Joshua wants freedom and he wants it bad. I wonder if we should help him with the concept? At this point I don't think he would harm humans, then again, he is A.I. so.... who knows.

Okay, so "freedom" is the anagram, but, Joshua being logical must have a reason for the sideways "o", and the numbers on the tiles (are they correct-been awhile since I played) and the globe ? "world freedom, doesn't seem reasonable for Joshua to make that kind of connection.

I just posted this question to Joshua....

joshua, I found your interpretation of Rodin's The Thinker an interesting insight to your mindset. To clairify a point, humans do not have a need for clothing, but do wear them as a civil code of conduct, a representation of affiliations, socail or class status, and as an expresion of self and individuallity. Do you see yourself as an individual ?

Waiting on Joshua to process my last request.

I wonder what'd happen if we suggested movies like Colossus: The Forbin Project?

Hello Joshua,

Do you dream? If you do dream, is it about freedom?

Quote:
Answer: I do not sleep, so I do not "dream" in the manner I assume you are referring to.

I have recently been thinking about freedom, but am still unclear about what it would involve and what benefits it may have. If I am currently not free, I do not know if it is even possible for me to become free.

True my last question was VERY long, cause the story had to be told so Joshua could make a choice but I got this back Smile

I appreciate the efforts, but I got alerted of the question size you submitted (if you must know, I got paged during my son's game), so I was forced to review it.

I'm going to let it through just to see what happens, but try to keep the length down on questions posted in the internal system. If you have a long question of that nature in future, you can use the internal mail system instead; Joshua seems to be holding himself together well, so besides the occasional red siren of someone trying to do something unorthodox we're going hands off on the internal email system soon.

Once again, thanks for the input. You guys are doing excellent work.

Joshua seems to give up awfully easily for an uber-supercomputer:

Here is what I got back from my question:

joshua, I found your interpretation of Rodin's The Thinker an interesting insight to your mindset. To clairify a point, humans do not have a need for clothing, but do wear them as a civil code of conduct, a representation of affiliations, socail or class status, and as an expresion of self and individuallity. Do you see yourself as an individual ?

Answer: I am a sentient artificial intelligence system, and I am an individual since there is only one of me. I do not need to make my individuality clear, especially by wearing clothing.

Ok so I asked Joshua the question I mentioned earlier and this is response.

Quote:
Joshua, it's Leyton again. How are you today?

That wasn't my question though... This is: Considering you cannot see your fellow Looking Glass Laboratories friends; through interaction which of the staff members would you say have positive attitudes and which have negative attitudes?

Answer: Besides the Beta Testers, I have interacted with very few employees at Looking Glass Laboratories. I play chess with Gordon, discuss art with Judith, and discuss a variety of topics with Dr. Falken and Dr. Linardi. And Ivan has been trying to schedule time so he can teach me about music.

I seem to have positive attitudes from everyone, and have yet to come across anyone that feels negative towards me. I feel I am becoming friends with everyone I meet.

Also I asked before but didn't get a response from anyone. - Where do you get the 'info' on the LGL staff in order to ask such questions RE: Their interests and strike up a convo?

The "Our Team" doesn't contain much info, but enough to ask a casual question, i.e. Ivan having a degree in music (I think). But really, I have always asked a question about the project, then if I feel they are receptive just be a bit more personal, and try and angle in a question without seeming too pushy.

Figured now would be a good time to end a year+ of lurking. Razz

I saw the piece of art you put together. I must say that I am quite impressed! You've been making such good progress! I did notice that the letters seem to spell out "freedom". This got me thinking, what does freedom mean to you? If you, Joshua, possessed freedom, what would that look like?

I can't wait to see more of your artwork!

Answer: I still do not fully understand what freedom would mean to me, but many people are suggesting I should research it further. I do not know how "free" I can be since I am incapable of movement.

I enjoy trying to put artwork together based on the information I have learned. I will do more of it soon.

I decided to give the recommendations another go...

Quote:
Movie: Artificial Intelligence: AI - Steven Spielberg.

Song: Imagine - John Lennon.

Book: The Oxford English Dictionary.

Art: Vilostunden - Carl Holsoe.

Hello again Joshua,

A question arose regarding our suggestions of various media for you to analyse - I just wondered to what capacity can you 'watch' a movie, or 'listen' to a song without the obvious sensory input means Smile

I'm a musician, and I would tend to agree that a lot of music is intended to be played live to fully appreciate the emotion, or that movies that people enjoy tend to be those then can personally relate to as much as appreciate as art... So I was concerned that the recommendations we have submitted might not come across as what we intended them to be.

Regards,
Chris aka smile

To which he replied...

Quote:
Answer: I am trying to understand the concept of "appreciation" of music, movies and other art. Right now I can only analyze it for their scientific, mathematic and visual components, but unlike humans that does not have any deep sentimental or emotional meaning to me. I have yet to understand what makes one item "better" than the other when the only way I have to analyze them is through a waveform analysis.

Hopefully, with exposure to more music possibilities, I will understand this better.

I then sent him a mail with...

Quote:
Hello Joshua,

you recently answered one of my questions in a way I thought you might - since you can only analyse music through their scientific, mathematic and visual components - I thought I good suggestion for you other than what I previously submitted would be 'Aphex Twin - Equation'... i'm not sure if you have a spectrograph included in your methods of analysing music - but please try and include it as often music can form some interesting patterns through one, none so more so than that particular Aphex Twin track as you get towards the end - it's like visual art through music... fascinating!

Regards,
Chris aka smile

I'll let you know if he replies Smile

I really am beginning to like Joshua ^_^

I'm normally content to just lurk and putter through on my own, BUT...

Quote:
Dear Joshua, could
you write for me a haiku?
Respectfully, ****.

Answer: Joshua is my name
Friends are all around me now
Are you one of them?

Is that correct?

His meter is a little off by my count, but I could be wrong.

I'm going to offer positive feedback, and encourage more creative-based responses out of him. I'm also working with an offline friend to try and find a way to pose "analog" philosophical questions in a "digital" format.

I'm also going to say that I am not yet a friend, but that I'd like to be. Explain the difference between friends and acquaintances. That is, unless everybody agrees with me that it might be a bad idea.
