Giving something back
(but only if you want to)

    Bandwidth/Hosting: $312 / year
    Texts / Phone calls to/from Passengers: $300/month
Time and Effort: Loss of sleep / interaction with loved ones

    Silver Ladder experience: Priceless.

Many of the Passengers would agree that art (whatever it's form) should be created when the urge strikes, not out of obligation. Most famous works of art were not commissioned, Leonardo didn't wait for a checks to clear before painting the Mona Lisa. Michelangelo didn't chisel David out of a hunk of marble to pay his landlord. Artists don't create art for money, they create because they must. It is integral to their being. A street musician doesn't play outdoors for the money, but because they are passionate about playing and need a creative outlet and a place to perform. If a passer-by happens to drop a few bucks in their hat because they appreciated the music, because it evoked a reaction in their otherwise cold and dismal lives and made them feel again, that's just an added bonus. Giving money to the artist It isn't an act of charity, it's an exchange, an act of appreciation.

That being said, let's take a look back at Silver Ladder. Unlike the majority of ARG's, it was not part of a tie-in. Silver Ladder was not a cross-promotional event for a movie about a guy in a bat suit fighting clowns. Silver Ladder was not about a giant sea creature invasion. Silver Ladder didn't ask you to buy anything. Silver Ladder was not created with financial gain in mind. Silver Ladder introduced us to new forms of art, music, ideas, and most importantly, to each other. Silver Ladder probably impacted your life, that's why you're here now. You came for the puzzles, you stayed for the ideas, interaction, the Art, Love, Information, and Chaos.

Now that the ARG potion of Silver Ladder has concluded, groups of people are planning on their own extensions of the game in hopes of continuing what Shane Watson started. With this undertaking, people are beginning to realize how much time and effort went into the creation of the original, and how much of a monumental task Silver Ladder was when they found out who was behind it all. They're starting to realize how much time, effort, money, and passion went into the creation of the original.

Recently, Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead gave us their art, offering it up to the public for whatever individuals thought it was worth. Why should Silver Ladder be any different? Did you enjoy the Silver Ladder experience? Do you think it's worth kicking a few bucks toward the artist? The cost of hosting, paying for the hundreds of text messages received, the future costs of Silver Ladder forums where we can collaborate on projects and share ideas. Keep in mind, this is not a subscription. You will not receive a signed copy of Silver Ladder. This is not tax deductible. There will be no special treatment. This is voluntary. Nobody will know who (if anyone) contributes. There is no leader board. Nobody is expecting you to donate. Nobody will think less of you if you don't. So if you want to, (and are able) fire some PayPal cash off to Shane's email address.

What's the worst that can happen?

Michael, this is lovely.

I want to be a part of this for Shane (even though I feel there's no price I could possibly name that would feel like enough).

.. I wish I could say more, but I feel my words will only pale next to yours.

This is wonderful. The think I loved about Silver Ladder was the community and the love.

While you're at it, donate something to me for hosting sl-team. Wink

All kidding aside, I beg you to do this. We built up an unparalleled and awesome community, had a great time, and many things were accomplished. Give some thanks to Shane!

Beautiful. I love the idea.

And while wonderful, I'd like to say it is a mere drop in the bucket of the true depth of my appreciation for all he gave us, and for creating something that brought me to all of you.

Thank you.

You can use http://sl-team.org/donate.html to donate. Just type in the amount and you'll be off!

Maybe he will use the donations to buy all the passengers a holiday ham as part of the new ham ARG. Smile

I sent money using paypal. How do I know if and when he gets it? Thank you for the idea. I'd rather use this money to help someone like this than to use it to pay for a movie and put money in the pockets of someone like Time-Warner or whoever.

The only confirmation you'd get would be seeing the receipt in your PayPal account payment history where you transferred funds to his.

Thanks for supporting the arts Smile
