could who ever has the original postcard do a wax rubbing of it? (you know tracing paper over the original and a crayon rubbed on it's side?) that would reveal the carved marks.
I was thinking the same thing--Some of them look like regular scribble marks, but some are angled in such a way as to suggest they're not quite random. They look a little too simple to be Kanji...But maybe not? Can you see anything in them, unagi?

Those logs were cut, not blasted. Look at the ends of them.

I agree. But I can't tell if I should be googling "labyrinth of logs" or "lumber yard"

On the face of it, RedRune's warning makes no sense. The postcard is about a disaster due to a failure to act in time. The warning tells Noriko to "stop now" so that a similar disaster won't happen in 2008. If RedRune really wanted Noriko (and the rest of us) to stop, why would he/she send her a postcard showing the disastrous consequences of stopping?

Totally random, utterly wild SPEC: RedRune is someone in Theo's group, who believes that Theo is wrong and is secretly trying to help us. The real message is concealed -- somehow -- in those deliberate scratches.

(Unrelated aside: Do we have any idea for whom the postcard was originally written? There's no addressee.)

What if RedRune is not a english native speaker (like perhaps many other involved people in this story) and he wanted to say "Stop it now" instead of "Stop now"?

Well, here's my attempt at a simulated crayon rubbing. it just looks like scratches to me. If they wanted to scratch words, they could have, as seen on the goggles.

Would you agree the original message is a communication between our friends who wrote the codex?

ETA: I think it's just an image from the logging industry. similar to the image here http://www.scripophily.net/tosekakaja19.html
The message on that picture could have to do with the tree image of our many worlds multiverse. A neo-pangaea event would cut it all down.

I have the post card.

Attached are are the original scans I made in tiff format.

I would be willing to do a rubbing, but I think photoshop could get you anything you need out of these. Let me know. Sorry for terse nature of this post, work is soul-crushing right now.

I have one question, and forgive me for beating this poor deceased horse but the more I think about this, the more sense it makes.

How much do we really know about Renata?

If Renata was part of the hypothetical 695 group, why haven't we heard anything about any of the others other than a passing mention from Eli regarding possible Bad Things about it?

Upon rereading the lukefj/Larissa chat log, two things stand out:

1. She would go off at night and not tell anyone where she'd been, and

2. She seemed unusually sad sometimes.

The root of the problem: how much do we really truly know about Renata?

Answer: not damn much.

So. My harebrained [SPEC], let me show you it:

Renata either came alone, or was a mole in the 695 group. Either way, she's on Theo's team. If the latter, she may have done something or had a hand in doing something Bad to the rest of the group--hence Eli's guilt about another self not being able to stop something terrible that happened with the 695 group.

She knew something about what she was doing here, whether she remembered it while she was meditating or she didn't actually have amnesia like the others, and that made her sad. She knew if Theo got his way a lot of people were going to die. Including Larissa, her friend. I think Theo was telling the truth about her not wanting Larissa involved in what they were up to and that being why she left for the U.S. Four years here, especially with the help of someone as smart as Theo has to be, is more than enough time for a non-native speaker to learn enough English to write those creepy notes on the postcard and the goggles.

Speaking of which, those were sent to Noriko from San Francisco, and we know Renata is or at least was in that area fairly recently.

Now, is she 100% on board with Theo's plans, or not? I'd have to say not. Maybe she was at some point, and maybe she's keeping up the appearance of being completely on Theo's side, but after befriending Larissa she might be having second thoughts.

tl;dr: I think Renata may not be our friend. D:

The first thing I would want to find out to help confirm or deny this: has anyone ever asked Larissa if Renata had one of those blindfolds like Ariadne woke up with, and like this one? If nobody knows for sure, could I trouble a Portuguese speaker to drop her an e-mail? ...of course she could have hidden it somewhere, I guess, but a definite yea or nay would be good to know.

Info from Noriko's comment in her forum:
- The postcard and the goggle in an envelope was sent to Miki's clinic, where she was allowed to stay
- The envelope seems to have been abandoned by a nurse
- This made her anxious about Miki's safety, but she decided to leave his clinic
- The postcard made her choose California
- For long she had been wondering whether to keep these things secrets, and decided to make it open
- Now Kai kindly has given her a prospect to stay for a while with his friend's help
- She wants to find what she can do to prevent California's landslide and Neopangaea

It all comes down to that damned Railroad Industry - cutting down all the trees to make way for a multiverso, single continent railway system.

Finally got the video up. You can view it here.

Couple things to note:

-It was windy as hell.
-I recorded this from a digital still camera in MPEG1 format. As a result Quicktime refused to demux, so I couldn't edit it. This is the raw movie.
-The spec coming from my booming godlike voice I just pulled out of my ....head. Or I think I saw it on some TV show or anime.

Please, be gentle. Smile

Awww...She's so cute! Very Happy (You guys are too. My favorite part was Ariock saying you all were scared to be out in the open.) Ranger D--I actually like your spec--pulled out of thin air after an awkward pause where it seemed like you probably had no idea what the heck to say. But who knows? It actually might be right.
