 Massively Multiplayer Science
and other "serious" topics.

I don't know if anyone else has seen anything about the X2 Club, McGonigal's project in Massively Multiplayer Science. This I dig. What kind of potential do we have here? What kind of "serious" work can we do?

I just took a look at the thread and article re: the Department of Defense hiring a firm to do an ARG-ish training simulation to respond to the effects of a devastating tsunami. Neat...and now with World Without Oil winning laurels at SXSW, what's next?

I'm personally interested in the concept of using ARG for political organizing...

To carry on from the last post in press (for reference). I agree that the output of the X2 club could be peer-reviewed, but imagine if in the end a paper was produced. Though many people could be involved in the process of the initial research, fewer and fewer are involved as you get to the stage of writing and editing and then where's the fun? It only remains for the few individuals still involved. Although to counter my own argument there's wikipedia

I think what I'd like to see is some way that the process has scientific credibility without the peer-review process*, I'm just not able to imagine a way to do it with fun involved.

So Wittgenstein, where's the fun in politics then? Wink

*Which is a system that allows pusillanimous socially decrepit academics to use up as many snide remarks as their withered brains can come up with some examples as this is a personal bugbear and I find I've mounted a soap-box:
• The shear ignorance of work that has been done earlier is frightening!
• I felt like I was teaching my grandmother to suck eggs. Accept with minor revision.
• The paper is full of wild speculation linked by a few random experiments.
• I nearly said reject. But then I recalled that I have a hangover and I am feeling grumpy.
Not received by me but I have had similar passive aggressive pointlessness)

Conventional mass organizing = tired.
Collective intelligence via ARGs = wired.

an information revolution, my friend. the whole problem with MSM is that it's designed to keep people isolated and frightened. i feel like the collective intelligence/ARG model is a great weapon against that. yes?

THEN politics is fun again! Very Happy

Is anyone here actually participating in the X2 club or know anyone is? I thought it sounded intriguing and emailed the contact they have under "participation inquiries", but never heard back...
