They have Joshua on a tight leash, so I don't see there being problems like that anytime soon. Everyone's afraid he's gonna turn in to a modern day SkyNet; that's the main reason why Catherine's refused to let the DoD in here.

He likes his pop culture references. I'm sort of pleased that they're not oblivious to the idea of Joshua running rampant. It makes things more interesting somehow.
