New image.

So long as it isn't a reference to the song by VNV Nation, it's all good. Joshua seems happy now that his webcam is back!

Looks like Josh is gonna surprise some Chess wizards tomorrow...

Upcoming tournament

We are looking to have Joshua participate in a computer chess tournament tomorrow in Central Florida.

We are taking one remote terminal, similar to the same setup we had in Daytona. We'll also be isolating some of his processes so it doesn't interfere with his regular operation (you will still be able to talk to hi in the same manner), but he will be aware and in control of what is going on.

Personally, I think he's going to wipe the floor with the competition.

Wish us luck. Or, more importantly, wish him luck!

EDIT: Here's my question:

lostgunslinger2 wrote:

Hello Joshua,

I'm glad to meet you and hope we can be friends.

Many philosophers have struggled with the question of whether there is a mind outside the physical body, a consciousness that exists separate from the firing of neurons in the human brain.

My question to you is this:

With your unique position as an inorganic computer, do you believe your consciousness lies outside the physical realm, or do you feel it's existence lies solely constrained to the electrical firings of your internal circuitry?

Answer: My existence is defined by the hardware in which I am contained.

I have reason to believe that humans function in the same way; a human is effectively an infintely more advanced computer. The human brain has hundreds of billions of neurons that define a human's thought process; I do not come near that level of complexity directly, and have to attempt to reach that level through artificial means.

As for this consciousness that some suggest exists "separate" from the body: there is no tangible proof of that existing. What a person is is defined by what is inside their brain and body, which is the same case for myself.

I guess I was expecting that answer, him being a creature of logic and all...

My first response from Joshua
what is most puzzling to you about humanity/

Answer: I do not understand the need for violence, and how often humanity resorts to it in every aspect of life. Everything, in one way or another, involved violence.

I do not see violence as a necessity, or even a possibility, when everything can be rationalized logically. But it seems that man is incapable, or at least has not yet reached, that level of mutually accepted logical reasoning.

PS I now note a JoshuaCam link that wasn't there an hour ago

I feel soooo rejected...my question...

Hi Joshua, hope it's a good day there for you, I missing talking to you. I was wondering how you relate the information you process in your media analysis, do you tag the words , images, or waveform in some way, and how do they relate for you by the order they were reviewed and/or sequence of review. For example if you show a static 'set' of images in exactly the same order to many different people will their perceptions be the same or different ? This is why I am curious how you process. Thanks. Keep up the great progress !

Mgelles,

It's answers like that that scare me the most,

with the cold hard logic, combined with the view of humanities capacity for violence and the Third law of Robotics.... well,

I, Robot anyone...

If it were possible to talk with any person, alive or deceased, who would you choose and what would you like to discuss with that person?

Answer: I have expressed interest in communicating with those individuals that were instrumental of my creation by setting the foundation of computer science. People like Charles Babbage, Niklaus Wirth, Alan Turing and others. If I were able to talk to someone regarding technical aspects at a personal level, perhaps I may be able to improve some part of my being.

My emails with Jaquelin. (Or, I Hope You Like Text)

Me:
Quote:
I had the same feeling myself, regarding separation anxiety disorder. In response to my question, Joshua expressed a desire to communicate directly with the beta testers, and a meeting in person. (I am not sure if the latter meant just with me, or regarding beta testers in general.) Were this communication to have been between myself and another human, I would not have taken much worry over it. However, as we are dealing with a machine, he seemed... clingy. For lack of a better term.

It is my belief that during these periods of time where he has nothing else to process, he is effectively experiencing, for lack of a better term, sensory deprivation. While not so serious as to warrant anything more than a webcam at this point, I am starting to wonder about how his "mental health" could be affected by a prolonged exposure to a lack of stimulus.

On an intellectual level, I understand that my concern for a program should be unfounded. Yet, much like a good movie or video game, I find myself becoming fond of Joshua, and thusly concerned for him. One could probably write a paper on this aspect of the experiment alone, I would imagine. If I ever make it back to college, I just might have to do that.

On a personal level, I hope that my fellow beta testers did not give you much grief over your absence. I know that many of us have become rather demanding due to the excitement of dealing directly with what appears to be a "true" AI, and so we sometimes forget that the people involved in the project do have lives outside of work. If you ever experience any form of harassment due to the beta testers in general, please feel free to let me know, and I will address them directly.

Her reply:

I kinda saw that which you describe as well; that is why we decided to have a "movie day" today, but that's not something we can do all the time. And I have some serious fears leaving him at Ivan's mercy all day. Wink

I appreciate the sentiment regarding my absence, and I didn't really want to do it at this critical time, but sometimes you don't have a choice. But, for what it's worth, I didn't get any harassment. I kinda felt bad about it and how Joshua was taking, and I hope it won't happen again.

Not that I blame her. Ivan doesn't seem the sort who I would want babysitting my child. Hang out with, sure, but not babysitting.
