It doesn't say anything forwards. It's just what your mind wants to hear.

That's what I'm inclined to think as well, just as people saw all sorts of monsters in the smoke that didn't come to pass.

Backwards messages

Not true; "Another one bites the dust" played backwards is "decide to smoke maruijuana"

I'm replying late, but it was funny to see this example.. it was used in a book chapter discussing the "backwards messages" in music phenomenon in the 60s-80s era. Taken from the book "Big Secrets" by William Poundstone, here is the discussion on why the Queen song snippet is not a true backwards message, and any similar "backwards and forwards" message interpretation is unlikely.

'There is something that sounds like "It's fun to smoke marijuana" in the reversed music. It is repeated over and over. It might be rendered no less faithfully, however, as "sfun to scout mare wanna." This "message" is the reversal of the song title, which is repeated as a line in the song.

'"It's fun to smoke marijuana" is clearly a phoenetic reversal. The lyrics are perfectly plain played forward ("Another one bites the dust"), not so plain played backward ("sfun to scout mare wanna"). With an engineered reversal, the opposite should hold true: gibberish forward, clear as a bell backward. Some are prepared to believe that phoenetic reversals are just as intentional as engineered reversals - that the songwriter painstakingly planned the phoenetic double-entendre. In the absence of confirming evidence, that just doesn't wash. It's too easy to find coincidences. If, for instance, the letters of the alphabet are recited (Ay, Bee, Cee, etc.) and reversed, at least five sound like English language words. D reverses to "eden," F becomes "pray," S becomes "say," V becomes "even," and Z becomes "easy." "It's fun to smoke marijuana" is likewise a coincidence.'

There is one thing, though- the sound resembling the phrase "help us" is not the one that sounds like "it's still alive" backwards. it's part of the "static", just like "it's still alive" is part of the static in forward play.

Forward: "Help us"...(noice)

Backwards: (noice).."It's still alive".

Played together, each phrase is heard more clearly, and the static seems to be toned down.

So it remains as a possibility.

The portion of the audio that sounds like speech in both cases is the same. What sounds like static in one direction doesn't become a voice in the other. If you load the forward version into a sound editor like Audacity and look at the wave form, play it, then reverse it and note where you hear the voice in the reversed wave form, you'll see that it's the same place. I am still of the opinion that 'help us' is just what you want to hear, because of the circumstances of the characters and the desire to see them survive and the story continue. If it was suggested that it sounded like someone gasping out 'fail much' you would probably hear that too. Wink

Take note that the voice is far clearer when played backwards, a sure sign of backmasking. Beck's song Loser has backmasking in it, and when I reversed and cropped it I got some of the more prominent forwards voice at the end, and oddly it sounds like "I've got a good point" - but I make no assumptions that this was intentional. It's very distorted sounding and I'm sure someone else listening could hear something else from it.

Actually, my claim came from reading a post where the poster said he did just that, and played one track on top of the other? I believe he uploaded the combined version as well. I forget where that was- I'll check if it was on this thread.

Anyway, if that's incorrect, then I guess "It's still alive" is the only option possible.

I have the DVD and played the recording over and over until I was pretty sure what was being said.

To me it sounded like "They're still alive"
It's possible that voice is coming from the person who finds Rob, Beth, and the camera.

You can also clearly hear the monster being affected by the Hammer-Down. It's the only time you can hear the monster being hurt.
I don't think MGP survived, but I do think Rob and Beth did.
