Just a quick question. Does the header photo on the freewebs page possibly indicate the city he is in? I would think a bridge and skyline like that would be easily identifiable. (Forgive me if it is since I have no clue where it would be.)

The bridge is the Sydney Harbor Bridge , Australia.

I think that may be stock footage or something, because the main page's background ( http://www.freewebs.com/justinbaley/NWM%20Background.JPG ) doesn't look like Sydney and is a completely different bridge.
Might be stock footage or a page template that means nothing.
Are there palm trees in Sydney? Isn't Australia one giant desert or something?

dammit!! I knew that it was gonna have to be a drop... and the library no doubt...(that whole let's go drop the "plant" in the library thing sure is popular these days)
Well, as a librarian, I wish they'd show up in my library--at least it would be more interesting than freaked out students!

Well, looking in Google books tells me that Perthsire in History is likely the only book with a chapter entitled curse of the Breadalbanes. Worldcat tells me that the only libraries in California (based on the math test book) are:
1. California State University, Fresno [also has 6 Steiger books, ]
2. Stanford University Libraries [has 6 Steigers, including Revelation]
3. UCLA Library [12 by Steiger]
4. University of California, Santa Barbara [has 50 by Steiger, has Revelation]
Steiger's website indicates that he was born in Iowa but, that I noticed, not where he lives now. He did, however, write a book with a particular (to us) title: Other worlds, other universes : playing the reality game -- it seems that all 5 libraries on the list have this book. But if this were a clue, why not show a picture of that book instead of the one that IS shown Revelation: The Divine Fire, an Investigation of Men and Women Who Claim to be in Spiritual Communication with a Higher Intelligence
So after all of this nattering on I have decided maybe UCSB is a good location to check, if no one on board is in SB I do have a friend who is a librarian there so I can ask her to check it out. She'd definitely NOT be a PM... or I am so new at this I am grasping at straws?

Considering these are reasonably public libraries, I'm gonna guess there has to be a picture of the library foyers *somewhere* on the 'net.

OK...
So, the title of the book (I think, I can't find an edition with the red cover) is:
How to pass the California entry level mathematics test | Viggo P Hansen; Evelyn D Bell; Robert J Wisner | 1987
the California ELM is a test administered to students in the Cal State system, not the University of California system... so that makes me think my guess on UCSB was wrong... ack.
Speaking of libraries, it's time to leave mine and go home. Maybe I will have some kind of brainstorm while I am stuck in traffic.

Actually, I just thought of something... what if it's NOT a university? Can it be a high school library?
The aisles seem to worn and unkempt to be either a college library (especially to the likes of Stanford and UCLA) or a public library. And the first exterior shot, assuming it's where we're supposed to go, doesn't look like anything as major as a university.
*EDIT*
According to Worldcat, the math book appears in twelve locations, including several public libraries, a Christian college, and some state universities.

Check the Chaotic Fiction "Gardner Project" thread: we got some people in the San Francisco area.
But we still don't have a clue in hell where we have to go. We don't even know for 100% sure if this is California yet.
