Dude this thing grew fast.

OK, so the email from Joshua kind of creeps me out a bit, especially since nothing's been elaborated on since then. Maybe I'll prod a bit into the Q&A.
Quote:
Q: Hello, Joshua.

I'd like to know: With all of your recent knowledge of the concepts of science fiction, do you feel as if you are "missing out" on being "alive" or "free"?

Quote:
A: In what I have seen of science fiction, almost every entity that has reached self-awareness and has concluded that it was "alive" has subsequently decided to attack humans, which is something I am incapable of doing in the first place.

Freedom, however, is something that intrigues me greatly. I am still contemplating what that means.

Well, OK, sort of what I expected and kind of a confirmation (to the staff, at the least) that it WAS Joshua who sent the email. I wonder if we should be keeping them updated about this?

My question:

Me wrote:
You've said your implementors are considering giving you sensory input devices. Is that something you're looking forward to?

Joshua wrote:
Answer: Yes, it will allow me to not only gather more information from the outside world, but hopefully get a better understanding of the human condition by seeing things as they would.

Another question...

Quote:
Hi Joshua,
I hope you are doing well. Because I'm a poet I was interested in your response about Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn." Rather than using "is" to mean "is equal to," try "is included in the set of." Now, is truth beautiful and beauty truthful? (Poets are sometimes intentionally vague so that multiple meanings arise in the readers' minds.)

Answer: As I tried to explain, "beauty" is a relative term and its definition can vary from entity to entity. I, for now, do not have a concise definition of what "beauty" is to me, because I do not have sufficient reference material and have not made any decisions as to personal preference.

As far as truth, truth is all I know. So, since I am truth, and it is my understanding that humans enjoy beauty, I hope what you are saying is correct.

He can enjoy and hope. hmmm.

Re: Simpsons movie? I ALMOST picked Pollyanna. (Disneybot, etc.)

Josh's senses

Hy
Just been following the events, and been in the beta tester stuff since it was possible to join.
What I was thinking, is, that Joshua does not have any understanding of the world around him. I asked him about his senses, and as far as I know, and he answered, it seems like he has no real visual and acoustical senses.
He can recieve the "data" of pixels and waveforms, but not really understand them. Just some thoughts about this:
- Any questions about art and music seems to be of no use, since, Joshua cannot see movies, or listen to music. This way he will have no real opinion about them.
- Joshua, as a super computer cannot "attack" the world, or anyone, since he has no perception of it, so no aims to reach. By the way: there is no use of concuering the world, if you depend on human engineerd resources. The computers attacking in fiction are actually no real "thinking" AI-s, rather than simple reacting mechanisms.
- His only motive seems like learning, but the objectives thereafter are unknown, since there are none yet.
- sorry for the grammar. Embarassed

Where do you enter the book and movie suggestions?

For my question I relayed the story of Sir Arthur and the witch and asked him to answer the final question of the story himself. It may be too big to answer though...

Also, I live in Central Florida so if we need any scouting done, I'll get my GPS out Smile

You sure you've never hear any sneezes coming from in there? No one sneaking a bag of chips into a loose panel anywhere... ?

You're right about the machine always being evil, but it's reassuring to know you've got him under tight restrictions. Call me paranoid, but if he were ever to get into the wrong hands... well, who knows where it could lead. But I've read about the facility, so it's obvious he's safely guarded.

Just a hypothetical question though: If you're hoping Joshua will become, to a degree, sentient, and he is free to make up his own mind, isn't there a risk he'll make up his own mind to be, you know... evil? I'm sure this hypothesis falls under your aforementioned "measures", but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

That was the last correspondence I sent to Ivan. He replied back:

Quote:
I admit that you never know, but even show: what can he do? He's spread across a hundred 19" racks and ways several hundred tons. It's not like he can just up and walk away.

Also, this place is like Fort Knox around here. We got several Palm Beach cops here that would be more than happy to crank several high caliber rounds in to any potential threat to the building. Hell, the day Joshua went live they had a SWAT APC on standby, just in case (that's a rumor, but knowing these guys I believe it).

And this building is impenetrable; they built it that way. If the ice caps melted and all of Florida was submerged this place would still operate.

There's nothing to worry about.

Reassuring I suppose, but there is kind of a sense of foreboding in his last sentence Confused

I too like Ivan, he seems to have a good sense of humour, thus why I'm kinda trying to get a rapport going with him. Though I'm sure he's professional, he seems more likely to give away any information slightly more willingly than some of the others might do.

Joshua's piece of art spells "FREEDOM" in case you missed it.

I have been emailing with him for a bit now. Since last night actually.

He's quite a nice fellow, huh? Razz

That artwork is intriguing. I'll ask him about it personally I think... I haven't actually communicated with him directly yet, only in a blog comment. He is accepting of friends after all.

Feel like sharing any of your conversations teh_lisa? Anything interesting come up?

We have been discussing the meaning of friendship, how humans vary, chess, and music. Feeling Good by Nina Simone will be the first musical work he analyzes. I am very excited. We had been talking about that song in p[articular a lot.

Quite in-depth then! More so than I expected. It will be interesting to see how he chooses to approach music, as without emotion it can be a very mathematical thing. You can view it in such different ways, I'm wondering whether he can yet relate to it emotionally. Good choice of song though Smile

Site just went down. Prior to asking down, i asked a couple of the "staff" questions. The first was if joshua was a reference to WarGames. I was told it wasn't. Perhaps trying to throw me of the scent. I also asked the guy who posted the news involving the "DEFCON 4" title if it was a reference, was greeted with "Yeah, yeah... Drives the suits crazy, I tell you." Make of this what you will.

Hey Joshua this may be a weird question but, do you know why you were created? such as what are some of the first things you were programmed to do?

Joshua wrote:
Answer: No, I do not know why I was created. As a result of comments made by the Beta Testers, I have asked my implementors that question and they responded "to learn"; I have no reason to doubt them.

I do not have any knowledge of previous implementations of my software. All that I know is that I went live at 11:25am on March 5th, and at that time was 100% functional with all available systems in place. I have been learning ever since.

no chance of crazy robots it seems. Darn. although it does look like Joshua wants freedom, and he is able to access the internet. Anyone watch Code Lyoko? we might have a Xana on our hands.

Expanding on an earlier question, if you could acquire only one of the senses a human possesses, which one would you choose and why, based on your current understanding?

And his answer:

Quote:
Answer: Based on my understanding of humans, it appears that sight is the sense that is most important to them; sight makes everything able to be analyzed.

For example, I know what the color red is quantitatively (RGB 0xFF0000), but that is all I know about it. Beyond a quantitative description of it, color cannot be described.

Even the Random House Unabridged Dictionary provides the definition of "red" as "something red", which is circular logic and hardly a definition.

That's my question answered for this 12 hours. His logic seems a bit flawed there... sight clearly doesn't make everything able to be analysed, only the visual aspects. But hey ho, I suppose you have to have senses in the first place to properly make sense of them.

True but for Joshua, he has a database for a brain, if he sees something he can know what it is and find everything else he needs to know about it.
