I'm fairly sure his face is like that because he didn't know the parasites were there, and died immediately when he was stabbed by it. Therefore he died without looking like he was in pain.

And there'd be no explosions becuase no one got bit by the parasites. The effects of the parasite's bite is what made Marlena explode, not just because she was attacked.
