It seems like there is a lot of waisted numbers in the rest of the bar code color values. Could there be some way to extract more data by using other R/G/B values?

Good observation. I'm hoping for a second piece of code to emerge that would require the use of the other color values, give us something to use as a reference. Without some sort of guide, we'd be shooting in the dark mixing and matching the colors (I guess we're doing that already, though). It seems like it should be easier than this.

I'm still trying to figure out how the Capablanca emails relate. We had the chess reference, followed by the "Roses are R, Violets are B" poem. Then we discovered the bar.jpg image, now this new image. There's some huge piece of logic missing from the whole thing, and it's making us run in circles. I don't like it! ... Could this be considered sabotage? Confused

(even if you know your solution is right, I think we should use the emailed one. jmo)

I agree, we should default on the side of whatever the PM sends us. But, perhaps the "mistake" is a hint? What if the PM purposely inserted the values that way? If we match that methodology, the cipher resulting from bar.jpg would be: 94H4013d168a84j8. That seems too far-fetched, though. Something to keep in mind, I guess.

Anyone else think Alex staged his death? Perhaps to protect his family?

They recovered a body, so would be hard to stage. Unless, he has a twin brother...! Quick, does anyone watch Days of Our Lives? Wink

PS: Nice of you to visit your mom Smile now get back to work! lol

lol - My mom asked if I had been doing anything fun this week, and I thought about explaining Project Loyola to her, but she would have asked too many questions.

Me: "Yeah, I've been tracking this guy named Alex Loyola lately. Tough guy to follow! Well, the other day he took a bullet, accident or something on the highway--he's dead now. Anyway, we found this code, and we've been trying for weeks to hack into this damn site, but we can't figure it out! So Alex's wife and some monkey keep sending us hints, but we don't know what we're doing... We suspect this Sofia chick is involved in some way, but Robert says she's a bitch, so we can't talk to her right now. Bummer, right?"

Mom: "Alex? Wasn't he one of your friends?"
Me: "No, mom, he's not real."
Mom: "Did he have a nice funeral?"
Me: "Uh, sure."
Mom: "I don't want you hanging around people with guns."
Me: "I won't, mom."
Mom: "And why is a monkey sending you email?"

While we've been wrestling over this code, I've found another question. Or at least realized that there's something strange afoot at the Circle K...

In recognition of his death, the Red Loyola offices will be closed until Wednesday, March 18th.

March 18th was a Tuesday. (D'oh!)

Any significance to this one? Anyone want to mail Robert and ask him?

[EDIT] Also, rather than double-post, I'll add this here. On Stephanie's LJ, she has one friend, named Onigir. Curiously enough, he has the DVD-rip hex code on the same date that Alex had it on his own journal (2 May 2007). Alex's post pointed to Digg.com. "Dig deeper"?

Coincidence?

That was too funny....my family doesn't get it either. My husband is the worst....he says stuff like "oh, you're doing your "thing" again" I've tried explaining what ARG means....they are just like, huh? So I call it a mystery game. I did tell him that the guy that we are supposed to find, doesn't even have a picture of him posted anywhere......I didn't tell him that he's died since then. The last ARG I did, Project Ophiuchus, we had to create little pictures with riddles on them.....and hubby can only look at the screen and say "What the hell is THAT?" Why even ask me if you won't understand the explanation? lol

ok, back to the game. and that (^%$* code.

Most likely a typo. Given the typos I've seen in the Capablanca emails, Robert's replies, Stephanie's messages, and on all redloyola-affiliated sites, I would lean towards poor spell checking rather than super genius plan. Surprised

Not a coincidence. May 1st/2nd was when the HD-DVD processing key was widely distributed, starting at Digg, then spreading to blog and wiki sites everywhere. I'd say Alex's post on the HD-DVD key is merely a jab at that date's significance.

However, this Onigir friend is worth taking a glance at. I think this is a recent friend, because I didn't notice any when we first found Stephanie's site. From reading a few of Onigir's blog posts, I think he's actually one of the PM's, but I could be wrong. Let's keep an eye on him.

I read through the Project Ophiuchus thread, that one looked really fun. I hope the PM does another -- I can't believe he developed that by himself! But yeah, explaining an ARG to someone is the pits. So I just say, "I'm playing a game," and they usually leave me alone. Very Happy

Obviously, dates seem to be a problem for this group of PMs. You saw the dates on the pictures on Alex's flickr?

Pictures taken Feb 8th and 9th!
Uploaded Feb 25th.
Trip date: Feb 26th!

I don't know how much stuff we are supposed to just 'overlook'.....

Yeah... Well, this is a college project. They're experimenting, finding that niche. So everyone play nice! Smile

Keeping the impression of a logical sense of time is not as easy as it sounds.

Very true. It's like trying to remember a few dozen lies, as well as who you've lied to, what was lied about to whom, etc. Can be confusing (not to say that I partake in such a ritual.... or do I??? ...) Wink

Speaking of which, did we want to get a wiki started to keep track of things for Project Loyola? I have a hunch that once we get past the login, a flood of information will come in. I can look into setting that up, or keep posting occasional summaries, whichever seems easier to digest.

I've tried using 2H19871d101a397j140 as the password to uncamouflage the Georgia pictures from Alex's flickr. And also tried it on all of the monetizer ads. And on the bar.jpg. Nothing.

(just posting this to save others time)

No... Bang Head

I sent this email to Steph:

Stephanie,
Thanks for the code and picture. Our group had already found this code on Redloyola. We do have a slightly different answer though, probably just a transposition of numbers, so we are glad to have Alex's version. Any thoughts on what he would have used it for?

We have also received some cautious emails, claiming that "someone is watching". We hope that you have not received anything like that, but would like you to remain aware of it, for your own safety. Let us know if you see or hear anything suspicious, including those least suspected. What's the story with Robert and Sophia anyways? Perhaps just bad business between them?

We know this is a difficult time for you and Meren, and really appreciate the time and effort that this takes. We just want to find out the truth, as we are sure you want the same.
Our deepest sympathies,
BettyLou and friends.

The HD-DVD key makes sense to me, but the ciphers don't. I feel like we're missing something obvious. I'm gonna scour the websites again....

Edit: I was reading through an I Love Bees synopsis, and noticed that one of the puzzles required players to open the images in a text/hex editor to unravel a message. I tried the same on all of our images (bar.jpg, bar.png, ubuntu.png, mysteryimage.jpg, the Flickr images, and a few others), but didn't notice anything. The next time another image gets sent our way, though, keep this in mind, case any info gets hidden there.

Hello

Hello everyone, I have just finished reading through the 12 page thread, and there is quite alot of information. I was just wondering whether we should actually try and properly 'hack' the site, but that may count as cheating. But I have spotted alot of things you all have aswell, and I hope we can uncover some even more things.
