We need your help! (draft)
International Requests for help, grassroots advertising

Here's the idea.

1) Help me write/rewrite the below segment to give us a concise, catch your attention, explain what's going on summary
2) Translate the final version into as many languages as possible
3) When translating, only include the link to the community for the language which was translated.
4) Splash it around on blogs, forums, or other websites and communities and watch the help flow in!

A) How is the length? Too long? Too Short? Just right?
B) Does it summarize the game?
C) Does it summarize the ARG?
D) Does it "get you" and make you feel like its truly an international event that needs your help
E) Did I hit enough of the ingame sites with direct links, or explanations (e.g. should it actually discuss "the game is playing out on videos, blogs, and forums in each of these languages"
F) No link back to Unfiction on purpose, to try and drive initial community growth to the ingame forums.. they will find us from there and the wiki

I borrowed several statements from the Beginners guide and wiki, so thanks in advance.

We need your help!

I'm part of an international community currently participating in an ARG (Alternate Reality Game) called "Find the Lost Ring". Part story telling, part puzzle solving, an ARG is a fictional experience that is interwoven with the real world. This is a global event leading up to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

There's a history to the Olympics that's been hidden for centuries, even millennia - a set of events dating back to ancient Greece that were erased and long forgotten. And today, six amnesiatic strangers woke up in various places around the world wearing athletic garments, none speaking a common language and tattooed with the phrase "Trovu la ringon perditan" - "Find the lost ring". Now they're seeking our help to find out who they are, where they're from, what their purpose is, and just what the heck is going on around here.

Expect to dig into legends, Greek mythology, ancient Greek lore and philosophy while discovering knowledge that has been lost to our modern civilization for over a thousand years.

Join with others around the world, communicating across language barriers in an attempt to help our six amnesiacs 'Save the World'.

Find the Lost Ring has been designed from the beginning to be an international event! Thoughout the games, we are presented with clues and stories in English, French, German, Portugese, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Esperanto. Communities are growing based around these same languages, yet its essential that we are all able to communicate with each other! Some of our puzzles even involve visiting foreign countries and cities to retrieve information.

Whether you want to actively participate in puzzle solving, translation, or just following along with the story, we're trying to grow Find the Lost Ring into the greatest ARG the world has ever seen.

For more information, you can watch the trailer, in your language, at www.thelostring.com, or join the community and learn more about the game at http://forums.findthelostring.com/community/ariadne.  {http://forums.findthelostring.com/community/lucie  ||  http://forums.findthelostring.com/community/meihui  ||  http://forums.findthelostring.com/community/meihui  ||  http://forums.findthelostring.com/community/markus  ||

We're compiling as much information as possible at our Wiki (http://olympics.wikibruce.com). Although predominantly English, translations of many our discoveries are available, as well as translations through online software.

My two cents

For me it would be too long to read (to be honest I have even now not read everything Smile). Also it sounds like an advertisment, so that I fear many people will already stop at the first sentences.

I think we do not need to explain too much. Do you remember when you stumbled over your first ARG. It was different, mysterious and interesting.

This is what I have written in a Belgium forum (it needs of course some polishing)

Quote:

Hi everybody,

we are urgently searching somebody in Brussels who has time to look up something in a restaurant in Brussel. This is part of a really big, international and highly interesting ARG (alternate reality game)- some kind of game played in internet and real places in the world (like Brussel).
Just have a look here as a teaser:

If you are interested, just answer here or post in this forum:

Well it kinda is an advertisement, just one by the players instead of the designers.

I like the stumble upon idea, but if you're posting to a forum/community that you aren't already known in, you think people would follow such a really short one? Maybe their interest is piqued enough you're right, they would..

I guess it depends on the receiver.

One more general comment:
ARGs useally do not advertise like other games and the "this is not a game" design is very important. So even my post was not following those rules.

Here a quote from wikipedia:

- Rather than openly promoting the game and trying to attract participation by "pushing" it toward potential players, the designers attempted to "pull" players to the story

I guess that this is not necessarily true for FTLR, but I still like the idea of "pulling" people

just for grins, here's a response I got from someone I was trying to pull in this week: "Tell your mate if they want my help to tell me what eggsackgetdeli they want me to do cos that website was a load of drivelous crap that made as much sense as a (and here she typed something inappropriate)"

I do agree with the idea of blogging and posting about it outside of the game and I think pulling people in is going to be very important, so I keep trying.

Re: We need your help! (draft)
International Requests for help, grassroots advertising

A) How is the length? Too long? Too Short? Just right?
I agree with AUZ505, I think it is too long.

B) Does it summarize the game?
I think that it goes into too much detail.

C) Does it summarize the ARG?
ARGing can be a difficult concept to convey.

D) Does it "get you" and make you feel like its truly an international event that needs your help
No.

E) Did I hit enough of the ingame sites with direct links, or explanations (e.g. should it actually discuss "the game is playing out on videos, blogs, and forums in each of these languages"
I think it might be best to mention videos, podcasts and blogs, but keep direct links to a minimum.

F) No link back to Unfiction on purpose, to try and drive initial community growth to the ingame forums.. they will find us from there and the wiki
I think that is a good idea. The ingame forums should be less overwhelming than unfiction, especially for non-english speakers.

other comments
It doesn't emphasize that this experience is free.
I think that most of your post would be better as follow-up information (if anyone on the forum in question expresses an interest).

So should I just bail on the idea then?

can't hurt
can't hurt

I don't think you need to bail. If it attracts anyone, it helps.

IMHO, this is like any other aspect of an ARG-- trying as many tacks as possible is the best path to success.

So let's try versions that are shorter and focus more on the drama of the story too.

Maybe those with language skills could create profiles to friend with/further publicize our 6?

I really like the idea of translating an introductory message into different languages.

My personal opinion is that the most effective intro message is one that makes people think "hmm, that's intruiging, I want to find out more".
If people see the intro and post "that looks interesting, can you tell me more about it?" or "what is the lost ring anyway?" or "that seems like a really weird way to advertise the olympics". Then you can be prepared with a follow up message that is very similar to what you have already written.

Re: We need your help! (draft)

How about this? I've condensed some of Weezel's post (which I thought was great.) Would this maybe draw people into the story (without even mentioning it's an ARG)?

Quote:

We need your help!

There's a history to the Olympics that's been hidden for centuries, even millennia - a set of events dating back to ancient Greece that were erased and long forgotten. And recently, six amnesiatic strangers woke up in various places around the world, none speaking a common language and tattooed with the phrase "Trovu la ringon perditan" - "Find the lost ring". Part story telling, part puzzle solving, this global event will have you digging into legends, Greek mythology, ancient Greek lore and philosophy while discovering knowledge that has been lost to our modern civilization for over a thousand years.

Join with others around the world, communicating across language barriers in an attempt to help our six amnesiacs 'Save the World'.

For more information, you can watch the trailer, in your language, at www.thelostring.com, or join the community and learn more about the game at http://forums.findthelostring.com/community/ariadne.

You can help us discover their past...You can help us determine their future.
